Chapter 2

“Last night, two hundred people from He Ji and Xin Ji had a massive street fight, with casualties everywhere. There weren’t enough beds at Kowloon Hospital, and you still have the mood to eat fruit here?” David Brooks’s pupils contracted, his gaze wolf-like. He grabbed Robert Bolton by the collar, stared him down, and gritted his teeth: “Do you believe I’ll drag you back right now?”

“Have you sentenced to life imprisonment on the spot!”

“Oh, Mr. Brooks, I’m so scared.” Robert Bolton’s expression was calm, his gaze at him lonely and fierce.

He was clearly trying to act aggrieved and sarcastic, but couldn’t even fake a bit of grievance. Not even pretending anymore wasn’t sarcasm—it was blatant provocation!

“If you have enough evidence to arrest me, I’ll plead guilty in court and get two years off my sentence. If you don’t have enough evidence, then please let go, or I’ll have to file a complaint against you with the Public Relations Department.”

“O Division’s Mr. Brooks…” Robert Bolton flicked the badge on his chest, his eyes full of mischief. The two were old acquaintances.

“Hmph.” Mr. Brooks let go and asked, “Where were you at 2 a.m. last night?”

“Playing mahjong at the fruit market.”

“Who can vouch for you?”

“You can ask Uncle William.” Robert Bolton glanced over, and David Brooks looked as well: “Will! Don’t play dumb!”

“Sir, I really did play mahjong all night with Ben last night. If you don’t believe me, ask Lijun and Xiaomei from the sauna upstairs.”

“Someone saw you at the Glorious Nightclub yesterday, fighting in a bloody brawl!” David Brooks turned back. “How do you explain that?”

“No way, Sir… I’m a law-abiding citizen, you say I was in a brawl and that’s it? The Hong Kong Island police are all about discipline and the rule of law! You need evidence!”

“What Glorious Nightclub? I was playing mahjong all night, only saw the news in the morning about the fight. Those punks are hopeless, you really should catch them! If you can’t, that’s your problem!”

“Oh right, Mr. Brooks, the TVB morning news said someone already turned themselves in, right?” Robert Bolton bit down on a cigarette. He was 1.76 meters tall, with well-defined features, a refined face, and a broad forehead. His eyes were peach-shaped, with deep corners, perfectly round inner corners, slightly upturned, the whites and blacks sharply contrasted, and very prominent eye bags. His gaze was rich and dreamy, as if starlight sparkled within, filled with the world’s most beautiful emotions.

That cigarette added a touch of wildness to his elegance. His eyes could kill.

Chapter 002 Brothers

“Ben!”

“It’s not like you can just find two lackeys to take the fall and come out squeaky clean.”

“Black is black, white is white. Getting others to take the blame for what you did—do you have the guts?” Mr. Brooks’s face suddenly twisted, his tone laced with threat, even goading.

But Robert Bolton raised both hands, acting honestly, and said, “If you have evidence, go ahead and throw me in the cell.”

“I have a lawyer!”

“Damn!” David Brooks spat out a curse and immediately waved his hand: “Take him away!”

“Today we’re sending Prince Bin to the station for a little polish, let Prince Ben get his credentials before becoming a Red Pole.”

“Yes, Mr. Brooks.” A police officer’s eyes were sharp as he reached for the handcuffs and snapped them onto Robert Bolton’s wrists.

As he locked the cuffs, he kept a close eye on Brother Ben, afraid Prince Ben might suddenly lash out.

On the other side, William from the market was also firmly held by the police.

“Prince Ben said it!”

“He’s good-looking, no need for a hood!” David Brooks shouted.

“Mr. Brooks, isn’t that a bit against the rules…” Robert Bolton smiled faintly, speaking coldly.

At this moment, He Ji’s special counsel, the triad’s legal advisor, Edward Carter, dressed in a black suit and blue tie, strode into the fruit market shop entrance, blocking David Brooks’s way in one step. He swept his gaze around the scene, raised his hand to offer a business card, and spoke slowly and methodically: “Hello, Senior Inspector David Brooks of O Division, I am the legal advisor for He Yi Hai Company.”

“I am the special counsel for Mr. Robert Bolton in front of you, Edward Carter.”

Edward Carter had fair skin.

His beard was clean-shaven.

He had the depth and demeanor of a cultured man.

David Brooks turned to see Edward Carter, but looked at him with disgust and said coldly, “Edward Carter, practicing lawyer, I know. One of the Four Heavenly Kings under Prince Ben, Lawyer Clark…”

“Just because the boss told you to go back to school, you got into HKU in a year. What, now you’ve graduated and come back?”

“Specializing in defending the triad, huh? Hahahaha.”

“Inspector Brooks.” Edward Carter put the business card back in his suit pocket, his tone crisp and logical as he retorted, “Regarding your previous remarks, I reserve the right to pursue a defamation case against you. As for my client, Mr. Robert Bolton, he has not broken the law, and you have no evidence, so you have no right to cuff and take him away.”

Since David Brooks didn’t accept his card, he wouldn’t insist. Anyway, he’d have plenty of chances to deal with David Brooks. As for defending the triad?

He was just doing his job for his client.

Screw your nonsense.

Then, David Brooks’s gaze skipped past Edward Carter to the other two, slapped his forehead, and laughed: “Lawyer Clark, Big Howard, Ethan Foster from Dongguan, three of the Four Heavenly Kings under Prince Ben are here.”

“How come there are only three?”

“Oh! I almost forgot, yesterday the ‘Blow-the-Whistle Scholar’ got hacked to death!”
