Charles Goodwin, known as the direct heir of the Yang-style Tai Chi, is the vice president of the Beijing Tai Chi Association and a renowned Tai Chi master in the capital and its surroundings. If it weren’t for Samantha Ford personally inviting him, he wouldn’t have bothered wasting his time teaching a few college students.
Brian Perry shot an annoyed glance at Charles Goodwin, then darted forward and pressed the button on the recorder. Calming himself, he relaxed his shoulders and extended his arms, beginning to perform Tai Chi in time with the music. His movements were exceptionally graceful and fluid, appearing elegant and full of aesthetic beauty, with each move flowing smoothly into the next, the transitions subtle and unpredictable. As he continued, his moves became more vigorous and powerful, each technique executed with precision, naturally connected, swift as a storm, yet gentle as a babbling brook.
The team members, including Steven Joyce, watched in a daze, while Samantha Ford’s eyes sparkled as she quietly gazed at Brian Perry performing, a look of astonishment curving her lips.
When the music stopped, Brian Perry finished his routine and stood calmly in place, cupping his fists in salute to Charles Goodwin, saying, “I got carried away for a moment, please forgive my poor display!”
Charles Goodwin was a discerning man and could tell that this young man before him had a deep foundation in Tai Chi. But as an authority in Beijing’s Tai Chi community, a so-called master, how could he lose face in front of a young stranger like Brian Perry? So he just sneered coldly and said, “Young man, what you’re doing is just flashy moves, all show and no substance.”
Brian Perry secretly glanced at Samantha Ford from the corner of his eye. Seeing her standing there, deep in thought, he gritted his teeth and cupped his fists to Charles Goodwin again, saying, “Teacher, please give me your guidance!”
Chapter 009 Tai Chi Coach (Part 2)
Samantha Ford and the others slowly moved aside, clearing the space.
No matter how disdainful Charles Goodwin was, at this point he couldn’t refuse to put aside his airs and accept the near-challenge from Brian Perry.
“Teacher, please give me your guidance!” After saluting, Brian Perry took his stance.
This match with Charles Goodwin was purely on a whim; win or lose, it didn’t matter to him. His real goal was simply to find a way to get closer to Samantha Ford.
However, after just one round with Charles Goodwin, a brief probe told Brian Perry that this man’s reputation was greatly exaggerated—his moves were all for show, but his fundamentals were poor. Plus, due to his age, his energy and strength were lacking, and his control was weak.
Tai Chi mainly focuses on self-cultivation and character building, and most matches are for exchange, rarely leaving the opponent embarrassed. But to attract Samantha Ford’s attention, Brian Perry didn’t care whether Charles Goodwin would be humiliated or not.
The Tai Chi routine Brian Perry practiced already incorporated elements from Xingyi and other martial arts, emphasizing offense and practicality. After just two rounds, Charles Goodwin was clearly struggling.
Brian Perry let out a long breath, pulled his left hand to the side, slid smoothly, and with a light shake of his shoulder, used the “four ounces deflect a thousand pounds” technique to send Charles Goodwin flying. Charles Goodwin staggered back several steps, lost control, and fell flat on his back.
Off to the side, Samantha Ford and the others gasped in shock, hardly able to believe their eyes.
This Charles Goodwin was a famous Tai Chi master, the designated Tai Chi coach at the high-ranking officials’ sanatorium. In September, Jinghua University was to celebrate its 90th anniversary, and the Tai Chi performance by Samantha Ford and her team was one of the evening gala’s programs. She had gone to great lengths to invite Charles Goodwin as their instructor, but to think that this renowned master would be defeated by an unknown young man.
Brian Perry went over to help Charles Goodwin up, but Charles Goodwin, humiliated and furious, could not accept his kindness. He got up and, without even uttering a word of courtesy, left in shame and anger.
Everyone was stunned, at a complete loss.
Steven Joyce was dazed for a moment, then whispered, “Brother Peng, you…”
Brian Perry gave an embarrassed smile and said, “Sorry, everyone, I lost control for a moment. My apologies, really, my apologies!”
With that, Brian Perry turned to leave. But his steps were slow, as he was sure Samantha Ford would call out to stop him.
Sure enough, Samantha Ford stared at Brian Perry with displeasure and said in a low voice, “You’re really something—chasing our coach away and then just leaving like that?”
Brian Perry turned around with a wry smile. “I didn’t mean for this to happen. I really didn’t expect your coach’s fundamentals to be so poor… I truly didn’t do it on purpose!”
Samantha Ford frowned and glanced at Steven Joyce.
The look was to ask Steven Joyce who this person really was.
Steven Joyce quickly ran over and whispered a few words in Samantha Ford’s ear, then came back and said with a smile, “Brother Peng, I really didn’t expect you to be such a Tai Chi expert. How about this—you be our coach and help us train for a few days!”
Samantha Ford said nothing, but her clear gaze remained fixed on Brian Perry.
Brian Perry hesitated awkwardly, “Xiaobo, I don’t mind helping you train for a few days, but I’m here in Beijing on business, so time is a bit tight…”
As he spoke, Brian Perry glanced at Samantha Ford from the corner of his eye, but Samantha Ford just stood there calmly, showing no reaction at all.
Instead, Steven Joyce, having received Samantha Ford’s approval, pleaded repeatedly, “Brother Peng, please help us out. It’s just for a week, and we only practice two hours each morning. It won’t interfere with your business.”
