Chapter 1

A vast land under the rule of kings!

This is an era of surging winds and clouds, destined to forge heroes and legends.

Who says there are no heroes in officialdom? Who says there are no outstanding figures on the path of government service?

A man whose very bones flow with the blood of heroism is destined to stir up a storm in the world of bureaucracy, where blending in is the norm.

  Live boldly, serve boldly!

If he suddenly becomes low-key, don’t doubt it—that just means he’s preparing to hunt the tiger.

Look for the signature of “meat pie”—hot-blooded officialdom! Passion surging!

Give me a click, and I’ll return you a legend!

Chapter 1: A Troubled Autumn

In early October 1986, on the asphalt road from Yanhua City to Hongzhou, the capital of Qingshan Province, an old military jeep was struggling forward, bouncing as if dancing on the pothole-ridden road.

Henry Foster sat in the jeep, lost in thought.

Henry Foster was handsome, with a sharply contoured face, thick eyebrows, big eyes, a straight nose, and a faint blue fuzz above his lips. Though still young, he already exuded a masculine vigor unique to real men. Tall and broad-shouldered, if not for the lingering traces of youthful innocence on his face, anyone seeing him for the first time would surely exclaim from the heart—what a man!

But right now, this “good man” looked as if he’d suffered a tremendous shock, his expression quite unlike that of an ordinary person.

Staring at the familiar yet unfamiliar scenery outside the window, Henry Foster’s mind was in chaos.

It seemed as if he had come back...

  Or rather, been reborn!

Henry Foster clearly remembered that just a moment ago, he was in a KTV private room in Yuyang County, catching a few suspects. How did he suddenly end up in a jeep? And not just any jeep, but this old canvas-topped military one!

  Henry Foster’s eyes involuntarily narrowed.

He was a heavy smoker. Whether reading, watching TV, writing reports, or interrogating suspects, he liked to light a cigarette. Over time, he developed the habit of squinting his eyes. Some suspects were especially afraid when he squinted, saying there was a “fierce light” in his eyes. As soon as he squinted, their hearts would tremble with fear.

Officer Foster was never known for being soft-hearted.

But as an old hand in the Criminal Investigation Team of Yuyang County Public Security Bureau in Yanhua City, Qingshan Province, Officer Foster never expected that catching a few suspects would somehow send him back more than twenty years.

Henry Foster was now full of doubts.

  No way, right?

What kind of joke is this!

Henry Foster’s hobbies were actually rather “cultured.” Though he was a tough guy and had done mostly hard-man work for over twenty years, in his spare time, he liked to go online and read books.

He read all kinds of books.

He remembered that in recent years, “rebirth” novels were popular online.

Henry Foster would read, laugh, smoke, and curse, “What a load of crap!”

If there really was such a thing as rebirth, he wouldn’t have spent his whole life as a lowly cop.

That was just his personality—stubborn and abrasive. He’d offend people whether he should or not. After graduating from college, he was originally assigned to work in the Yanhua Prefectural Committee office, but before long, he was kicked to the regional public security office, and then again to the Yuyang County Public Security Bureau—back to his hometown, in the end.

If he really could do it all over again, at least those people he truly shouldn’t have offended, Henry Foster wouldn’t offend.

He never expected that a fierce fight with those suspects would actually lead to something.

Those guys were desperate, and Henry Foster was getting older. In a chaotic place like a KTV, he didn’t dare use his gun, so he fought barehanded. In the melee, he took a heavy blow...

Could he have become a martyr?

At this thought, Henry Foster couldn’t help but lift his wrist and roll up his sleeve.

  Sure enough!

His arm was muscular, the skin supple and glossy, dotted with faint blue fuzz.

  He really was back.

  What a load of crap!

Henry Foster cursed again in his heart, feeling utterly lost for a moment. For such a bizarre thing to actually happen to him—he thought fate was really toying with him.

Although Henry Foster had read plenty of rebirth novels, he’d never imagined that one day he would actually be reborn.

  He wasn’t prepared at all!

Thinking of this, Henry Foster couldn’t help but find it funny.

  Prepared? Yeah, right!

Henry Foster was tough and unyielding, never bending, even past fifty. Sometimes he was as impulsive as a teenager. He’d made plenty of mistakes in his life, but rarely regretted them, so he’d never fantasized about being reborn.

Now, fate had actually let him be reborn, sent him back more than twenty years.

Could there be anything stranger or more maddening than this?

"Xiao Fan, what are you thinking about? Here, have a cigarette!"

Henry Foster was lost in wild thoughts when a middle-aged man in the passenger seat turned and smiled, handing him a cigarette.

  "Ah, thanks, Director Miller."
