Chapter 4

Seeing this scene, David Young felt the veins on his forehead throbbing uncontrollably.

“Brian Clark!” he roared.

“Get your ass over here and get to work!”

……

Emily Brooks looked at the handsome boy in front of her with beautiful tanned skin, and her heart was beating much faster than usual.

In her eyes, this boy was simply flawless—tall and good-looking, his smile revealed teeth as white as jade, his eyes sparkled like stars in the sky, and even his casually tied-back hair looked great, exuding a wild, unruly charm. Other people looked sloppy in baggy sportswear, but on him, it made him look lazy and sexy…

Who says sportswear is ugly? It’s the person wearing it who’s ugly!

The more Emily Brooks looked, the more entranced she became. Just as she was about to muster the courage to invite Brian Clark out on a date, a loud shout suddenly came from the direction of the field: “Brian Clark! Get your ass over here and get to work!”

She had just opened her mouth when she saw Brian Clark turn his head and reply, “Coming!”

Then he waved at her, turned around, and jogged away in a relaxed, swaying manner.

Emily Brooks felt a bit regretful and annoyed at herself—how could she have been so busy daydreaming that she forgot the most important thing?

But when she saw Brian Clark’s swaying, perky backside as he walked away, her eyes grew dreamy again—even being so nonchalant, he was still so handsome. It’s killing me!

Chapter Two: Do You Still Want to Play Soccer?

Owen Brooks finished training and couldn’t wait to drag his sister away. He didn’t want his sister to stay here any longer—if she stayed even a bit more, her soul would be stolen by Coach Clark…

And Emily Brooks, who was pulled away by Owen Brooks, was indeed reluctant, looking back every few steps. She still hadn’t managed to invite him out, and once the moment was gone, it felt like her courage vanished with it.

The other kids were picked up by their parents one after another, and the soccer field where the training class was held gradually returned to quiet and emptiness.

The sun was setting in the west, and the shadows of a row of makeshift houses by the field stretched long across the pitch. It was already late; without turning on the lights, it would be impossible to play soccer here at night.

Of course, David Young’s training class couldn’t afford the high electricity bills—lighting the field used a lot of power—so it closed at night. Actually, if there were a lot of kids coming to learn soccer in the evenings, it wouldn’t be impossible to pay a bit for electricity and open another class, but there just weren’t enough students.

In reality, David Young’s soccer training class only had two sessions, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. There weren’t that many kids interested in soccer, and parents willing to pay to send their kids to play soccer were few and far between.

The state of Chinese soccer was just like this shabby, rundown field—no one wanted anything to do with it. If you really sent your kid to play soccer, it was as if you’d ruined their life—no parent would willingly do such a thing.

Brian Clark and David Young put all the training equipment away in the storage room. He locked the door, took the key, and was about to go out for dinner.

At that moment, David Young stopped him.

“What are you thinking?”

Seeing Coach Young’s serious expression, Brian Clark was a bit surprised and flustered, quickly explaining, “I really have no interest in Owen Brooks’s sister, old man, don’t get the wrong idea. Don’t worry, I’d never do anything to tarnish our training class’s reputation…”

David Young hadn’t expected Brian Clark to answer like that. He smacked Brian Clark on the head in annoyance. “What are you thinking! That’s not what I’m asking about!”

Brian Clark patted his chest and let out a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness…”

“Thank goodness for what? I’m asking about your plans for the future!”

Brian Clark put his hand on his chest.

“Mr. Clark called me today.”

“My dad?”

David Young nodded. “He asked me to persuade you to go back to university.”

Brian Clark fell silent.

“I think your dad has a point. According to the rules, national first-class athletes under twenty-two can get special admission to university. You’re not even twenty yet, you could easily go to college, then find a job after graduation…”

Brian Clark shook his head and refused without hesitation. “I’m not going.”

David Young wasn’t surprised by his attitude, and didn’t try to persuade him further. Instead, he offered another option: “Then go get a coaching license and become a coach.”

Brian Clark pulled a face. “I’m not cut out to be a coach. I can’t even manage myself, let alone others.”

The two of them were like “soldiers blocking water with earth”—every suggestion David Young made, Brian Clark shot down with some excuse.

Until David Young suddenly asked, “Then do you still want to play soccer?”

Brian Clark opened his mouth, but didn’t say anything.

“Speak up, weren’t you just talking a lot?”

Brian Clark could only shake his head. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know? Then why do you go out and play matches every week?”

“I do it for the money. They’re all amateur games, just to make some living expenses…” Brian Clark said with a grin.

“If you want to make money, why not sign a contract with me? I’ll pay you a salary every month, so you wouldn’t have to be a ‘mercenary.’ Do you know what people say about you online?”
