Chapter 8

Suddenly, the black mist that had been thinner before rapidly increased, rolling and churning faster, morphing into various shapes. All at once, that mass of black mist stopped swirling and transformed into the shape of a person, lying quietly above the patient. The patient’s heart monitor suddenly emitted a piercing alarm, the heart rate became a straight line, and his family hurriedly called for the doctor. The doctor came over, took a look, and shook his head at the family.

Not sure if it was an illusion or not... William Clark felt as if that human-shaped black mist moved a little.

“Damn, did it really move...?”

William Clark suddenly widened his eyes. The human-shaped black mist that had been lying flat suddenly stood up straight, opened its eyes, looked at the weeping family below, and revealed a trace of sadness.

Whoosh... whoosh... Suddenly, a pitch-black vortex appeared behind the human-shaped black mist, growing larger and larger until it was big enough for two people. An iron chain, exuding a sinister and eerie aura even in this black-and-white world, extended from the vortex and instantly wrapped around the human-shaped black mist, pulling it toward the vortex. The moment it entered the vortex, the vortex vanished without a trace, as if it had never appeared.

William Clark disconnected the link between his eyes and the mysterious markings. He sat dumbfounded on the hospital bed, recalling everything he had just witnessed, thinking, “Could that human-shaped black mist be the legendary ghost? And what about that black vortex and iron chain?”

A few years ago, William Clark had watched a Hong Kong horror movie called “Yin-Yang Eyes.” He remembered the plot only vaguely—it was a ghost film about people with yin-yang eyes who could see through the worlds of the living and the dead.

After watching that movie, William Clark had looked up a lot of information, which said that people with yin-yang eyes were usually born in a yin year, yin month, yin day, yin hour, and yin place. Those with yin-yang eyes could not only see ghosts but also communicate with them to some extent.

After reading this information, William Clark dismissed it as nonsense. After all, he had been raised as an atheist for so many years and just treated these things as stories.

Later, he saw some modern official explanations, saying that yin-yang eyes were just hallucinations caused by sleep and psychological issues. William Clark thought that was the real answer.

It wasn’t until this moment that William Clark realized those things weren’t all nonsense—yin-yang eyes really existed!

William Clark focused his mind again, connecting the mysterious markings with his eyes. The world in William Clark’s eyes once again turned black and white. He stood on the hospital room’s windowsill, gazing outside. The entire hospital was shrouded in black mist, some in large clusters, some in small ones, forming a black cloud. The black cloud churned and morphed into all sorts of strange shapes, making the already monotonous black-and-white world feel especially eerie. William Clark felt a chill in his heart and his scalp tingled—after all, he had never experienced anything like this before.

Suppressing his fear, William Clark used his yin-yang eyes to observe everything outside, his brows gradually furrowing. Something wasn’t right! According to the information and movies he’d seen, weren’t yin-yang eyes supposed to only see ghosts? He could indeed see ghosts, but what about the black mist that hadn’t yet formed into ghosts?

William Clark stepped down from the windowsill and sat on the bed, pondering deeply—what was going on? Suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck him. Could it be...

To test his theory, William Clark used his yin-yang eyes to observe normal people. After looking at dozens of people, he saw no black mist above their heads. William Clark walked through the hospital corridors, watching the patients passing by. Every patient in the hospital had some amount of black mist above their heads, more or less.

William Clark went to the small park behind the hospital and sat on a bench. He saw that some trees, bushes, and especially some seasonal flowers and plants were also shrouded in rolling black mist.

To confirm his suspicion, William Clark caught a grasshopper in the grass. Under the yin-yang eyes, there was not a trace of black mist on the grasshopper. William Clark grabbed the grasshopper and slammed it hard onto the ground. The once lively grasshopper flailed wildly on the ground, and a mass of black mist quickly appeared above its head, churning there. As the grasshopper’s movements slowed, the black mist above its head grew thicker. Eventually, the grasshopper stopped moving, and the black mist above its head took on the shape of a grasshopper.

“Death energy... it really is death energy...”

William Clark gasped in shock, utterly astonished. He had never heard of yin-yang eyes being able to see a person’s death energy, let alone the death energy of plants and animals. William Clark took a deep breath, finally calming down.

Suddenly, William Clark thought of the two people who had shared his hospital room earlier—one had more death energy, the other less. The one with more death energy was gradually losing it. Did that mean her illness was slowly improving? The thought made William Clark extremely excited.

This was definitely not something ordinary yin-yang eyes could do. So what should this be called? Right, let’s call it the Life-and-Death Eye!

Unable to contain his joy, William Clark burst out laughing. After all, even though he had only discovered that he could see a person’s death energy, he believed this mysterious marking would bring him even more. Who knew—maybe, just like in the legend of Zhong Kui, he could one day vanquish demons and evil spirits from the world!
