Chapter 8

To be honest, this was also my first time encountering such a situation, so I really had no idea what to do at first. Normally, once the evil-dispelling talisman is drawn, the patient should wake up, but right now Edward showed no reaction at all. However, at least Edward wasn’t as frightening as before—he was no longer convulsing or foaming at the mouth.

I thought for a moment and wondered if Edward was taking so long to wake up because his yang energy had been severely weakened after being struck by evil spirits.

With that in mind, I told everyone to quickly take off Edward’s clothes.

Although no one knew what I was planning, they still did as I said and hurriedly stripped Edward’s upper body bare.

At this point, I once again formed a hand seal, took up my brush, and began drawing a talisman on Edward’s chest while chanting: “Radiant blazing sun, shine upon the dark, a thousand gods and ten thousand saints, protect his true spirit, his body is covered in golden light, enveloping him, the five mighty forces surge, golden light appear at once, by the order of the law, quickly manifest!”

What I drew was a “Returning Sun Talisman,” which can quickly restore yang energy to those whose yang fire is weak. As the saying goes, every person carries three fires: one atop the head and one on each shoulder. This fire is called yang fire. When the yang fire is strong, no evil can invade. People like Edward, who are susceptible to being struck by evil spirits, usually have poor fortune and weak yang fire. After being struck, their yang fire becomes even weaker, and sometimes all three fires can be extinguished.

After finishing the Returning Sun Talisman, I stopped and quietly waited for Edward to wake up, because at this point I had no other methods left. I had already tried everything I could think of for this condition. If he still didn’t wake up, I would have to come up with another plan.

Fortunately, just as everyone was getting extremely anxious, a sharp-eyed villager suddenly shouted excitedly, “He’s awake, he’s awake, Edward is awake!”

Actually, even without his shout, everyone had already noticed that Edward had woken up, and immediately everyone became excited, finally able to relax after all the worry.

Everyone hurriedly helped Edward sit up and asked him how he was feeling.

Edward just looked at everyone blankly, then asked us in return, “What happened? Why are so many people gathered here?”

As soon as everyone heard this, they all burst out laughing. After all that anxiety, it turned out he didn’t even know what had happened! But hearing him speak put my mind at ease—it meant he was probably fine. Everyone started telling Edward what had happened, and then asked him, “What exactly happened to you just now? Why did you suddenly faint?”

Edward scratched his head and said, “I don’t know either. I just dug up a few stone statues that looked like human heads, so I called everyone over to take a look. Then I suddenly felt dizzy and tight in my chest, and… I don’t remember anything after that!”

When I heard Edward mention the stone statues that looked like human heads, I asked the villagers where the statues were and told them to take me to see them.

The villagers pointed ahead and said they were just over there. Although they said this, no one dared to actually lead the way, clearly frightened by what had happened to Edward.

Seeing everyone so hesitant, I couldn’t help but laugh and said, “Don’t be too scared. Didn’t you all go up to look before? As long as your luck isn’t too bad, you shouldn’t be so easily struck by evil spirits.”

After saying this, I didn’t force them and simply walked ahead by myself, though a few braver villagers followed along.

After a short while, a villager pointed ahead and said, “We’re here, it’s right there. There are several stone heads—really creepy.”

Looking ahead, I saw that the road under construction ended just up ahead, so I quickly walked over.

Sure enough, on the half-excavated slope, several dark, oval-shaped objects were exposed, looking like they were made of stone. I pointed at them and asked the villagers behind me, “Are these the stone heads you were talking about?”

The villagers nodded vigorously and said, “Yes, these things are really weird—they look just like human heads!”

Hearing this, I moved closer to take a careful look, and sure enough, I saw that these stones had actually been carved. Each oval-shaped stone had a human face carved on one side—eyes, nose, ears, and mouth were all visible. Although these statues were very old, the facial features were still clear. They were obviously carved to resemble real people.

I counted and found that the villagers had dug up five or six of these statues. Their facial features were all quite similar, and their expressions were just like ordinary people—not fierce or menacing like some deities. Most of these statues were just heads; it was unclear whether there were bodies buried deeper in the earth.

After I examined them for a while, a villager asked me if I recognized what these things were.

To be honest, it was my first time seeing such things, so I couldn’t really tell what they were. However, I did know that Edward had been struck by evil spirits because he dug these up, so I didn’t dare take it lightly. After all, these statues weren’t buried here by the ancients for fun—they must serve some purpose.
