Chapter 3

Can Shang explained, “Originally, demons were hidden within slices of history and unable to interfere with reality, but as time passes and their power grows, the situation changes.

“You can think of history as a river connecting ancient times to the present. Demons occupy the slices of history from ancient times and continuously seep toward the present.

“The longer the history, the thinner people’s memories of the past become, and the easier it is for demons to infiltrate.

“And when demons reach the slices of history close to reality and alter them, they can, through certain means, briefly overlap the two and enter reality.

“It’s like splashes from a rushing current—sometimes they can leap over the embankment and reach the shore.”

Henry Clark felt a headache coming on.

“Do firearms have any effect on demons?”

Brian Clark nodded. “Firearms do have some effect on demons, and early warnings can indeed reduce casualties. But when slices of history overlap with reality, demons can appear anywhere in the world—for example, in the bustling downtown of a city with tens of millions of people.

“So, it’s impossible to completely avoid civilian casualties.

“What’s more, demons also possess mental attack abilities. If they really invade on a large scale, no matter how advanced human technology is, it won’t be enough to stop them.

“The best way is to switch from defense to offense—proactively enter the slices of history where the demons reside and eliminate the threat once and for all before they overlap with reality.

“This was the method the original Henry Clark tried, but he failed.”

Henry Clark let out a soft sigh. “Then what are we waiting for? Hurry up and arrange training for me so I can master the combat abilities of an Order Keeper!”

Brian Clark nodded. “Yes, that’s exactly what I was thinking.”

She raised her hand, and four semi-transparent, water-rippled light screens appeared in front of Henry Clark, like four different portals.

“These are the four trials that every Order Keeper must pass before gaining their abilities.

“They represent four different identities: assassin, scholar, soldier, and chivalrous hero.

“For an Order Keeper, you must pass all four trials to qualify for the ability to enter slices of history. But the original Henry Clark already passed all four, so you now possess the abilities of an Order Keeper.

“However, you can still attempt the trials again.

“I believe there must be a special reason why you were able to cross over into this world.”

Henry Clark nodded. “Yeah, I think so too!”

Judging from the current situation, it seemed he was playing the role of the Chosen One.

Maybe if he went through the trials, he’d come out and immediately enter the “Don’t Bully the Young and Poor” mode, then charge into the slices of history single-handedly and utterly destroy all those demons.

That’s how the script should go!

Thinking this, Henry Clark confidently stepped into the first trial.

Before entering, he specifically asked, “How much time do I have for the trials?”

Brian Clark replied, “The flow of time in the illusion is three times faster than in reality. In other words, seven days in reality equals twenty-one days in the trial world.”

Henry Clark was full of confidence. “That should be enough.”

Chapter 2: Packaged as a Game

A little over an hour later, Henry Clark walked out of the first trial illusion, deep in thought.

Brian Clark asked with concern, “How did it go?”

Actually, as the guide, she could have entered the trial illusion to observe, but to avoid putting too much pressure on Henry Clark and affecting his performance, she chose to wait outside.

Without a word, Henry Clark entered the second trial illusion.

Nearly two hours later, Henry Clark left the second trial illusion and turned to enter the third.

This time, it took less than half an hour before he left again and entered the fourth illusion.

After about another hour, Henry Clark finally emerged from the last trial illusion.

Brian Clark immediately approached, full of anticipation. “How did it go? Did you pass them all?”

By the time, Henry Clark had spent a long time in the four trial illusions. Five hours in reality, which equaled fifteen hours in the illusions.

The original host had already cleared them in that amount of time.

If Henry Clark really was as talented as previously guessed, he should have passed smoothly by now.

Henry Clark was silent for a long time, then asked in a tone full of existential doubt, “Are you sure these trials are even possible for humans to pass??

“Let alone passing all four—I couldn’t even get through one!

“In the first two trials, I had no idea what I was supposed to do. In the last two, I just died like a dog!”

Brian Clark frowned slightly. “How could you not know what you were supposed to do? You seem pretty normal intelligence-wise…”

Henry Clark’s mouth twitched. “Hey, some things are better left unsaid, you know!”

Brian Clark studied Henry Clark for a long time, then suddenly realized, “Could it be that you know nothing about this world’s history?”

Henry Clark was a bit surprised. “Does that affect passing the trials?”

Brian Clark sighed quietly. “Of course it does! Whether it’s the trial illusions or the slices of history, they’re all closely tied to history. If you know nothing about history, how could you possibly pass?

“As for the last two illusions… well, it seems you don’t have much talent for combat either.”
