As for her name? William Harris wasn’t really sure.
In the past, his mind was muddled, and he couldn’t remember many things, so he always just called her “auntie,” even forgetting The Harris Family’s real name.
The Harris Family led the yellow ox into the yard and tied it directly in the cowshed.
William Harris followed behind, carrying Olivia Harris, and after tying up the ox for The Harris Family, he finally put down Olivia Harris, holding her little hand as they walked into the main hall.
In this large house, only three people lived.
“Younger sister, go fetch some water. Eldest brother, you’ve worked hard all day—wash up first, dinner will be ready soon.”
Olivia Harris answered and ran out to fetch water.
William Harris said, “Auntie, I’ll go pay my respects to Grandpa first, I’ll be back in a bit.”
David Harris had passed away two years ago, but William Harris still offered incense to him every day, which was his way of paying respects.
The Harris Family agreed and went to the kitchen to prepare dinner. William Harris then passed through the main hall and entered the backyard.
In the backyard, there was a flower garden, right beside a small stream.
On each side stood a wing room, each with three rooms. When David Harris was alive, Robert Harris would bring his family to visit on every rest day. But after David Harris passed away, the house became much quieter. Robert Harris’s family was used to living in the county town, and except for set days of ancestral rites, he rarely stayed here.
Still, every room was kept tidy.
The Harris Family was a diligent woman, cleaning the rooms every day.
By now, night had fully fallen.
William Harris entered one of the wing rooms, lit an oil lamp, then walked to the ancestral tablet in the room and lit three sticks of incense.
“Grandpa, I’m back!”
After offering incense, he sat in front of the tablet, as if talking to himself: “Today Da Huang went wild and almost hurt some village kids. Luckily, I practiced martial arts with you since I was little and have some strength, so I managed to subdue Da Huang… Fortunately, nothing happened, or else there would’ve been more gossip, and I’d be in trouble again.”
As William Harris spoke, his eyes grew a little red.
Seventeen years after being reborn, though those years were muddled and wasted, they also let William Harris experience a different kind of happiness. Robert Harris didn’t care for him, but Grandpa cherished him like a treasure.
Honestly, he hadn’t suffered much these seventeen years. Instead, under Grandpa’s care, he lived carefree. His mind was clouded, so he couldn’t sense the malice around him, and every day was happy and simple.
Practicing, learning martial arts, herding cattle, listening to Grandpa’s stories…
Seventeen years passed, and without realizing it, he had already blended into this era.
“Alice is all better now, and never gets headaches anymore.
But I don’t feel happy, because lately I keep having a strange dream—a woman calls me ‘Prince Consort’ in the dream.
Hehe, do you think I’m just daydreaming?”
After speaking, he knelt and bowed three times before the tablet, then stood up and said, “No matter what, I won’t forget what you taught me, Grandpa. Alice will keep practicing diligently. Auntie treats me well, and younger sister is very obedient—she’s even learned to do laundry now… Well, that’s all for today, Grandpa, you should rest early too.”
Chatting with Grandpa in front of the ancestral tablet every day had become a habit for William Harris.
He did this even when his mind was unclear. Now that he was clear-headed, he hadn’t changed this habit.
He left the room and gently closed the door.
Just then, a noise came from the main hall’s courtyard, followed by the sound of the younger sister crying.
William Harris’s heart tightened, and he rushed back to the main hall in a few quick steps.
In front of the porch, a basin of water had been knocked over, spilling water all over the floor and making the porch even wetter.
The younger sister sat in a puddle, crying loudly.
A young boy stood under the porch, loudly scolding The Harris Family.
“You wretched maid, what a mess you’ve made! Why did you leave the basin at the door and dirty my clothes… Do you know these clothes are brand new, worth three hundred coins? Can you afford to pay for them? And you, little brat, if you dare cry again, I’ll sell you off.”
The boy was aggressive, and The Harris Family was so frightened she didn’t dare speak.
Hearing she might be sold, the younger sister stopped crying, sitting on the ground and looking at the boy, sobbing from time to time.
A surge of anger rose in William Harris’s heart.
He strode out of the main hall and picked up the younger sister.
“Well, isn’t this my Annie big brother?”
Before William Harris could speak, the boy cut in: “Big brother, how do you teach these two wretched maids? They have no manners at all. I knocked on the door for ages and no one came to greet me—I had to open the door myself! Outrageous.
But then again, I forgot, big brother, you… How about I find someone sensible for you, sell off these two wretched maids, and then you can live more comfortably?”
Hearing she might be sold, the younger sister clung tightly to William Harris’s neck.
“Sophie brother, I’ll be good, Sophie brother, please don’t sell me, I’ll be very obedient.”
Alice was William Harris’s childhood name.
