Chapter 9

Brian Brooks slowly turned his head to look at Young Man: "A lama came from the south."

  Young Man: "???"

Brian Brooks turned and left, leaving only John Miller standing there in a daze: "A lama came from the south? What lama?"

Chapter 7, Serial Number 010101

At this moment, Emily Thompson, Olivia Harris, and Ethan Clark were in the reading area.

Olivia Harris was squatting playfully on a chair, barefoot, with his shoes scattered nearby.

Ethan Clark stood properly behind Emily Thompson, his gaze occasionally scanning the surroundings.

This Olivia Harris had delicate features and looked especially clever at first glance, while Ethan Clark was comparatively sturdier, with a more resolute look on his face.

One looked more like a page boy, the other more like a bodyguard.

Seeing that Emily Thompson had finished reading the news, Olivia Harris said, "Boss, that kid didn't help the other newcomers."

Emily Thompson nodded: "Not helping is normal. When he plays chess, he's decisive and ruthless—even willing to cut off his own arm to survive, let alone help others."

"Chess is just chess. If you tell me to sacrifice a piece on the board, I can do it too... So, boss, are you going to play chess with him again tomorrow?" Olivia Harris thought for a moment and asked.

"Of course," Emily Thompson smiled and said, "If I don't play with him, should I play with you two hopeless amateurs?" In the reading area, Emily Thompson was sitting beside a long wooden table, holding a brand-new e-reader and reading intently. On the screen were all sorts of news from this morning.

The huge cat was once again sprawled on the table, sleeping, as if the meaning of a cat's life was to sleep in different places.

This reading area was like a small library, but the "bookshelves" here held no paper books—only e-readers charging in their slots.

Emily Thompson looked at Ethan Clark and tapped the news on the e-reader with his finger: "Do you remember that Guo Huchan caught by the Chen Group? The trial process is over, and he should be transferred to this No. 18 prison in the next few days. When the time comes, get in touch with him."

Ethan Clark nodded: "I've dealt with him once before. He's not easy to get along with, but at least you can communicate with him."

"Mm," Emily Thompson nodded, then turned to Olivia Harris: "What do you think about that boy's breakdown this morning?"

"I've observed for a long time and something feels off," Olivia Harris analyzed. "It looked like the boy was rambling after breaking down, but when he mentioned Luocheng and the Yongli Group, he was very certain, as if it was all real."

  "His identity?" Emily Thompson asked.

"I checked. Outside, he's just a regular dropout, a drifter. He worked with the Black Tiger gang in City 18, dealing in mechanical prosthetics. He was suspected of illegally seizing prosthetics, but there was no evidence, so he was sent here for tax evasion. All his past life experiences can be traced, but as for Luocheng and the Yongli Group, there's really no information," Olivia Harris said.

No one had seen Olivia Harris check anything, but it seemed he only needed an hour to dig up everything about that broken-down boy.

That was the most amazing part.

Emily Thompson said, "Keep an eye on it. I think it might be related to something."

Just as Olivia Harris was about to say something else, Brian Brooks slowly walked over, carefully observing his surroundings.

Brian Brooks first glanced at Emily Thompson, then tried to gently pull an e-reader, shaped like a PAD, from the "bookshelf" and pressed the power button.

Brian Brooks stared at the screen.

If there was any way to quickly understand this world, it would definitely be by reading its books.

He hadn't expected that this world had even eliminated paper books, leaving only electronic devices.

However, after turning on the e-reader, it wasn't the operating interface that appeared, but a login screen.

Olivia Harris walked over: "First time in prison, right? If you want to use this e-reader, you have to register an account with your inmate number first."

Brian Brooks glanced at the number on his prison uniform: 010101.

After registering, Brian Brooks looked at Olivia Harris: "Where can I read the news, like the one in his hand?"

Olivia Harris glanced back at the e-reader in his boss's hand, then laughed: "Forget it. Your e-reader account doesn't have internet access. Even I don't have it."

Brian Brooks understood—Emily Thompson's status in this prison was truly extraordinary.

Just like how he could keep a cat in prison.

He said nothing more, thanked them, and lowered his head to read the contents on his own e-reader.

Olivia Harris returned to Emily Thompson's side, glancing at Brian Brooks from time to time.

But he suddenly noticed that Brian Brooks was flipping through the e-reader at an incredible speed!

Brian Brooks found a seat and sat down, constantly memorizing the contents of the e-reader and quickly flipping pages. He did this for more than three hours without even changing his sitting posture.

For others, reading might be a pastime, but for him, it was one of the ways to understand this world and survive.

The content on the e-reader was clearly carefully selected, with almost no important information—95% of it was philosophy and inspirational quotes...

But it didn't matter. Right now, any information was important to him.
