Chapter 14

“No, it’s alright.”

Although he hadn’t played Diablo to the level of a hardcore player, he still understood the general background. In an environment where you could be killed by an increasing number of dark creatures at any time and place, being extra cautious was never too much.

“So, young man, may I ask where you come from? Where are you headed? And why did you use a teleportation array to arrive at our camp?”

With Agatha’s help, Katherine confirmed that there was no demonic aura on the young man before her. Still, she maintained her usual caution and asked these questions through Agatha’s translation.

“I come from a faraway place. There was a little accident while I was using magical teleportation. As for arriving at your camp, it was probably just a coincidence.”

“Teleportation?” Katherine turned to look at Agatha beside her. “So you’re a mage?”

While relaying the message, Agatha frowned, because she didn’t sense any magical energy fluctuations from Ethan. However, this young man could skillfully use mental power to communicate with her, which proved he had at least received some training in mental manipulation.

“Uh… I haven’t started formal training yet, I’ve just learned some basic knowledge.”

Agatha nodded. This matched her own judgment, and she shared her reasoning with Katherine.

Upon hearing this, Katherine realized that the thin young man in front of her wasn’t even an apprentice mage—just a rookie who had only recently come into contact with mysterious powers. But that made another question stand out.

“If you’ve only just started, how did you manage to cast such a high-level spell as teleportation?”

“A scroll!” During this time, Ethan had also been perfecting his ‘lie’ in his mind, and he happened to know of an item that fit this world’s setting. “I was planning to use a teleportation scroll, but something seemed to go wrong during the process.”

Besides translating, Agatha, who had been checking something all along, also nodded to Katherine. “All the connected teleportation arrays are still shut down and unusable. It’s likely that this young man’s use of a teleportation scroll happened to connect to our camp, briefly activating the teleportation array and bringing him here.”

Agatha pinched the bridge of her nose. “There are still many unknowns about mysterious magical energies, and problems can easily occur. This is indeed possible.”

Katherine got the answer she wanted and, letting go of her guard against Ethan, even arranged a separate tent for him to rest in.

There was no surveillance, and they even provided some food and hot water. This was thanks to the fact that the enemies in this world were all demonic creatures or beings mutated by the invasion of dark forces. Since Ethan had no dark energy fluctuations and was a pure human, he was naturally on the same side. As long as a few questions were answered, he wouldn’t be treated as an enemy.

After chatting with Agatha for a while, Ethan gradually realized that although this world was based on a game, there were still huge differences from the game.

There was no storage space—the backpack was just a backpack, and you couldn’t conveniently put things into some kind of space. If you wanted to carry more, you’d have to make your body stronger.

Potions did exist, but they weren’t as magical as in the game, where you could bounce back to life after being gravely injured. Red potions could speed up recovery from injuries, usually used both internally and externally. As for blue potions, he hadn’t seen any yet.

There were also no class choices—the classes in the game were actually different sects or factions here. If Ethan wanted to become a paladin or a mage, he’d have to join the corresponding faction, pass strict tests, and then undergo rigorous training before he could become a qualified paladin or mage.

That was obviously impossible! Ethan’s visit to the Diablo world this time, though longer than last time, was still only a month.

In a month, to pass the tests, gain entry, and then earn enough favor to receive proper training… Ethan decided he might as well just go to sleep. Even if he really was the chosen one, it would be impossible—just traveling from the Rogue Encampment to those places would take more than a month.

“With limited time, what can I actually gain in this world?”

Just food and water? Maybe he could get a small amount, but looking at the Rogue Encampment, where most people had to take turns sharing a tent, it was unrealistic to take away large amounts of food and water—unless he had something to trade or this world’s currency.

What’s more, the power level in the Diablo world was quite high. If he didn’t learn something and just took some food back, it would be a waste of the time-space energy that gave him a whole month here.

“I need to plan carefully. In a month, I must at least gain some ability to protect myself… I don’t expect to be able to instantly kill Andariel, but I must be able to defend myself against ordinary people.”

He hadn’t forgotten that the world he’d return to was also full of danger.

“So, learning combat skills is the top priority… Physical fitness can’t be improved much in a short time, but I can at least learn the basics and keep training after I go back.”
