Chapter 10

Henry Brooks looked at Samuel Green's back and shook his head to himself: It seems that when I came in, he was still talking with the little girl, but I happened to interrupt that conversation... The daughter of a county constable, how can she so calmly talk to a naked burly man? What kind of upbringing is this... and she's a little beauty too?!

"This is Yuntai Mountain, south of Haizhou. This is the Lotus Courtyard inside the Peach Blossom Temple. Behind the main hall where you are is the back garden of this courtyard, and there is a lotus pond there... Wait a minute, how do you know that big man is a good person?" Henry Brooks mustered his courage and finished saying this.

The two female companions I brought were still collapsed on the ground, vomiting, but the twelve- or thirteen-year-old girl leaning against the door was able to calmly converse with the naked, blood-soaked perpetrator standing amidst a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood. Just this courage alone is at least better than my own companions... maybe even better than me.

The little girl glanced at the blood-covered Samuel Green, a faint, almost imperceptible smile appearing at the corner of her mouth: "He was also kidnapped by the traffickers. A few days ago, the traffickers stripped off his clothes, tied him up, and threw him into my carriage, so I know of his existence."

Henry Brooks plucked up his courage, looked at the blood-soaked man, and grinned foolishly: "What bad luck! Such a big guy, and he could still be kidnapped by traffickers."

The little girl at the door's eyes flickered, and she burst out laughing: "Who told him to get drunk and wander around in the wilderness?"

For her to still be able to laugh at this moment, the scene at the time must have been truly ridiculous.

The little girl's composure affected Alice Benson and Miss Harper, and the two of them stopped vomiting. Coming to her senses, Miss Harper hurriedly shouted, "Quick, cover him with some clothes. Being naked like this... what does it look like?"

Samuel Green scratched his head and made a slight turning motion—instantly, Miss Harper and Henry Brooks screamed at the same time, shouting, "Don't move, just stay like that, don't turn around, whatever you do, don't turn around!"

The little girl leaning against the door smiled, revealing her white, tiny teeth: "He’s already been beaten silly by the traffickers."

Henry Brooks quickly picked up the conversation, looking at the naked man, half-believing, half-doubting, and asked, "Tell us, what exactly happened here?"

The little girl recounted in a calm, soft voice: "On the Lantern Festival, crowds surged in Jiangdu County... I was kidnapped by several traffickers and thrown into a carriage. The carriage headed north, always taking remote roads, never stopping along the way.

One night, the carriage suddenly stopped. The driver said there was a drunk man ahead, walking slowly and singing, blocking the carriage and delaying the traffickers’ journey... Time was tight, and the traffickers didn’t want to take another route, so they followed him to a secluded spot, knocked him out with a club, and, afraid he’d wake up, fed him a large amount of knockout drugs, stripped him, tied him up, and stuffed him into my carriage.

Because of this delay, dawn broke, and with people coming and going along the way, the traffickers couldn’t deal with him... So they kept going, bringing him here. They originally planned to find a place nearby to bury him today, but suddenly heard laughter and voices outside the temple, so they decided to drown him in the lotus pond tonight—instead, he suddenly woke up just now.

Maybe he’d been drugged too much on the way, and kept being drugged over and over. When he first woke up, he was groggy, and the traffickers wanted to knock him out again, but this time, instead of knocking him out, the blow made him angry. He jumped into the courtyard and started hitting everyone he saw... and then, you saw what happened."

Henry Brooks steadied himself and quickly called out, "Quick, help the two ladies up. Don’t you have any sense? Don’t you see Miss Harper is lying down? Edward Clark, go get some men and have Michael Bolton notify the constable at once."

After arranging these matters, Henry Brooks suddenly realized something was off. He quickly stared at the little girl and pressed, "How do you know that man has been beaten silly?"

The little girl answered without hesitation: "Just now, he couldn’t remember his own name or hometown, kept asking me what year it is now, and even asked who the current emperor is—if that’s not silly, what is?"

Samuel Green, the subject of everyone’s discussion, had already calmed down. He swaggered over to one of the "bandits," bent down to strip the dead man’s clothes, and, to everyone’s shock, calmly picked out a clean set, put them on, and muttered words that Henry Brooks couldn’t understand: "It’s actually the Song Dynasty, and it’s still that Daoist Emperor Song Huizong in power... That’s it, there aren’t many good days left."

Henry Brooks pretended not to see Samuel Green destroying the crime scene. He glanced at the side rooms... Before Henry Brooks could speak, the little girl across from him perceptively answered, "The side rooms on both sides are full of girls they kidnapped. The traffickers usually guard them in the side rooms, and only came out when they heard the commotion."

Henry Brooks immediately asked, "It’s been so long, why haven’t they made any noise?"

The little girl replied, "That’s because you were blocking the temple wall outside. The traffickers were afraid the girls would shout and cause trouble, so they gave them knockout drugs in advance."

Henry Brooks retorted, "Why didn’t they give you knockout drugs?"

"I was very obedient—I'm the daughter of the county constable. The traffickers, after kidnapping me, were afraid my father would track them down and take revenge, so they kept me close and watched me carefully. Since I didn’t cry or make a fuss along the way, the traffickers naturally forgot to drug me."
