Chapter 1: Night of Terror (1)

Two-faced considered driving a taxi as going straight; in the past, he was a "rascal." The two ink dragons tattooed on his body had several breaks—not because the tattoo artist lacked skill, but because later someone hacked at him with a kitchen knife and a machete. At the time, the wounds bled profusely, the flesh flipping outward like two gaping lips—truly a gruesome sight.

After he recovered, the dragons were broken, and Two-faced switched careers to become a taxi driver, a job he has done for over a decade.

Most drivers who work the night shift like to keep their hair long and wear floral shirts to intimidate petty thugs, but Two-faced had seen enough big scenes involving knives to command respect without anger. No matter what kind of passenger he picked up, he was never fazed. Since he started driving a taxi, the strange and bizarre things he’s encountered could fill a whole trunk if printed out—like beautiful women hailing a cab naked in the middle of the night, burly men getting in with handcuffs on, or 15-year-old girls trying to rob him with nothing but a shoelace around his neck... Truly all sorts of things. Over time, Two-faced became unfazed by the strange and remained calm in the face of change. But the bizarre incident he encountered that night in Shanxi still makes his hair stand on end and his body break out in cold sweat whenever he thinks about it.

In the winter of 2009, while Two-faced was sweeping the streets for fares, he picked up a passenger. The man had graying hair, was in his forties, and spoke with a Shanxi accent, saying he wanted to go to Linfen, Shanxi.

Two-faced was startled—this was a one-way trip of 1,000 kilometers. In all his years of driving a taxi, he had never come across such a big job.

While Two-faced was still figuring out how to bring up the fare, the man straightforwardly said, "We only need a one-way trip. All your expenses for the return journey are on us. We'll give you 3,500 yuan in total, including tolls and everything. Does that work for you?"

Two-faced's head heated up as he calculated—his daily net profit was only a few dozen yuan. In just a day or two, he could make nearly two thousand yuan. That was no small sum!

But then he thought, could this be a trap? How could there be such a good deal?

The man seemed to see through Two-faced's thoughts and handed him a piece of paper and a plastic card. Two-faced saw that the plastic card was an ID card—it was the man in front of him. The piece of paper was a photocopy of the ID.
