Chapter 12

“Genius-level computational ability!” The male soldier stared at Edward Baldwin's small body and said quickly, “A person's computational ability can be developed later in life, but being born with precise calculation skills is the mark of a genius. Perfect precision in calculation requires talent and intuition—this child possesses the gift of perfect precision!”

As if afraid the people in the room wouldn’t understand, the male soldier grabbed a bottle of purified water, took a fierce gulp, and said loudly, “An average person can only judge a car accident two seconds before it happens. Those who have been trained can make a judgment nine seconds in advance based on the speed of the car, and those who have received precision calculation training can predict it 13.5 seconds ahead. I can make a prediction at 13 seconds, and this child actually kept pace with me. He was counting on his fingers, his mouth forming a countdown… He really is the promising recruit Instructor Chang had his eye on!”

At that moment, Edward Baldwin ran to the accident scene with his backpack, deftly fished a phone out of the stunned truck driver’s pocket amid the chaos of the crowd, dialed a number, then ran to the motorcyclist lying in a pool of blood and sat beside him, stopping anyone from touching the injured man.

“I want this child!” The male officer said in a deep voice to George Baldwin, “Senior, prepare to say goodbye. We’ll be taking your son away tonight.”

Hearing this, George Baldwin's body trembled violently. His eyes, as he looked at his son, were full of deep love, reluctance, pain, pride… until all those emotions condensed into resolute determination.

“Take him now. Immediately. Right away.” George Baldwin said calmly, a faint smile appearing on his wrinkled face.

The male and female officers glanced at George Baldwin, then turned and strode out.

The bewildered Edward Baldwin was taken away by the two of them, disappearing from George Baldwin's sight.

In an instant, George Baldwin's back hunched over again, and tears silently streamed down his face.

“Old Xiao, was it really necessary…” Henry Grant patted George Baldwin's shoulder and let out a heavy sigh.

“You don’t understand…” George Baldwin looked up, eyes closed with tears, clenching his fists in agony, “I’m sick. I love my son more than anyone, but my love would destroy him—completely destroy him…”

“He’s too young, and the unit he’s going to…”

“Special Class A unit.” George Baldwin slowly opened his eyes, wiped away his tears, and said softly, “Old Sun… Even though I’m sick, when I’m clear-headed… I’m willing to send my last son to the battlefield…”

George Baldwin sat by the window, sometimes crying, sometimes laughing, looking half-crazed.

Henry Grant stood quietly behind him, slowly and firmly saluting this father who had lost everything, holding the salute for a long, long time…

Chapter 0007: The First Friend

China’s regular armed forces are composed of two main parts: the People’s Liberation Army and the People’s Armed Police Force. According to service branches, they can be divided into the Army, Navy, Air Force, Second Artillery Corps, and the Armed Police.

In terms of categories, they can be further divided into Class A, Class B, and Class C units.

Class A units are fully staffed, with a peacetime presence rate of over 97%, are well-equipped, and can be deployed for large-scale warfare at any time. They usually exist in the form of group armies, such as the 1st Group Army, 13th Group Army, 38th Group Army, etc., and also include independently organized special forces in each military region, such as the Eastern Divine Sword and the Southwest Falcon.

Class B units are staffed at 75% to 85% of full strength, have standard equipment, do not serve on combat duty, and are mainly responsible for garrisoning various regions and cities. Because they have less heavy equipment, they are more mobile than Class A units; they also include reconnaissance units and all-weather rapid response units.

Class C units have only about 40% of their authorized personnel, and are mainly responsible for internal stability. They are generally stationed in secondary areas, the innermost regions, and border stability areas, with the Armed Police making up the majority. There are also well-equipped counter-terrorism special forces, including the internationally renowned “Red Vanguard” SPC special forces.

Class A, B, and C units are distributed across the country according to their different functions and tasks, but no matter which unit you’re in, being able to join the special forces means you’re the best of the best.

In addition to these three categories, there is another little-known unit: the Special Class A unit.

The Special Class A unit is the highest-level unit and also the most mysterious, mainly responsible for national missions. Its special forces are organized into three companies: the Martyrs Company, the Special Service Company, and the Red Flag Company.

Every year, the Special Class A unit recruits members aged 7 to 16 from across the country. After multiple rounds of selection, they may become logistics personnel for the unit, join one of the three companies, or be eliminated.

The selection process is extremely strict. In addition to three generations of political vetting, candidates must also possess certain special skills. While it mainly recruits children of the “red” elite, it is also open to civilians.

In the Ten Thousand Mountains, a medium-sized bus sped down a winding mountain road. With every turn, the tires screeched violently, making it clear that the vehicle was not suited for such high-speed driving on this kind of road.

The narrow mountain road had no guardrails at all, and below the road was a sheer cliff—one misstep and you’d be smashed to pieces.
