Chapter 2

“No, I originally planned for an observation period of one to two years. I started paying attention to you last month—this is the second month. I only approached you early because I knew you were facing some serious trouble.” Old Butler explained unhurriedly.

Henry Clark didn’t know if this was true or not, so he asked about the great-aunt he had never met.

Old Butler gave a brief explanation.

Henry Clark learned that the great-aunt had gone abroad very early, had children, and mainly developed her career overseas, though she also had businesses in China. When her assets were divided, a portion was left to Henry Clark. After her passing, she was also buried abroad, so if Henry Clark wanted to pay respects, he’d have to go overseas.

That was all there was to it.

Old Butler was unwilling to say more.

“I want to know, the Feng family is such a big clan, and in my generation there are so many siblings here in China—why was I chosen?” Henry Clark asked.

Old Butler looked at him with a smile, as if looking at a kitten just picked up from the roadside: “Ms. Feng said your looks are the most likable.”

Henry Clark touched his own sharp chin.

“She really has great taste!”

In all his years, this was the first time an elder had said he looked likable!

He’d heard plenty of comments about him looking “unreliable and unlucky in love,” so to suddenly be praised as “likable” was quite a surprise.

Henry Clark also thought he was handsome. There were plenty of celebrities in the entertainment industry with sharp chins, many even sharper than his, but elders seemed to prefer the traditional “lucky face,” or faces that looked more steady and righteous.

But…

Who cares what kind of face I have—as long as I’m handsome, that’s all that matters!

Henry Clark wasn’t entirely narcissistic.

In his freshman year, he went to a hair salon for a haircut, and the manager personally invited him to collaborate. At school, he often received invitations to various club events.

In his sophomore year, he expanded his collaborations to earn tuition and money for a house—hair salons, photo studios, clothing and accessory shops, even the largest hotpot restaurant on the commercial street outside campus hired him for billboard ads.

In the second semester of his junior year, he partnered with others to open a small studio, no longer working solo, and finally saved enough to own his first home. Among ordinary students his age, he was already a winner in life.

In his senior year, he was lucky enough to squeeze into a web drama crew, playing a minor “snake spirit” role. Unexpectedly, things got even better! The web drama aired at the start of the year and became a hit, and he gained some online presence thanks to that role, finally getting a foothold in the entertainment industry.

Everything was going well, his career was on the rise, and he was planning to ride the momentum to make some money in showbiz—only to be stabbed in the back at a critical moment. His partner caused a series of incidents and then ran off with the money.

Henry Clark was left to face furious business partners, huge breach-of-contract penalties, and all sorts of compensation claims alone.

So, his current situation was being buried in debt—he really needed this money.

If he weren’t in such dire straits, even if a hundred million was placed in front of him, he’d think twice. His experiences had taught him not to be too naive; if you’re not strong enough, even a pie falling from the sky could kill you.

The most likable face? So that’s why he was left a fortune?

Who are you kidding!

A hundred million—there must be a huge pit waiting for him behind this!

Yet, even knowing there was a pit, he still had to step in.

No matter how much he complained inside, Henry Clark just smiled on the surface and continued to ask, “Where is the Feng family ancestral home? Is it that century-old mansion in Yangcheng?”

Old Butler chuckled lightly, as if dismissing the so-called century-old mansion in Henry Clark’s words.

“The outskirts of Yangcheng, Xiaofeng Mountain.”

Henry Clark thought to himself: Sure enough, never heard of it.

He was born and raised in Yangcheng, only leaving for Rongcheng for university after the college entrance exam and breaking away from the Feng family—he’d never gone back. Xiaofeng Mountain sounded vaguely familiar, but not much.

But this was the first time he’d heard of the Feng family ancestral home on Xiaofeng Mountain.

Right in front of Old Butler, Henry Clark took out his phone, searched for information about Xiaofeng Mountain in Yangcheng, and fell silent.

He knew it wouldn’t be easy, but he didn’t expect the challenge to be this tough.

Xiaofeng Mountain was also called Snake Mountain by locals, because there were a lot of snakes there.

Just looking at the pictures online gave him goosebumps.

Henry Clark really hated snakes, but to get through this crisis, what were snakes, anyway?

Besides, most of the snakes on Xiaofeng Mountain were harmless grass snakes, and the mountain was cordoned off.

“Is there someone guarding the ancestral home?” Henry Clark asked.

The old man seemed quite satisfied with Henry Clark’s reaction, his smile widening slightly. “Of course, someone has to take care of it. But don’t worry, I’ve already spoken to the caretaker.”

Henry Clark nodded. In that case, it didn’t seem so difficult.

“I should clarify, I left the Feng family after the college entrance exam.” After a pause, Henry Clark added, “We had different values.”

Someone who left the Feng family going to the ancestral home to look up the family tree and add his name—that was a slap in the face, definitely a huge challenge. Judging by what happens in historical dramas, Henry Clark knew he’d have to plan carefully.

Old Butler picked up on Henry Clark’s concerns and said, “You don’t need to worry. The genealogy has nothing to do with the Feng family members over there. Back then, Ms. Feng personally placed the genealogy in your family’s ancestral home—no one else knows about it.”

Henry Clark raised his eyebrows.

That didn’t sound quite right.
