Chapter One: What Are You Going to Do to My Daughter?
Night.
Edward Clark drifted aimlessly in the air.
He was a paratrooper, carrying out a combat mission. He had jumped out of the cabin with his comrades, and then suddenly, day turned into night...
Just like that.
It was as if the scene on a screen had switched—one moment it was bright and sunny, the next it was pitch black. The parachutes that had filled the sky vanished with the change, and in the darkness around him, he was the only one left, falling alone. All his electronic devices had lost signal—no GPS, no communication, not even the roar of the plane’s engines above.
It was overcast, too—not a single star in the sky.
But there were scattered lights below.
There seemed to be a large river reflecting faint ripples, but nothing else was visible—just a vast, dark land.
And those scattered lights were clearly not electric.
They looked more like firelight.
He hung beneath his parachute, still drifting down in confusion.
Soon, countless vague outlines appeared among the scattered lights, like a group of monsters lurking in the darkness, raising their heads, waiting to be fed. And he was the delicacy thrown down by fate. With anxiety and unease, he drew closer to the ground. He could just make out that he was above a huge city, with towering buildings looming like a crowd of giants watching him.
Then...
He landed.
He quickly and skillfully unfastened his parachute, raised his rifle, and got into combat mode as fast as possible, crouching as he crawled out from under the parachute...
A pale face suddenly appeared.
He instinctively gasped, but then saw clearly—it was just a little girl.
"Shh!"
He quickly covered the stunned little girl's mouth and lowered his voice.
Because he was crouched, their faces were almost level. The girl looked about middle school age, but she was dressed in ancient clothing, and for some reason, she didn’t even have a flashlight—just stood there in the dark, less than half a meter away, staring at him in shock, as if she were looking at a monster. Edward Clark kept his hand over her mouth and carefully observed his surroundings. He realized this was a classical-style garden, with artificial rocks. The little girl was standing by the rocks, with a pond behind her and flowers and plants all around.
He let out a sigh of relief.
"Be good, I’ll give you some candy!"
He put on a smile and whispered.
Then he pushed the little girl against the rocks, kept her mouth covered, took out a piece of chocolate, tore open the wrapper with his teeth, pressed it to her lips, and let go...
"Ah..."
He stuffed it into her mouth as she let out a short scream.
"Don’t scream, let’s talk calmly."
Edward Clark said sincerely.
The little girl, her cheeks pinched by him, looked at him in terror, whimpering with chocolate at the corners of her mouth. In the faint glow of his watch, she looked like a little white rabbit caught by the big bad wolf.
Edward Clark thought for a moment and drew his knife, waving it in front of her. She immediately nodded frantically—clearly, this was more effective than chocolate.
Edward Clark slowly let go.
The little girl quickly spat out the chocolate...
"Are you trying to poison me?"
She said, eyes brimming with tears.
Edward Clark was stunned...
"I admit this stuff doesn’t taste great, but that’s a bit much."
He said, a little offended after realizing what she meant.
He watched as the little girl spat out the chocolate and took out a handkerchief, habitually wiping her mouth...
"You still say it’s not poison? I’m already coughing up blood."
She cried.
She looked at the dark smear on her handkerchief, imagining herself spitting blood, and couldn’t help but feel even more miserable. She opened her mouth, about to cry.
Edward Clark quickly pushed her against the rocks again and covered her mouth.
"Don’t be like this. Didn’t you taste that it’s actually a delicacy?"
He looked at her, speechless.
Even as he said it, he knew he was being dishonest—calling ninety percent dark chocolate a delicacy was a stretch.
The girl gazed longingly at the night sky, as if waiting for death to come.
Edward Clark helplessly took out another piece, stuffed it into his own mouth, and ate it. Her look turned to surprise. Edward Clark opened his mouth to show he had swallowed it, then took out another piece and ate it. Seeing her confusion, he finally let go. When she saw he was fine, Edward Clark began to look around, but unfortunately, he couldn’t make out anything. It was just a garden, with some tall buildings in the distance and a few lights, but nothing else was visible.
He looked at the little girl helplessly.
"So, where is this place?"
He asked with a forced smile.
"Are you an immortal? I saw you come down from the sky with a big umbrella."
The little girl, a bit calmer now, asked innocently.
Edward Clark looked at her...
"Yes, I am an immortal, a deity who came down from the heavens!"
