Chapter 5

Gentle, considerate, and kind—these are all synonyms for Evelyn Carter.

Although he called her Aunt Evelyn over and over, in reality, Evelyn Carter was only a few years older than him, unmarried, just with a more mature temperament. The year his father passed away, his mother left Beijing to teach in the countryside, leaving Alan Cooper all alone here. In the most difficult time of his life, it was Evelyn Carter's smile that brought light to Alan Cooper. Aunt Evelyn would often bring him some stewed meat, keep him company, talk with him, comfort him, and encourage him. For this, Alan Cooper had always been grateful, and gradually developed feelings for her. However, he was self-aware enough to know that he was not good enough for the beautiful Aunt Evelyn, so he could only keep this affection secretly in his heart, telling no one.

Seeing the scene of Evelyn Carter helping her son get dressed, his mom was a bit baffled. She knew that when she was away from Beijing, Evelyn Carter would sometimes bring food to her son, but wasn’t that what all the neighbors did? Bringing things over and chatting—that’s what being neighbors is all about.

But Evelyn's current enthusiasm was beyond Sophie Grant's understanding.

Could it be that Evelyn had feelings for her son? Impossible, the two of them were not a good match at all. Even as Alan Cooper's biological mother, Sophie Grant had to admit that her son really wasn’t a match for Evelyn Carter, and there was no way Evelyn Carter would take a fancy to her son for no reason—Sophie Grant was clear on that. Thinking of this, his mom blinked suspiciously, “Evelyn, you’re bringing food and buying clothes again, what’s this about...?”

“Little Alan, you didn’t tell Ms. Grant?” Evelyn Carter twisted her curvy figure toward Alan Cooper.

“Mm.” Alan Cooper didn’t want his mom to worry, so he hadn’t told her about the car accident.

His mom was taken aback, “What happened?”

Evelyn Carter sighed, her eyes growing slightly moist. “The day before yesterday, at the intersection downstairs, an old man and I were almost hit by a truck. It was Little Alan who stepped up and saved us both. You didn’t see it, it was so dangerous, just a hair’s breadth away...” She shed a couple of tears and couldn’t go on. In the moment of the accident, her mind went blank, her legs felt like they were in a cast and she couldn’t move at all. She thought she was going to die, but Evelyn Carter never expected that the usually quiet and withdrawn Alan Cooper would rush over without a second thought to save her in such a dangerous situation. Evelyn Carter was truly shocked by that scene.

His mom was startled, “That really happened?”

Evelyn Carter wiped her eyes and patted Alan Cooper on the back of his head, her rosy lips pursed gently. “Little Alan, I won’t say thank you anymore. From now on, you’re my real little brother. Ms. Grant, you don’t need to treat me as an outsider. If there’s anything you or Little Alan need help with at home, just let me know.”

Alan Cooper smacked his lips, “Oh, come on, there’s no need to be so polite.”

“What?” Evelyn Carter glanced at him, “You don’t want me as your sister?”

Alan Cooper waved his hands hurriedly, “No, no, that’s not what I meant.” Ahem, why is it sister and not wife? Alan Cooper thought absentmindedly.

Only then did his mom realize what was going on. After asking a few more questions about what happened, she patted Evelyn Carter’s hand and said, “Phew, that was really dangerous. Good thing you’re both okay. Evelyn, these past few years Little Alan has really benefited from your care. We’ve never treated you as an outsider. There are fewer and fewer girls as kind as you these days. Little Alan is lucky to have a sister like you.” His mom really liked Evelyn Carter, this woman whose gentleness went to her very bones, and naturally wanted to have a good relationship with her. Plus, she was going back to the countryside next month, and having someone else looking after Alan Cooper put her mind at ease.

Evelyn Carter scooted her shapely hips closer to Alan Cooper, stroked his head, and smiled brightly, “Don’t say that, it’s my good fortune.” Her plump thighs were faintly pressed against Alan Cooper’s knee, the silky feel of her stockings as tempting as could be.

Alan Cooper immediately felt itchy with desire. To hide his embarrassment, he dodged his head and rolled his eyes, “Aunt Evelyn, I remember you’re only a few years older than me, right? Geez, can you stop patting my head all the time?” Actually, Alan Cooper felt sweet inside—Aunt Evelyn’s fingers and thighs were so soft, ahhh, he couldn’t take it!

His mom and Evelyn Carter both chuckled.

After a while, Evelyn Carter and his mom went arm in arm to the kitchen, chatting happily as they cooked.

After tasting Aunt Evelyn’s unparalleled cooking, the virtuous and gentle Evelyn Carter insisted on washing all the dishes herself.

In the afternoon, while Alan Cooper and his mom weren’t paying attention, Evelyn Carter started wiping the windows with a cloth.

In the evening, Evelyn Carter once again volunteered to cook and wash the dishes, no matter how much Alan Cooper and his mom tried to stop her.

Around 7:30 p.m.

Evelyn Carter rinsed the dish soap off her hands and came out of the kitchen, “The dishes are done, so I’ll head home now?”

Alan Cooper was really afraid she’d wear herself out. “Alright, alright, go get some rest. Look at how tired you are after today, I really feel bad about it.”
