The snake demon that could decide Brian Cooper's fate of life and death was reduced to ashes after three strikes from the black shadow.
Brian Cooper, still shaken, looked at the black shadow that had landed at the foot of the bed.
Only then did he realize it was a tabby cat with complete stripes covering its entire body.
It was sitting there, carefully licking and cleaning the paw that had just killed the snake demon.
It was actually a cat?
Brian Cooper found it hard to associate this tabby cat with the black shadow that had slain such a ferocious snake demon. As he turned, he saw William Grant walking toward him, still appearing as a zombie with a blue face and fangs. Instinctively, he approached the foot of the bed, skillfully picked up the tabby cat by the scruff, and held it in his arms.
Compared to William Grant, the zombie monk, the tabby cat was certainly more ‘approachable.’
Besides, it had just saved his life.
He hugged the tabby cat, muttering, “Good cat, good cat, thank you for saving my life…” and stroked it a couple of times.
Unexpectedly, the cat in his arms suddenly bristled, its fur standing on end, making it look much bigger. It abruptly leapt out of Brian Cooper’s embrace and even swiped at him!
“Meow!”
“What are you doing?
!”
Brian Cooper immediately felt a burning pain on his face, and for a moment, he didn’t even register the sudden female voice that rang out by his ear.
He reached up to touch the scratch on his face, certain that it was bleeding.
Did he need a rabies shot in this situation?
The tabby cat, agile and nimble, leapt through the air and landed on the windowsill, sitting and quietly watching Brian Cooper with a pair of amber eyes. This made it even harder for him to connect the sudden female voice he’d just heard with this tabby cat.
Brian Cooper had been through too much tonight, and with his spirit exhausted, his mind remained somewhat hazy.
At this moment, William Grant spoke: “How are you feeling, elder?
I didn’t expect David Grant’s character to be so twisted, to the point of being dead set on killing an old man who has no enmity with him…
You have suffered.”
As he spoke, he sat down on the edge of the bed.
William Grant’s face had returned to normal, with no trace of the fierce blue face and fangs. It was as if what Brian Cooper had just seen was nothing but an illusion.
But though Brian Cooper’s mind was clouded, he was not delirious.
He knew that what he had just seen and heard could not possibly be a hallucination.
The monk William Grant sitting beside him was a zombie!
But so what if he was a zombie?
Brian Cooper suddenly changed his thinking—if William Grant hadn’t barged in, he would already be dead.
Even if he was a zombie, he was a good zombie who had saved his life!
David Grant…
The one who released the snake demon and tried to kill him was actually David Grant!
William Grant had mentioned before that David Grant’s true heart-Buddha seed was the ‘Serpent Embryo Treasury,’ which could simulate all kinds of snakes.
He had already been somewhat wary of David Grant, who had inexplicably held a grudge against him.
He hadn’t expected the other’s revenge to come so quickly and so viciously!
“David Grant awakened the Serpent Embryo Treasury true seed, and his temperament has gradually changed. By now, he’s become sinister and cruel, vengeful at the slightest provocation.
Today, I stopped him from harming you, and now there is enmity between us.
I know he cannot harm me, so he will surely turn his malice toward you, elder.
But I did not expect that his cultivation has improved recently, and he can now plant three delusive qi seeds in the void, nurturing and giving birth to a snake demon to harm the innocent.
Fortunately, I came tonight to deliver medicine to you, and happened to catch the snake demon in the act, so no real disaster occurred.”
William Grant spoke slowly and gently, allowing Brian Cooper to gradually digest the information in his words.
Brian Cooper looked at the ground and said in a low voice, “Does awakening the true heart-Buddha seed always twist a person’s character?
If David Grant is so vicious, and failed to kill me tonight, won’t he surely try again in the future?”
“Well…” William Grant pondered for a moment, glancing at the tabby cat on the windowsill.
The tabby cat continued to quietly observe Brian Cooper, making no other response.
Chapter 10: The Five Defeat Decoction
William Grant sighed at the sight and said, “Not everyone who awakens the true heart-Buddha seed becomes twisted in mind. It all depends on what kind of true seed one awakens.
In fact, the more wondrous the true seed one comprehends, the less likely it is to affect one’s character.”
Before he finished speaking, the cold, indifferent female voice that had once fallen silent—almost making Brian Cooper think he’d imagined it—sounded again, picking up where William Grant left off: “But such people are ultimately rare. Your lifespan is nearly at its end, your potential is barely existent, and it’s hard for you to become one of them.
Such individuals are always listed in the monastery’s ‘Grand Register of True Transmission,’ and naturally enjoy the monastery’s protection, so there’s no need to worry about being plotted against by the likes of David Grant.”
There are indeed higher and lower grades of true seeds.
If one can comprehend a superior true seed, one can enjoy the protection of the sect, and people like David Grant would not dare to bully them.
Unfortunately, a superior true seed was not something an old body like his could hope for.
He might not even be able to awaken an inferior true seed.
After all, from what William Grant and the others had said, awakening a true seed didn’t seem to be a process based solely on one’s own insight—it was more like some mysterious existence choosing a favored one and planting a seed in them, allowing them to awaken.
But was this tabby cat saying all this just to shatter his hopes?
Brian Cooper raised his aged eyes and looked at the tabby cat on the windowsill.
