Chapter 20

Brian Carter felt a sudden surge of anger in his heart, abruptly raising his voice and impatiently interrupting, “I told you to speak, so just speak!”

The little girl was clearly frightened by him. This wooden-faced senior brother was so scary! Her urge to cry vanished, and she instinctively replied, “There isn’t enough Qingjianchang for Abby and the others to eat.”

“Who is Abby?” Brian Carter glanced at her and asked.

“Abby... Abby is just Abby. It needs to eat Qingjianchang every day. Wuwu, there isn’t enough Qingjianchang...” As she spoke, she started to cry again.

“Shut up!” Brian Carter’s angry shout was anything but friendly. The little girl was startled, instinctively shrinking back, fear appearing on her face, but at least she stopped crying.

Looking at this muddle-headed little girl, Brian Carter rubbed his forehead in frustration. Although he had never been to the beast-keeping room, he at least knew the basic rules. The amount of spiritual herbs needed for spirit beasts usually didn’t fluctuate much, and the sect had special spiritual fields for growing these herbs.

Growing spiritual herbs was much easier than spiritual grains, so most of the tending was done by female disciples in charge of the beasts.

Could there be something wrong with these spiritual herbs?

“What’s going on? Be more specific.”

Section Ten: Weeds

Faced with this unfamiliar senior brother who had appeared out of nowhere, the little girl was clearly a bit scared. She explained everything honestly: “There’s a very strange kind of grass growing in the spiritual field. Little Grace works really hard, really hard, but it just keeps growing and growing so fast. The Qingjianchang is so pitiful, it’s growing slower and slower...”

Seeing the little girl’s voice getting lower and her mouth starting to pout, Brian Carter quickly interrupted, “Stop!”

The little girl was startled again, lifting her misty, wide eyes to look at Brian Carter in confusion.

Brian Carter stood up and brushed the dirt off his backside. “Let’s go.”

The little girl’s face was full of question marks. After a while, she timidly asked, “Where are we going?”

That timid look on her face always managed to irritate Brian Carter. His just-calmed mood was instantly ruffled again, and he said with extreme impatience, “Why so many questions! Just go when I tell you to!”

Stay calm, stay calm. It’s pointless to argue with a little girl like this, Brian Carter told himself.

He softened his tone, doing his best to appear calm. “Let’s go take a look at your spiritual field.”

Although Wukong Sword Sect was a small sect, it was fully equipped despite its size. The beast-keeping room was located on the east peak of Wukong Mountain, and most of the outer female disciples lived there as well.

It was Brian Carter’s first time setting foot on the east peak, and the scenery along the way surprised him. Compared to the gentle slopes of the west peak, the east peak was steep and the views were even better. Since it was home to the female disciples, the mountain paths were lined with flowers and plants, making the walk refreshing and pleasant.

The east and west peaks were quite far apart, and it was rare for male disciples to come here.

Amidst the forest, a small snow-white house could be seen in the distance. The little girl perked up, glanced timidly at Brian Carter, and pointed at the house. “Senior brother, that’s Little Grace’s house.”

Brian Carter couldn’t be bothered to speak and walked straight toward the house.

As he got closer, he noticed that on the grass beside the house, there was a bull with a golden horn on its head and a body that looked as if it were cast from bronze, lazily basking in the sun.

“AbbyAbby!” Little Grace saw the bronze bull and called out joyfully, running over in excitement.

Abby...

Brian Carter looked at the powerful build of the bronze bull, then thought of that cute name, and was left speechless.

Then he saw the bronze bull affectionately nudge Little Grace with its head, occasionally sticking out its tongue to lick Little Grace’s little hand.

That big, slobbery tongue made Brian Carter feel a wave of disgust.

“Where’s the spiritual field?” He had to interrupt, otherwise he seriously suspected that this girl and the bull could play together endlessly.

In the spiritual field, Brian Carter carefully examined the grass in front of him.

It was a type of grass he had never seen before, and that alone made him pay close attention. After all, he had been growing spiritual grains for two years and was very familiar with the common grasses in the fields. But he was certain he had never seen this kind of grass before.

After inspecting the spiritual field, he became even more cautious.

“When did you first notice them?”

“About three months ago. Little Grace weeds every day, but they just keep growing more and more...” Little Grace’s mouth started to pout again, and tears were about to fall.

Brian Carter looked at her expressionlessly.

Little Grace shrank back a little, her urge to cry vanishing. This senior brother was so fierce!

Brian Carter withdrew his gaze, secretly alarmed. This weed had a very strong ability to reproduce.

“What about the others?”

“A lot of the older sisters’ spiritual fields are like this too. They can’t find a good solution either.” At this, she suddenly stammered, “Senior brother, could you help the older sisters too?”

Brian Carter ignored her, focusing instead on how to deal with this weed. Planting always came with many problems, and weeding was one of the most common. But if the spiritual field was overrun with rampant weeds, the problem became very tricky.

Simple weeding clearly wouldn’t solve it. Now, the weeds were thriving in the field, while the Qingjianchang was sparse.

Brian Carter’s gaze suddenly fell on the part of the weed near the soil, where there was a ring of bulges like tumors. His heart stirred, and he checked a few more weeds, finding the same bulges at their bases.
