Chapter 20

William Carter knocked on the table, and a fountain pen bounced into the air. He caught it single-handedly and spun it twice, just like a juggler. The move was so dashing, and his expression so roguish, that he absolutely had the flair of Stephen Chow in "The Mad Monk."

Professor Bolton was stunned by this dice-shaking opening move. By the time Old Bolton snapped out of it, he saw that William Carter was already writing furiously, filling in more than ten fill-in-the-blank questions. His pen swept across the paper like a typewriter, leaving correct answers in its wake... Professor Bolton could only return to the podium in frustration and take a sip of tea to calm himself down. He hadn't even swallowed his tea when he saw Alice Carter's test paper on the desk. He started flipping through it while drinking, only to choke so badly he nearly went to meet Marx.

With twenty minutes left before the end of the exam, Lillian Ford was the second in the class to hand in her paper. Professor Bolton stopped her and asked, "Student, when was this first paper handed in?" Lillian Ford found the question a bit odd, but still answered politely, "It should have been a little over an hour after the exam started. Didn't you talk to him at that time?"

Professor Bolton scratched his head and said "Oh," then lowered his voice and asked, "Do you know the boy sitting next to you?"

Lillian Ford shivered at the question: "I... I don't know him..." She finished and hurried out of the classroom as if fleeing. So, watching her back, Professor Bolton was basically convinced that William Carter was a scoundrel.

Lillian Ford had just reached the doorway when she heard a "slap" from the podium behind her. She turned to look and saw that William Carter had handed in his paper! This stalker had been sleeping at the start of the exam, and after waking up, took less than an hour to finish! At this moment, a terrifying thought occurred to Lillian Ford: this stalker wasn't here for the exam at all—he was here to follow me! Now that I'm leaving, he has no reason to stay.

At this moment, William Carter was feeling triumphant and extremely pleased with himself. In fact, it didn't take three hours to fill out these papers—at least, not if you skipped the "thinking" part. With Alice Carter's answers as a base, he just changed the wording for the essay questions, threw in some other people's theories, and finished the paper in a flash. Of course, as soon as he finished, he basically forgot everything. If he had to do it again now, it would probably be a blank sheet...

So for William Carter, there was no need to check the paper at all—it would just be a waste of life. He slapped the folder onto Old Bolton's desk and left, making Old Bolton so angry his mustache bristled. William Carter walked out of the classroom and saw Lillian Ford fleeing not far ahead. He suddenly called out to her, "Lillian Ford, wait up, I have something to say to you."

Lillian Ford froze, as if making a huge decision. Maybe it was out of fear, but she did stop.

"You... how do you know my name?" She seemed afraid to speak loudly, looking timidly at William Carter, her voice trembling a little.

She stood at the end of the corridor, sunlight falling on her shoulders. She looked down, tugging at the corner of her clothes, her cheeks flushed, breathing heavily, her chest rising and falling. She looked just like a shy fairy, making one's heart race. This scene was etched deeply into William Carter's memory, remaining vivid even many years later.

William Carter walked toward her step by step, making Lillian Ford even more nervous. This stalker even knew her name, which made her even more afraid.

"I just have a few words, then I'll leave." William Carter stopped less than a meter in front of her, looking into Lillian Ford's eyes, while she buried her face even deeper. If a third person saw this scene, they would be two hundred percent sure this boy was about to make a heartfelt confession.

But William Carter said, "First, I'm not a stalker. During the exam, I saw you wanted to cheat, but that's a small matter, no need to fuss over it now. Second, while you are worth being followed, you have too many bodyguards, it's too difficult to make a move, not everyone dares to follow you. So I hope you won't wrongly accuse a good person next time. Lastly, let me give you a little inside info as a small gift to clear up our misunderstanding: you did well on this exam, you ranked second in the class."

With that, he strode off, leaving the beauty standing there in a daze for a long while.

When Lillian Ford returned outside the school, she was still thinking about William Carter's words. Her bodyguard Ethan Brooks noticed her odd expression and came up to ask, "Miss, what's wrong? I just saw that kid who was following you a week ago pass by here. Did he bully you? If he dares touch a hair on your head, Uncle Brooks will break his bones for you!" Ethan Brooks was a retired soldier who had served with Lillian Ford's father. His own daughter was studying abroad, so he always treated this young lady as his other daughter and couldn't bear to see her suffer any grievance.

"It's not that... Last time, it was probably really a misunderstanding. He isn't a stalker, it's just that..." Lillian Ford paused here, "Forget it, Uncle Brooks, just drive. I'm hungry, let's go eat somewhere first."
