Chapter 20

At this table sat the producers and assistant directors, all around forty years old, so as the conversation went on, it drifted from movies to other topics, like stock trading and vehicle performance.

“Mindy, over nine hundred liters of fake blood, and the costumes and props are so strange—this film isn’t going to be like Director Carter’s last one, is it?” The agent Sister Lane asked hesitantly.

No wonder—this kind of bloodbath, in Sister Lane’s memory, even in the bare-chested, guts-spilling films of the sixties and seventies, they never used so much fake blood.

“Although this film’s style is indeed a mix—there’s martial arts, western cowboys, even Japanese samurai designs—Director Carter isn’t adding these just to attract viewers, but has a clear goal.” Mindy Foster said, “Director Carter knows exactly what he wants to shoot.”

“And since we’ve signed the contract, we have to support the director’s filming.” Mindy Foster put down her chopsticks, having almost finished eating.

As the biggest star in the crew, Mindy Foster was toasted the second most, but she could really hold her liquor—maybe it’s because she’s from Sichuan—so even after two rounds of toasts, she could still eat and drink as usual, which made many people feel intimidated.

When the gathering finally ended, the crew’s accountant paid the bill. The amount didn’t matter; the main thing was to get an invoice. To avoid mistakes, the accountant only ate vegetables and didn’t drink, just joined in the fun without raising a glass.

“Teacher White, what about Director Carter?” Mindy Foster addressed Shawn Carter as “teacher.”

Mindy Foster and Teacher White stayed behind to clean up the aftermath—the former because she couldn’t get drunk, the latter because she had a stomach problem and couldn’t touch alcohol.

“I called Director Carter’s roommate; they should be here soon,” said Teacher White.

“That’s good. I already had my driver take Darlene, Erin Ray, and Thomas Bolton home,” said Mindy Foster.

“That’s good.” Teacher White nodded. She said, “Little Mindy, it’s getting late, you should go back and rest. I’ll wait here.”

“It’s late now, and it’s not easy for you to get a cab. I’ll take Teacher White home on my way,” said Mindy Foster.

Teacher White thought for a moment, then nodded without refusing. The two of them waited at the entrance of Lao Shuake, and about ten minutes later, the roommates Ethan White and Little Charlie arrived.

The Beijing Film Academy dorms have only two buildings, with six-person, five-person, four-person, and eight-person rooms. Which bed you get depends on luck, since dorms are assigned by department.

The conditions aren’t great but not bad either—no private bathrooms, but each floor has a public restroom. Overall, it’s okay. The only thing worth complaining about is that the fruit in the small supermarket is too expensive.

Back to the point, Shawn Carter lives in a five-person room, but it’s impossible for all roommates to be close. For example, the original host only got along okay with two of them, so only Little Charlie and Ethan White came.

“Hello, Teacher White.” The two greeted Teacher White respectfully when they saw her, then noticed Mindy Foster standing beside her...

Chapter 12: Thick-Skinned Enough

“It’s Sister Cat.”

“Sister Cat, I’m your fan.”

Ethan White and Little Charlie blurted out. Even though they were at the Beijing Film Academy, it was still rare to see celebrities outside of school events. As for famous classmates... well, you just hear about them.

Celebrities all have nicknames online. For example, a certain Mi is called “Big Mi Mi,” a certain Dongyu is called “Little Yellow Duck.” These people don’t exist in this parallel world, but the logic is the same. Mindy Foster’s nickname is Sister Cat, or Big Cat.

She got this nickname from her old Weibo handle: Big Cat Punished to Stand. After she became famous, she changed her Weibo name, but her signature is still “Big Cat Punished to Stand.”

“Sister Cat, can we get your autograph?” Little Charlie asked, and Ethan White nodded vigorously beside him.

“Thank you for your support, of course no problem.” Mindy Foster looked at Sister Lane beside her. The latter understood, but spread her hands to show she hadn’t brought a pen or notebook.

“I have paper and a pen.” Teacher White took a small notepad and a fountain pen from her shoulder bag.

Mindy Foster borrowed them and gave the two their autographs. Teacher White also noticed that even when Mindy Foster goes out shopping, she never carries a bag. You know, ordinary girls always need to touch up their makeup when they go out, so they have to bring at least lipstick and a mirror, not to mention keys and tissues, and of course an umbrella and power bank. During special times, sanitary pads are a must. Anyway, no one knows why Mindy Foster never brings a bag when she goes out, and even her agent Sister Lane only brings a wallet.

“Please take care of Director Carter.” Mindy Foster handed over the autographs.

“No problem, leave it to us,” said Little Charlie and Ethan White.

Teacher White added, “If anything comes up, call me. You both have my number.”

After repeated reminders, Little Charlie and Ethan White helped Shawn Carter into a taxi, one on each side in the back seat.

“I really didn’t expect Shawn Carter’s movie to actually get Sister Cat as the lead. That’s amazing,” Ethan White said in shock.

Previously, when the open casting call was posted on the forum, even though it said the investment was in the millions, not many people believed it. Most thought it would be like last time, just casting Beijing Film students. No one expected Mindy Foster to be involved.

“If Sister Cat calls him Director Carter, then it must be true,” Little Charlie thought, wondering why the gap between people could be so big.

“So that means Shawn Carter is making an action film.” Little Charlie paused, then added, “That’s quite a leap.”

“If one day Sister Cat calls me Director White, then I’ll have truly made it.” Even though Ethan White is just a nickname, his surname is indeed Bai.
