At this moment, David Miller greeted Sarah Cooper to sit down while saying to his daughter, “Little Grace, you sit down too. You young people should interact more casually, not be as formal as us! Oh right, Little Grace, your Sarah brother is five years older than you, so just call him Brother Sarah.” But before Grace Miller could say anything, Sarah Cooper quickly interjected, “Uncle David, you’re exposing my age again! Even though I’m a few years older than Little Grace, I consider myself the same age as her! Little Grace, just call me Sarah, okay?”
Grace Miller gave an awkward smile, and after a long pause, she stiffly said, “Sarah...哥.”
Sarah Cooper shrugged and spread his hands, “Great, now that Uncle David has taught you this, it feels like we’re suddenly in a romance drama!”
David Miller burst out laughing at that, and Grace Miller couldn’t help but smile too, the corners of her mouth curving up slightly. Just then, Sarah Cooper suddenly looked over, a faint, elusive smile in his bright eyes. Grace Miller was startled and quickly looked away from him. Her eyes darted around and she saw her mom busy in the kitchen, so she quickly said, “Dad, you guys chat, I’ll go help Mom prepare dinner.” With that, she hurried into the kitchen as if escaping.
In the living room, Sarah Cooper was still saying, “Uncle David, really, I can only stay for a bit. I have plans with friends tonight. Next time, I’ll come again to see you and Auntie, and I’ll definitely stay to taste Auntie’s cooking…”
Grace Miller entered the kitchen and quietly asked her mom, “Mom, who is this? Where did this Mr. Cooper come from? I don’t remember him at all.”
Grace Miller’s mom was washing vegetables. She shook the water off her hands, wiped them with a towel, then turned around and tucked a few strands of hair behind her daughter’s ear. Smiling, she whispered, “He’s one of your dad’s business friends. This is his second son, just returned from studying in the UK. So, what do you think? He looks pretty good, right?”
Grace Miller was stunned for a moment, and a wary look suddenly appeared on her face. “Mom, you guys… What is Dad trying to do?”
Grace Miller’s mom smiled again, as if to reassure her, gently touching her daughter’s cheek and softly saying, “Nothing, nothing. Your dad just heard he came back from studying abroad, so he invited him over to the house, just to get acquainted!”
Hearing this, Grace Miller suddenly felt a tightness in her chest, and that bad feeling grew even stronger.
……
Emily Harris only went over after dinner, heading straight to the KTV.
When she found the private room, the singing was already in full swing. She pushed open the door and saw Brian Scott stand up and wave to her. As she walked in, she said, “Sorry I’m late.”
The singing didn’t stop.
As Emily Harris walked over, she quietly observed the room. Only then did she see clearly that besides Brian Scott and his assistant Edward Parker, there was also a huge fat man who must have weighed at least over two hundred pounds, and on either side of him sat two heavily made-up girls.
At that moment, the fat man was holding the microphone, singing hoarsely, “I love you so much I numb myself, but in your eyes I’m just a mischievous kitty…” He didn’t even glance at Emily Harris.
Emily Harris instinctively wanted to turn around and leave.
Doing business, entertaining clients, and even hiring karaoke girls… She hated every bit of it.
But in the end, she still walked over and sat down next to Brian Scott, forcing a smile for him.
Brian Scott nodded and was about to speak when the song ended. He immediately turned his head, clapped enthusiastically, and said with a laugh, “Great, that was great, Mr. Carter, I’m not just flattering you— with your voice and singing skills, it’s a waste to be in business! You should release an album and become a star!” Edward Parker, sitting on the other side, chimed in with agreement.
Emily Harris lowered her head in disgust.
That Mr. Carter just laughed heartily and said, “Just joking, just joking! When I was young, I did dream of being a star, but now, I don’t dare think about it anymore. Look at my figure… Sigh, I’m old!”
The girl sitting on his right said, “How are you old? You feel young to me…”
The blatant flirtation and seduction in her words made Emily Harris frown, but Mr. Carter just grinned smugly, pulled the girl into his arms, and lecherously asked, “Where did you touch that makes you think I’m young?”
The girl’s hand was still on his crotch, but she pretended to be shy and pushed him away, “Oh, you’re so naughty…”
Mr. Carter roared with laughter.
The other two men in the room laughed along as well.
Just then, Mr. Carter’s gaze shifted and landed on Emily Harris. He was momentarily stunned.
Brian Scott said, “Mr. Carter, another song? What would you like to sing? Edward Parker can pick it for you.”
But Mr. Carter didn’t respond, instead staring at Emily Harris’s face for a long time before turning to Brian Scott with a dissatisfied look and saying, “Little Brian, this is where you’re wrong…” He pointed at Emily Harris, “Such a pretty girl, how can you keep her all to yourself? At least let me, Carter, have a taste, right?”
Emily Harris was stunned when she heard this.
