Chapter 17

Ethan Brooks followed the beautiful landlady up to the top floor of the apartment building. He lived on the sixth floor himself, and the other suites on the sixth floor were all vacant, used by the landlady to store things. Only the lower five floors were rented out. The apartment building opened directly onto the street—there were no so-called residential compounds in America, just streets, or else villa districts. Apartment buildings usually occupied a large area and were always at the end of a street.

The seventh floor was basically a super-large suite, almost the entire floor opened up for the landlady’s family to live in.

Over the past two years, Ethan Brooks had come here many times, mainly to pay rent. After taking a nap, all those memories had pretty much merged together, as if he had done those things himself. Ethan Brooks was quite familiar with the place.

Speaking of the landlady’s “family,” it seemed there were only two people: her and her daughter.

“Wow, Uncle Ace, today Dana thinks Uncle Ace looks even more handsome!” A little blonde, blue-eyed beauty—like a mini version of the landlady—ran over and grabbed Ethan Brooks’s thigh. “I used to think you were just a bad uncle who secretly stared at Mom’s chest, but I didn’t expect you to be so awesome! You beat up that ugly guy from the Rockets!”

Little lolis are the best! Five- or six-year-old lolis are just too adorable.

But Ethan Brooks still remembered that it was this seemingly explosively cute but actually extremely tsundere little loli who tricked him into renting at this expensive apartment. Back when the building had just been completed, not a single unit had been rented out, and even the little loli was out doing sales.

Also, poor Francis—was it just because he looked too African that he got called ugly? Well, to be fair, most black people do tend to be less attractive.

Led by little sister Dana, Ethan Brooks entered the living room and saw the breakfast on the table.

This... Ethan Brooks looked at the sumptuous breakfast spread and felt something was off. There was definitely something off.

Back in college, Ethan Brooks had come over to mooch a meal more than once when he was broke. After all, the school team didn’t have training or games every day, and there were still classes to attend. Most of the time, he had to feed himself, and the team only provided lunch. Breakfast and dinner were on his own.

But when had Ethan Brooks ever seen these two beauties—one big, one small—prepare such a lavish breakfast table?

Before, it was always just a few slices of bread, a bottle of ketchup, maybe an egg, at most some hot milk, and barely a few pieces of vegetables. But today there was French cream soup, vegetables, bread, tender beef slices, egg tarts, miso soup, Pacific saury, natto... there was even a plate of meat buns!

Breakfasts from China, the West, and Japan—all together!

Was it a holiday today? Christmas was still more than a month away! Even last Christmas, the landlady had just casually bought him a burger for breakfast!

Ethan Brooks felt a bit uneasy. What was the landlady up to?

No, what was she after?

Ethan Brooks knew himself well—there was no way the beautiful landlady had taken a liking to him.

Even though this apartment building wasn’t far from Philips Arena, it wasn’t exactly downtown, more like the outskirts. But because of the convenient transportation, proximity to the subway, and the fact that both the Hawks’ home court, Philips Arena, and the Atlanta Falcons’ NFL stadium, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, were nearby, this apartment building was worth at least ten million US dollars.

And Ethan Brooks was just a second-round pick. The average NBA second-rounder’s career lasted less than three years, and last season, the average salary for all active second-rounders in the NBA was less than a million dollars. He knew that even as an NBA player, if things didn’t go well, he might only make a million or two in his whole career, and that would be it. There was no way the landlady was interested in him.

As for Ethan Brooks being handsome? He didn’t think he was all that good-looking—at best, he had delicate features. And he definitely wasn’t richer than the landlady.

So Ethan Brooks felt even more uneasy. He picked up a meat bun he hadn’t had in ages and took a couple of bites, feeling even stranger.

Because both beauties, one big and one small, were staring at him.

He couldn’t eat this lavish breakfast! Ethan Brooks smiled wryly and asked, “Lavia, Dana, why are you staring at me?”

“It’s nothing, we’re not rushing you. It’s Saturday, Dana doesn’t have school today. Take your time, eat more,” the landlady said with a smile.

“Yeah, Uncle, eat more! Eat till you’re full, so you’ll have the strength to work hard and beat up Iverson tonight, just like you beat up that ugly uncle Francis yesterday!” Little loli Dana said, clenching her fist.

So that’s what this was about!

Ethan Brooks thought, so that’s it. He suddenly remembered that Americans have a much stronger sense of sports loyalty than Chinese people. Most people in Europe and America are die-hard fans of their teams. The landlady and her daughter’s favorite team was the Hawks. No wonder they were being so attentive today—so that was the reason.

Speaking of the 76ers, people still remembered them as last season’s second-strongest team in the league. Last season, the 76ers swept almost all the regular season awards: Iverson was MVP, Larry Brown was Coach of the Year, Mutombo was Defensive Player of the Year, Aaron McKie was Sixth Man of the Year, and their owner Joshua Harris was Executive of the Year. Except for Most Improved Player, they took all five of the most important regular season awards.
