Chapter 2

In just a moment, Grace Bennett arrived at the entrance of the compound. On both sides, two guards in neat uniforms caught sight of Grace Bennett, and a strange look flashed in their eyes at the same time. But immediately after, they became completely expressionless, as if they hadn’t seen him at all.

Grace Bennett also treated the two as if they were air, striding out of the compound.

Then, standing at the intersection outside the compound, Grace Bennett turned back and took a deep look inside before turning away again. This time, there was no trace of his former hesitation or confusion in his eyes—only determination remained.

After crossing an intersection, Grace Bennett suddenly pulled out his phone from his jeans pocket and dialed a number.

“Yu-ge? You’re out?” The call was quickly answered, and a gentle yet surprised male voice came from the other end.

“William Thompson, why did you set me up?” Hearing the familiar voice, Grace Bennett was instantly overwhelmed with rage. He had never imagined that one day, his own younger brother would do this to him. Even though William Thompson wasn’t his biological brother, but an orphan adopted by Edward Bennett from a deceased close friend, Grace Bennett had never treated him as an outsider.

He never expected that one day, this brother would push him into the abyss.

Even now, though he had escaped safely, he had lost the trust of his family, including his father. Perhaps, in this world now, the only one who would still believe him was his mother.

“Ah, Yu-ge, how could you say that?” Hearing Grace Bennett’s furious words, William Thompson on the other end sounded extremely surprised, with a hint of panic in his reply.

“Ha, even now you’re still pretending? Lin Xiaoqing was brought by you, and that night, I only had one drink and got drunk immediately. When I woke up, I was already at the police station? Do you really take me for an idiot?!” Grace Bennett grew even angrier, growling into the phone in a low voice.

At this moment, he was truly in pain. If he could, he would have loved nothing more than to skin the guy on the other end alive.

But unexpectedly, after his low growl, William Thompson on the other end sighed with deep emotion, “Yu-ge, you’re still angry right now. If you insist on believing it was me, there’s nothing I can do. Fine, let’s just leave it at that.”

As the sigh faded, the call was abruptly cut off.

Hearing the sudden beeping, Grace Bennett was stunned for a moment, then flew into a rage. With a loud smack, he hurled his phone to the ground, then walked forward without looking back.

But as he walked, he nearly ground his teeth to pieces.

This time, he had truly lost everything—family, career, loved ones, everything! And the reason for all this was simply that he had trusted his brother too much, or rather, had never guarded against him at all. Thinking of this, Grace Bennett felt an overwhelming urge to break down and cry.

Just as Grace Bennett, filled with pain, walked into the darkness, in the southern province, atop a luxurious hotel, a handsome man with a hint of gloom on his face also slammed his phone down on the table.

“What’s wrong? Not happy? Didn’t you already get rid of that loser?” As the man put down his phone, a pair of snow-white arms wrapped around him from behind, and a beautiful face pressed against his cheek.

“No, I’m too happy! Heh, with the old man’s temper, even if Grace Bennett is released, from now on, he’ll never be able to set foot in the Xu family again. That means everything the old man has in Huaijiang Province will be mine! Hey, baby, it’s all thanks to you this time…” As the woman asked, the man burst out laughing.

“Hehe, yeah, he’s the son of the municipal party secretary—a real princeling. I really took a huge risk this time. If anything had gone wrong, it would have been a disaster.” As the man laughed, the woman giggled as well, but then she asked in confusion, “William Thompson, since he’s already been arrested, why didn’t you let me insist on pressing charges? If we kept going, he’d definitely go to jail. Attempted rape can get you locked up for years—he’d be finished, never able to make a comeback.”

“You don’t understand.” Facing the woman’s question, William Thompson smiled again and said softly, “The dignified eldest son of the municipal party secretary, taking advantage of his brother’s absence and drunkenness to try to rape his future sister-in-law while celebrating his career success—tsk tsk… The old man couldn’t bear that kind of disgrace. As long as nothing happens, no one in Ningshi would dare investigate. But if he really went to jail, no matter how bad the old man’s temper is, he’d never just watch him go in—he’d definitely get to the bottom of it! If anything went wrong then, we’d be the ones finished.”

“Hehe, I guess I just don’t get it. But you really are ruthless—even to your own brother!” Hearing William Thompson’s words, the woman smiled again, her voice sweet and tender.
