Chapter 6

Even the apps on that phone were carefully selected—a whole bunch of the most popular apps and games among teenagers these days, each with meticulously faked usage traces. Even if someone cracked the password and checked, they wouldn’t find anything unusual.

As for the pair of “parents” he hired, after dropping him off at this center, they immediately boarded a flight from Long County to Southern Cross County. They still had a role to play in another “setup” of Ethan Logan.

Put it this way: even if you swapped the current dorm supervisor for a prison guard, and changed the environment to a high-security federal prison, Ethan Logan’s infiltration this time wouldn’t be exposed… at least not in the short term.

“Oh.” A second later, Ethan Logan responded softly to the dorm supervisor, in case staying silent for too long would anger the other party or arouse suspicion.

After shaking out his clothes, the dorm supervisor gestured for Ethan Logan to walk ahead: “Go forward.”

“Where to?” Ethan Logan knew the procedure, but he had to pretend he didn’t.

“Just walk ahead. I’ll tell you when to stop.” The dorm supervisor replied coldly.

This was also one of the rules here: when only one dorm supervisor was present and the “patient’s” movements weren’t restricted, the supervisor had to walk behind the patient.

So, Ethan Logan walked through the corridor, went up a flight of stairs, passed through two electronic doors that only the supervisor could open, and finally arrived at the door of a dorm room.

Upon arrival, the supervisor scanned his fingerprint on the touchscreen, opened the door, and motioned for Ethan Logan to go in. Once Ethan Logan entered, the supervisor left him with a sentence: “This is your room. Get up at six every morning and finish washing up and getting ready within half an hour.” Then he closed the door and left.

There was a light in this dorm room, but since lights-out had already passed, it was off, and there was no switch in the room.

Fortunately, there was still a window to the outside. Although both sides of the glass were covered with interwoven iron mesh, it didn’t stop the moonlight from shining in.

In the moonlight, faint outlines sketched the scene inside the room.

It was a double room, not bunk beds—two beds placed parallel on either side of the room. When Ethan Logan entered, someone was already on one of the beds. Judging by his posture, he must have fallen asleep before Ethan Logan came in, but Ethan Logan’s arrival had just woken him.

“New here, huh…” the person mumbled to Ethan Logan in the dark. Without waiting for a reply, he sighed and continued, “Sigh… just go to sleep. Whatever you want to say, save it for tomorrow.”

With that, he turned over, pulled up the covers, and went back to sleep.

In the darkness, Ethan Logan showed a faint smile, but quickly suppressed it.

Two seconds later, Ethan Logan rolled his neck from side to side, walked over to the empty bed, and lay down.

Then, he began to think…

He wouldn’t sleep.

Not tonight, not tomorrow night.

Ever since he could remember, he had never slept.

He didn’t need sleep, and in fact, couldn’t sleep.

For most people, this might be a terrifying experience that could drive someone insane, but Ethan Logan thought it was great—rather than spending a third or more of his life sleeping, he’d rather use that time to think.

When others finished their day and let their brains rest, Ethan Logan would be sorting memories, reviewing details, categorizing information, and making predictions and assumptions about everything that was about to or could happen.

It was like the meditation training athletes do in competitive sports, except Ethan Logan’s meditation wasn’t for “a particular match,” but for a much grander game.

“During the day, I saw six staff members from the institution, including the one who brought me here. Plus this boy next to me… The seven people I’ve seen so far are all recorded in the known data.

“However… that doesn’t prove anything…

“‘Faceless’ can disguise as anyone—not just facial features, but even height, build, voice, gender, fingerprints can all change. It’s impossible to identify them with brief contact.

“But since ‘that person’s’ intel says he’s here, he must be here. As long as he’s in the same place as me, I’ll definitely be able to root him out. What I need now is patience, acting skills, and… a bit of luck.”

This time, Ethan Logan had two “tasks” to accomplish by infiltrating this internet addiction center. Finding “Faceless” was just one of them; the other plan would proceed simultaneously. But in terms of variables and difficulty, the first task was the trickier one.

He lay there with his eyes closed, pretending to sleep while thinking, and before he knew it, an hour had passed.

An hour later—more precisely, at exactly midnight… suddenly! Ethan Logan opened his eyes a crack.

In that instant, he was keenly aware that a figure was already standing by his bed, and… staring at him.
