Chapter 2

“You shouldn’t be upset. That spot isn’t for you, it’s for the school. Besides, I’m just informing you, not discussing it with you.” William Grant threw down these words and strode away.

David Bennett bit his lip tightly. He was unwilling to accept it, yet he felt an immense pressure weighing down on him, making it hard to breathe.

“David, hurry back to the classroom, the ultraviolet tide is coming!” Brian Sullivan ran over, grabbed David Bennett, and pulled him toward the classroom.

The ultraviolet tide was actually just ultraviolet rays, but ever since the void ruptured, what used to be relatively mild ultraviolet rays had turned into the ultraviolet tide. Four hours of ultraviolet tide each day had become the hardest time for ordinary people to endure.

Only by hiding indoors could one avoid the onslaught of the ultraviolet tide.

“I’m going to take a break.” After reaching the corridor outside the classroom, David Bennett said resolutely.

As he spoke, David Bennett completely ignored Brian Sullivan’s attempts to stop him and ran toward the dormitory. But halfway there, David Bennett realized that there were probably quite a few classmates hiding from the ultraviolet tide in the dormitory at this time.

He didn’t want to see the look of pity in those classmates’ eyes!

The dilapidated cave behind the school was where David Bennett usually practiced martial arts. Now, after arriving at the cave, he started punching the broken wooden stake in the center.

One punch, two punches, three punches...

David Bennett didn’t know how many punches he had thrown. His strength was being drained with every frenzied blow.

Years of hard work were no match for a single bottle of potion!

This sense of defeat brought a nameless sorrow surging up from the depths of David Bennett’s heart. But compared to this sorrow, what made David Bennett feel even worse was his powerlessness to change anything.

If he could just get a bottle of body-strengthening potion, then he, David Bennett, could definitely raise his strength to the level of a martial artist.

But could he get a bottle of body-strengthening potion?

The answer was, of course, no. A hundred thousand yuan—a sum his whole family couldn’t earn in a hundred years.

His mother barely supported him and his siblings by washing clothes for others. How could he even dare to dream of such a thing?

Drop after drop of blood kept flowing from the wounds on David Bennett’s split knuckles, but filled with anger as he was, David Bennett didn’t feel any pain at all.

“Bang!”

With the final punch landing heavily on the broken wooden stake, David Bennett lost his balance and hit his head on the top of the stake.

Exhausted from his desperate training, David Bennett felt his vision go black and collapsed to the ground.

And at the very instant David Bennett fell, the broken wooden stake burst into a dazzling light—no, it was the center of the stake that shone with a brilliant glow. Under this light, the stake crumbled to dust, and a dark-gold orb the size of a baby’s fist shot into David Bennett’s body.

“Host, low-level lifeform...”

“Energy, weak, trash...”

Mechanical voices echoed in the broken cave.

No one knew how much time passed before David Bennett woke up, his head throbbing with pain.

He told himself he could never vent like this again—he was only hurting himself in the end.

Even without a good family background, even if it was hard to get a body-strengthening potion, he still had to become a martial artist!

Struggling to his feet, David Bennett shook his head and discovered that the broken wooden stake he’d picked up some time ago was gone.

Could someone have stolen the wooden stake?

Just as David Bennett was feeling a headache, a panel suddenly appeared in his mind.

Strength: 0.5.

Speed: 0.7.

Spirit: 1.

Constitution: 0.9.

When did something like this appear in his head!

Staring at the numbers in his mind, David Bennett was truly stunned!

“Adjust?” This time, four words appeared on the panel.

Adjust? David Bennett tried setting his strength to 2, wanting to see what would happen.

And the moment David Bennett made the adjustment, the little screen in his mind changed rapidly.

Strength: 2.

Speed: 0.2.

Spirit: 0.5.

Constitution: 0.4.

At first, David Bennett didn’t pay much attention to the changes on the panel, but as soon as the adjustment was complete, he felt a buzzing in his head.

Things that had been clear before suddenly became a bit fuzzy, and an overwhelming sense of exhaustion washed over him.

Exhaustion, immense exhaustion!

What was going on!

David Bennett stood up and walked toward the cave entrance, only to find that his speed had slowed down a lot—it took him half a minute to cover a distance that usually took just over ten seconds.

But when David Bennett’s foot touched a fist-sized rock, the rock shot out like an arrow.

“Bang!”

The rock slammed into a hundred-pound boulder outside, sending that boulder flying as well. This change left David Bennett dumbfounded!

When did his strength become so great!

Could it be because of that adjustment panel that appeared in his mind?
