Chapter 10

“Maybe magic isn’t necessarily suitable for you.” Old King said, “Anyway, you’ll have a long lifespan, so you can take your time and choose another path.”

“May I ask, with my talent, how long would it take to learn magic to the point where I can understand languages as effortlessly as you?”

“Hmm?” Old King looked him over carefully. “About ten thousand years, give or take, but in reality it might be shorter. I can’t be sure when you’ll encounter something that could change your own conditions.”

“How long did it take you?”

“Me? When I was learning magic, this spell didn’t even exist in the world, so there’s no reference point.” Old King shook his head, a mysterious smile on his face. “But if we take a mage in our world who can pass the mage’s exam, starting from scratch, it would take about five or six years to reach the level where they can use this spell.”

“……”

William Clark was deeply struck.

“By the way!” William Clark suddenly remembered something, his eyes fixed eagerly on Old King. “Master Mage, since your world is a magical civilization… is there a spell that can bring people back to life?”

“Bring people back to life?” Mr. King looked at him, squinting. “No wonder your aura is so gloomy. Did you recently lose a loved one?”

“Yes, my parents just died in an accident.”

“I’m very sorry.” Old King lowered his head, then continued, “We have many medical techniques that can revive someone who has recently died in an accident, provided the body isn’t too badly damaged. Although we currently lack the necessary medical equipment, I’d still be happy to give it a try. I wonder about your parents…”

William Clark’s face suddenly turned very grim. “But what if they’ve already been cremated?”

“Then there’s nothing that can be done.” Old King said flatly.

“Aren’t you… a mysterious civilization? Isn’t there any other way?” William Clark was still unwilling to give up.

“Necromancy for ordinary humans has fatal flaws, and its private use is strictly prohibited by international law.” Old King seemed to see through his thoughts and spoke directly. After a pause, he added, “Besides, the rules of the world are different. In your world, the soul may dissipate even faster than the body decays, so unfortunately, the knowledge and abilities I possess are not enough to help you.”

William Clark was greatly disappointed, but fortunately, he had already gradually come to accept this fact over the past few days.

“Is there any other way?”

“I can’t give you a definite answer to that. There are infinite possibilities in the world, and a person can only master limited knowledge in a lifetime.” Old King said calmly. “The body is the vessel of life, the soul is the backup of the body, and together they record a life. We once thought they couldn’t be copied or replaced, but the rapid development of the times later proved it was just that our technology wasn’t advanced enough. Now we’ve proven that the body can nurture a soul anew, and the soul can reshape the body. But no one knows if this world has another way of recording every life that passes through it, one that we don’t know about.”

William Clark didn’t fully understand, but he got the general idea.

Old King glanced at him, smiled, and said no more, instead turning to look over the hotel’s facade.

“Judging by the decor of this building, it seems to be an inn?” He changed the subject.

“Yes, it’s the inn my parents ran when they were alive.”

“Hmm.” Old King nodded. “That’s quite convenient.”

“Uh…”

“I’d like to go out and get to know your world a bit. Do you think that’s okay?” Old King looked at him for approval.

“I couldn’t stop you even if I wanted to.” William Clark spread his hands helplessly.

“But you should learn to stop me.” Old King became serious, as if playing the role of a mentor. “In the future, many people who cross over won’t be so simple. If you can’t learn to control them, they’ll cause trouble.”

“Alright!” William Clark nodded seriously. “Then, as the stationmaster of the space-time transfer station, I forbid you from leaving here.”

Old King stood where he was, looking at him helplessly.

“Fine, at least change your clothes before you go out.” William Clark said. “The clothes you’re wearing now are really a bit strange, and… you look too much like a beggar.”

“Do you have any spare clothes here?”

“No.” William Clark was taken aback. “I have some at home. I’ll bring them for you tomorrow.”

“Then I’ll go upstairs and have a look first, is that alright?”

“Go ahead.”

“Alright.”

Old King turned and walked upstairs.

William Clark sat behind the counter, saw that it was already past eleven, and opened QQ to send a message to Emily Clark, telling her he wouldn’t be going home tonight.

Only then did he remember that the rooftop was locked.

But that probably wouldn’t be a problem for Old King, right?

“To travel here from another world, what an incredible feat!” William Clark was still amazed.

It was beyond his comprehension, but he was adapting to his own situation quite quickly.

On the rooftop.

Old King easily opened the plum blossom lock on the iron gate to the rooftop, completely at ease, then stood at the edge of the terrace, gazing into the distance.
