Chapter 9

Although such high speed was a bit too conspicuous, Eric Bennett didn’t care much about that, as he wanted to reach the Emily Bennett Immortal Island in the South Sea as soon as possible. Besides, he was already flying over the usual fishing grounds far from the coast, where there were usually no boats, so there was no need to worry about accidentally harming anyone.

At this time, the sky was dimming, the sun was about to slip into the western sea, and the clouds of the second day, reflecting the morning glow, turned a deep purple, with golden light like sheets—truly magnificent. However, Eric Bennett had no time to admire it. Looking into the distance, a small island had already come into his view.

Although this small island looked ordinary, in Eric Bennett’s eyes, he could see various colors of light invisible to ordinary people weaving into a net above the entire island. This net covered the whole island, floating thirty zhang above it. If it were just a passing sword immortal or the like, they could easily fly over the net, but only those who specifically came here would fly so low.

As soon as he approached the net and touched the colored light, Eric Bennett immediately sensed the net react. Although it was not aggressive, it definitely sent out an alert.

Eric Bennett stopped his Supreme Purity Immortal Escape and, without waiting for the disciples below to come up and ask, spoke out: “Eric Bennett of the Purple Gorge Cave, requests an audience with Immortal Emily Bennett!”

Although his voice was soft, it instantly penetrated all the layers of defense, needing no disciple to relay the message, and directly reached the palace gardens at the center of Emily Bennett Immortal Island.

Though simple, this immediately demonstrated Eric Bennett’s outstanding strength.

Although the Purple Gorge Cave was a secluded Daoist lineage, it had been around for over a thousand years. It was likely that a long-standing sect like Emily Bennett Immortal Island would have heard of its existence.

At this moment, two sword lights flew up from below. As they drew near, it became clear they were two young Daoist boys. They exuded an immortal aura, graceful as jade. Upon seeing Eric Bennett, one of them stepped forward and saluted: “Fellow Daoist, what brings you to our Emily Bennett Immortal Island? If you wish to see our island master, please wait a moment while we report to her.”

“Then I’ll trouble you both.”

“Not at all, this is our duty.”

Their words were very polite, and their tone was modest, displaying the bearing of disciples from an ancient sect. Eric Bennett took a great liking to the two of them.

Just then, the sound of a golden bell rang out from below, its tone clear and melodious, reaching all the way up. The bell rang twelve times before stopping, followed by the playing of delicate music—celestial melodies and Daoist tunes, the sheng and reed pipes soft and pleasing, making it even more delightful to the ear.

The two boys were immediately astonished. This was the most precious of welcoming ceremonies—even the head of an ordinary sect might not receive such grand treatment. Their expressions became even more respectful, and they no longer addressed him as “Fellow Daoist,” but as “Immortal.”

“Immortal Eric Bennett, please follow us.”

Eric Bennett nodded. Hearing this welcoming music, he knew the other party had already recognized his identity and was treating him as an honored guest. He too should display the bearing befitting the head of a Daoist lineage.

As he slowly descended with the two boys, Eric Bennett took a good look at the small island. It wasn’t large, only a few dozen square kilometers, but it had clearly been transformed—forests, meadows, lakes, and streams made it look very beautiful. In the center were palaces and gardens, splendid and magnificent.

Landing on the plaza, after walking more than ten zhang, there was a moon gate about the size of a corridor, built of white jade—this was the entrance, and behind it were the palaces.

On the plaza, two people were already waiting. Seeing the Daoist boys had brought the guest, a middle-aged cultivator holding a jade tablet in his hands saluted Eric Bennett: “It is a great honor to welcome Immortal Eric Bennett. My master has been cultivating in the inner chamber for many years and is unable to greet you in person. Please forgive us, Immortal.”

“Not at all, it is I, Eric Bennett, who have come uninvited and disturbed you. The fault is mine!”

“You are too polite, Immortal. Please, my master is waiting for you inside!” As the middle-aged cultivator spoke, he waved his hand, and the main gate slowly opened. Two rows of warriors, each a zhang tall, shaped like giants, clad in armor and holding golden halberds, were pushing the doors. Eric Bennett saw the red light flashing in their eyes and knew these warriors were actually magical treasures used for defense.

Entering the gate, Eric Bennett saw a grand hall inside, spacious enough for hundreds to stand without crowding. The surroundings were encircled by jade pillars and crystal walls, shining silver like snow. In the palace, more than twenty attendants stood in rows, all dressed in feathered robes and starry crowns, with cloud-shoulder Daoist buns—exquisitely elegant and beautiful, clearly members of the palace.

At the center of the hall, on a jade throne, sat an old man in white Daoist robes. His face was as fair as jade, with two long, slender eyebrows hanging down. The middle-aged cultivator had already stepped forward and bowed, announcing, “Immortal Eric Bennett of the Purple Gorge Cave has arrived.”

As a guest, Eric Bennett naturally returned the courtesy with a slight bow. The old man had already started laughing: “Immortal Eric Bennett, there’s no need for such formality! You and I are rare figures in this world—why bother with these rituals?”

At this, the attendants on either side all knelt together: “Greetings to Immortal Eric Bennett!”

Eric Bennett waved his hand: “Since we’re dispensing with formalities, there’s no need for them to salute me.”

“That’s different—they are our juniors, so of course they must pay their respects to an Immortal.”

“Not at all, just call me Eric Bennett.”

“Haha, then you can just call me Emily Bennett.”

The two of them looked at each other and laughed.

Emily Bennett then said, “Since you have already paid your respects to Immortal Eric Bennett, all unrelated persons should withdraw at once and return to your duties—do not slack off.”
