Chapter 20

Gavin Dawson spoke honestly: "Probably not."

Samuel Harris seemed to realize something, his voice very soft: "Dad said he bought a big house near your school. When I get out of the hospital, we'll move there, okay? That way we can eat together."

Gavin Dawson hesitated for a moment: "Brother might have to live on campus next month, so I can't live with you. Do you know what a high school student is? High school students have a really heavy workload..."

Samuel Harris was a sharp little kid, and Gavin Dawson was afraid he'd notice something was off, so he simply dragged Logan Carter in as a shield: "Ask my classmate—aren't we always drowning in books every day, barely even having time to go to the bathroom?"

Logan Carter saw that he was even using academics as an excuse and couldn't help but laugh: "Yeah, your brother studies pretty hard."

But unexpectedly, as soon as he said this, Samuel Harris looked at him, then at Gavin Dawson.

His eyes slowly turned red.

Children's feelings are often clear and sensitive; he could sense Gavin Dawson's resistance toward him.

Seeing his expression, Gavin Dawson froze for a second, then remembered to comfort him: "Don't cry, okay? It's just that I have to put studying first. I actually want to live with you too... Don't cry, don't cry, alright?"

Samuel Harris was usually quiet and never made a fuss, and Gavin Dawson wasn't good at comforting people. He had no experience. With Gavin Dawson's gentle coaxing, Samuel Harris's emotions only got more out of control, and he started crying outright.

Gavin Dawson was caught off guard, completely unable to understand why comforting Samuel Harris only made him cry harder. Thinking that Charles Harris was about to come over, and if he saw Samuel Harris crying because of him, who knows what he'd think.

He had no choice but to look at Logan Carter for help.

Logan Carter wasn't great at comforting people either, but he did have younger cousins at home. He hesitated for a moment, then gently patted the child's head: "Be good, don't cry."

Samuel Harris cried even harder.

Gavin Dawson: "!!!!"

Gavin Dawson was about to lose it: "Logan Carter, can you do it or not? He's crying even harder!"

Logan Carter: "......"

Logan Carter suddenly realized something, but Gavin Dawson's rather blunt "can you do it or not" still made the corner of his mouth twitch.

He suddenly asked, "I have an idea, not sure if it'll work. If I can get him to stop crying...?"

Gavin Dawson was so dizzy from Samuel Harris's crying that he blurted out, "If you can get him to stop crying, I'll call you dad."

After saying it, he felt a bit of regret, but Logan Carter looked up at him and said lightly, "You said it."

He squatted down, looked Samuel Harris in the eye, and whispered something in the child's ear as if sharing a secret.

Samuel Harris was stunned, then looked up at Gavin Dawson with teary eyes. As he looked, the tears in his eyes were actually forced back.

Gavin Dawson looked at Logan Carter in disbelief, just about to ask what kind of magic trick he'd used on Samuel Harris, when suddenly there was a rush of hurried footsteps.

Gavin Dawson saw Charles Harris walking quickly toward them and called out, "Uncle He."

"The doctor said he can't have this junk food..." Charles Harris took the Coke from Samuel Harris's hand. He glanced at Logan Carter, and seeing there was an outsider present, he lowered his voice and said to Gavin Dawson, "He doesn't know any better, but how could you let him mess around like this?"

Gavin Dawson was stunned for a moment: "Sorry."

Charles Harris was also taken aback when he heard the apology.

Samuel Harris sensed the tense atmosphere and interjected, "It's not that, Dad, I wanted to drink the Coke myself."

Charles Harris saw Gavin Dawson looking down and explained, "I'm not blaming you. It's just that the doctor said these things are really bad for his health, so we never let him have them. I was just in a hurry just now..."

Gavin Dawson nodded.

The atmosphere was a bit awkward.

Charles Harris asked, "I heard from your mom that you're not staying for dinner?"

"No, I'm going out with my classmate. Uncle He, you and Samuel go on up first."

"Then have fun, and be safe."

Gavin Dawson nodded.

As they left, Samuel Harris in the wheelchair looked back several times. When Gavin Dawson saw the father and son leave, the expression on his face gradually faded.

He returned to his usual laid-back self. Seeing Logan Carter looking at him, Gavin Dawson lazily raised an eyebrow, his voice casual: "What did you say to him just now? It worked pretty well, he stopped crying right away."

Logan Carter's gaze lingered on his face for a moment, eyes narrowing slightly, his voice carrying an indescribable emotion:

"I told him, if you keep crying, your brother will cry with you too."

"..." Gavin Dawson really hadn't expected that would work.

"And then he stopped, pretty sensible." Logan Carter seemed to recall something and suddenly smiled: "What about you? Shouldn't you be a bit more sensible too?"

"What?"

Seeing that he'd completely forgotten what he'd just said, Logan Carter kindly offered Gavin Dawson two options: "Do you want to call me dad or daddy?"

Gavin Dawson thought to himself, I'd rather kill you.

"I think..."

"I don't think you'll go back on your word," Logan Carter cut in first. "Right?"
