Chapter 13

Today is the last day of class. Everyone carried a mix of excitement and sadness. Olivia Harris also felt reluctant to let go of her junior high school life so soon. While she was chatting with her deskmate, the girl sitting behind her tapped her on the shoulder and handed her fifty cents along with a note.

The girl behind her gave her an ambiguous smile and pointed toward Eric Bennett's seat.

Olivia Harris took the note and the copy money that Eric Bennett was returning from yesterday, unfolded the note, and saw it read, "After school this afternoon, could you make a copy of the subject exercise sheets the teacher gave you yesterday? Thanks."

Olivia Harris crumpled up the note, turned her head, and looked at Eric Bennett in confusion. She hadn't expected that Eric Bennett had copied Ethan Foster's extremely difficult math exercises yesterday, and today he was asking her for the rest of the internal exercises for each subject. After dinner last night, she had tried working on those exercises herself, and it took her until midnight to finish sixty problems. Although her accuracy rate was ninety-five percent, if she wanted to go through all the exercises for every subject in the next two days to reinforce her knowledge, the holiday time would be just barely enough—of course, not counting her time for relaxation and rest.

She didn't think Eric Bennett could do the same as her.

Besides, what he should be focusing on now was the basics. For Eric Bennett, the two days off before the high school entrance exam would be better spent on reviewing the fundamentals rather than tackling these high-difficulty exercises. That would actually help him more. After all, no one has ever heard of a bird trying to fly before it even learns how to stand.

Although she was full of doubts, Olivia Harris still nodded to Eric Bennett. She was the class monitor, always just and aloof, and didn't like passing notes or these little gestures. Moreover, since starting school, Olivia Harris had never passed notes with any boy, and being so attentive to such details, she certainly wouldn't make an exception for Eric Bennett.

Eric Bennett, on the other hand, didn't care about these things. Seeing little Olivia Harris nod, he felt reassured.

The homeroom teacher for junior high walked into the classroom, gave some reminders, and then began his final review to fill in the gaps in their math knowledge.

The homeroom teacher matched his memory almost exactly, because in the days to come, after leaving high school, Eric Bennett hardly ever saw his junior high teachers again. The impression they left in his mind back then was more or less the same as it was now.

During the break, Ethan Foster, who had been dissatisfied since seeing Eric Bennett pass a note to Olivia Harris that morning, came up to Eric Bennett with a mocking look. "Hey, how did you do on the exercises I gave you yesterday? Didn't get many right, did you? Or did you not even look at them?"

Eric Bennett directly ignored his sarcasm. "By the way, I did those problems, but there weren't any correct answers to check against. Can you show me the answers so I can see if I got them right?"

Ethan Foster's lips twitched. "You did them!?..." Then he continued easily, "Or did you just do part of them... Fine, the answers are in my bag. Let's see how much you accomplished after a whole night of studying."

Ethan Foster deliberately raised his voice so that some people on the balcony could hear clearly. He intended to mock Eric Bennett, and now many others were interested too, unconsciously following Eric Bennett and Ethan Foster back into the classroom. Ethan Foster was quite straightforward, quickly finding the answer key for the internal exercises from his bag, and excitedly slapped it onto the desk in front of Eric Bennett. "Come on, let's check the answers. I want to see which problems you did. Maybe I can even give you some study tips!"

The sisters William Clark and Linda Clark, who already knew what the two had done yesterday, came over as well. They also wanted to see how many of the super-challenging internal exercises, which the teacher only gave to top students and which had no answer key, Eric Bennett could actually solve. They figured they could probably count them on their fingers.

Ethan Foster looked smugly at Eric Bennett as he took out the test paper and unfolded it. The page was densely covered with blue pen writing, like a tide sweeping over the entire mimeographed sheet.

A hundred problems... all solved!

There were already people around whispering in surprise. The sisters Linda Clark and William Clark were both stunned.

Ethan Foster was a bit embarrassed. He had also worked on this set of problems last night, getting stuck at problems ten, twenty, thirty-three, and forty-five, each to varying degrees, and spent a lot of time on them. In the end, it was one in the morning when he finished fifty-eight problems, checked the answers, corrected a few mistakes, and then went to bed.

Who would have thought that after just a few hours of sleep, during this break, he would see that Eric Bennett had solved all the problems on the test!?

"Impossible..." Spreading out the test paper, Ethan Foster gave Eric Bennett an awkward smile. "You just scribbled randomly, didn't you... Let's check the answers and see..."

As they went through the answers, Ethan Foster's expression changed bit by bit. Only Eric Bennett, sitting next to him, watched and occasionally commented, "Oh, this one is wrong... Oh, another one is wrong..."

"That's the third one already..." When he said this, Eric Bennett sounded a bit disappointed. At this point in the checking, they had already reached the ninetieth problem.
