Chapter 18

This exceptionally handsome young man was actually quite polite, and didn’t mind that William Foster’s rank was lower than his. He directly referred to himself as the junior, which made it easy for people to feel goodwill toward him.

After a few polite exchanges, William Foster finally learned that Andrew Cooper was a constable at the town’s police station, and was highly valued by the supervisor Thomas Wright. So, despite his young age, his status in the police station was not low at all.

This time, when David Thompson sent someone back for help and explained the situation, Thomas Wright thought it was quite urgent. Since he couldn’t spare anyone at the moment, he had Andrew Cooper rush over first to assess the situation and make preparations. As soon as the police station could arrange it, more people would be sent to support them.

No one expected that this group would attack Shili Pavilion that very night, burning it half to the ground. Many of the constables and officers stationed there were killed, leaving only David Thompson, William Foster, and Ethan Brooks, who happened to be away at the time.

If Andrew Cooper hadn’t come straight over without resting and managed to save David Thompson just in time, it’s likely that David Thompson would have perished there as well.

“It’s just a pity we couldn’t capture that Peter Scott!”

After a quick cleanup, the group lit the lamps in the council hall and sat down to talk.

It was only then that William Foster learned that Peter Scott hadn’t died, but had escaped with his life at the cost of a ruined arm. However, with one arm crippled, he probably wouldn’t be able to use his famous twin blades ever again.

“Today’s events are extremely strange. These lone bandits gathering together is odd enough, but then suddenly attacking Shili Pavilion—could there be some conspiracy?”

After recounting the whole story, Andrew Cooper felt that something was very wrong. In fact, it wasn’t just him; David Thompson also sensed that there was something strange about the whole affair, as if something big was about to happen.

“No matter what, we have to get to the bottom of this. The simplest way right now is to catch that Peter Scott!” David Thompson gritted his teeth, clutching his chest and gasping for breath. “That bastard lost an arm, so he’ll definitely need to find a place to recover—he can’t have gone far! Plus, their accomplices are still nearby. Once we catch them, we’ll know what tricks they’re up to!”

As soon as he finished speaking, David Thompson suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood. It seemed he’d suffered internal injuries during his fight with Peter Scott.

Seeing David Thompson like this, Andrew Cooper frowned. “George Thompson is seriously injured. You should return to Baihe Town to recover first! As for capturing Peter Scott… as long as we report everything in detail, I’m sure Supervisor Wright will make proper arrangements!”

David Thompson knew he couldn’t afford to delay treatment, so he nodded. “At dawn, I’ll return to Baihe Town with Andrew! With Shili Pavilion in this state, we can’t stay here anyway.” He glanced at William Foster. “It’s just right for William Foster to come too. If you’re to be promoted to a full constable, it’s best to go to the town police station!”

Of course, William Foster had no objections, so the group said no more, sitting there with their eyes closed to rest. Since they didn’t know if those people would come back for another attack, no one dared to sleep. They just made do as best they could. Fortunately, after all the commotion, dawn was almost here, so they just had to hold out a little longer.

When morning came, they tidied up briefly and headed straight for Baihe Town.

Baihe Town was located in the western part of Zhuzhou. It wasn’t a big town, nor was it a transportation hub or known for any special products, so it was a rather unremarkable place.

The distance from Shili Pavilion to Baihe Town wasn’t short, and with injured people among them, it took them from early morning until nightfall to finally reach the town—this was only possible because Baihe Town wasn’t on the border or a military stronghold, so the curfew wasn’t strictly enforced, and the group were all constables. Otherwise, they would have had to spend the night outside the city.

After entering the town, David Thompson and Andrew Cooper went straight to the police station to report the details, while William Foster was assigned a bedroom to rest. As for how his contributions would be described and whether he would be promoted to a full constable, William Foster had no say in these matters and could only wait in the room.

“Sigh, with such a low status, I don’t even have the right to speak!”

Having been in this world for over a month, nothing had left as deep an impression on him as these past two days.

The difference in treatment between high and low status was like night and day. As soon as they arrived at the police station, everyone rushed to greet Andrew Cooper, while he himself was ignored by all, and even ordered to do trivial chores—this made it all too clear.

Because of this, after his room was arranged, William Foster obediently stayed inside, not daring to go out for fear of running into some troublemaker.

At the same time, he prepared to enter the system and practice his Wild Ball Fist again. In these two life-and-death battles, it was thanks to this Wild Ball Fist that he managed to survive. As his only reliable skill at the moment, he naturally valued it greatly.

He was just about to reach for the iron token hidden deep inside when he heard Andrew Cooper knocking on his door. “Brother Foster, are you asleep?”

He got up and opened the door to see Andrew Cooper smiling and holding a tray, on which lay a waist saber and an iron token. William Foster immediately knew why Andrew Cooper had come. “No, come in, Brother Cooper!”

Sure enough, as soon as he entered, Andrew Cooper handed the items to William Foster. “George Thompson has already told Supervisor Wright about your achievements, and Supervisor Wright was very pleased to hear that Baihe Town has produced another outstanding young man. He immediately promoted you to a full constable! Here are your badge and weapon. Of course, if the weapon doesn’t suit you, I’ll accompany you to the armory tomorrow to pick another one!”
