Chapter 18

Wayne Baker slowly drove the car out of the dealership and, following Veronica Smith's instructions, purchased a batch of supplies. In addition, he also prepared two barrels of gasoline, two cases of drinking water, an unspecified number of canned goods, chocolate, and compressed biscuits.

Veronica Smith's intention was to go quickly and return quickly—catch Blood Mike, lift the curse, and leave. They wouldn't stay in Cafuno Town for long; if all went well, they could return to London that very night.

She made a lot of sense, so Wayne Baker bought plenty of supplies—better safe than sorry.

The one driving was Veronica Smith. The young lady, having left the troubles of poverty behind at an early age, was therefore a very skilled driver.

By contrast, William Johnson, sitting in the passenger seat, was a driver beyond description. He had a license—university rules were strict: no graduation without a license. After braving wind and rain, it took him two years to finally get it.

In the back seat were Wayne Baker and the black cat Monica Harris. Originally, Veronica Smith wanted Wayne Baker to drive, but since Teacher Monica Harris needed to give a lesson, the young lady became the designated driver for this trip.

“Don’t rush. The seed of magic power can’t be achieved overnight. It’s more like a kind of guidance and inheritance—unless you’re a genius…”

Seeing that Wayne Baker was a bit impatient for results, Monica Harris began to counsel him, explaining in detail the foundation of all supernatural power—magic.

Magic is the lever that pries open the supernatural. Without magic, nothing can even begin.

For ordinary people to obtain magic and become an apprentice mage or magic student, the relatively gentle method is meditation.

If you have connections, a mentor can guide you. For example, the magic seed that Monica Harris planted in Wayne Baker is one such method of guidance.

A more radical way is to walk the path of faith in the supernatural, pleasing the gods to gain powerful magic.

The former is slow; many people get stuck at this stage and waste a lot of time. The latter is much faster, but far less peaceful and safe.

After all, in the minds of believers, all other gods are heretical, evil, and false—only their own god is eternally righteous and glorious.

After being processed and spread by believers, ninety-nine percent of the gods’ stories are fabricated. Ordinary people are completely in the dark; choosing a faith is like opening a blind box.

If you’re lucky, you join a proper organization, upholding justice and fighting evil—a true hero.

If you’re unlucky, you end up worshipping an evil god who delights in tormenting followers, with monthly and yearly quotas for sacrifices. Not only do you suffer, but you also become a minion of an evil god, hunted by all.

But that’s getting off track—back to the magic seed.

The black cat Monica Harris shared her own magic with Wayne Baker, using magic to awaken magic, allowing Wayne Baker to skip the grueling early stage of meditation.

In the future, if Wayne Baker wants to strengthen his magic, he’ll still need persistent meditation. But going from zero to one is the hardest part—skipping that stage saves a lot of time and energy.

The chance of success is fifty-fifty. Everyone has the potential to become a mage, but not every attempt at using magic to awaken magic will succeed.

“So, if you fail this time, don’t get discouraged. Try a few more times and you’ll succeed eventually.”

Strictly speaking, Monica Harris didn’t have to guide Wayne Baker to become a mage. If this trip went smoothly, the curse on Wayne Baker could be lifted completely. She would only need to replenish his magic for a short time to keep his soul from starving.

The reason she put in so much effort—planting the seed, giving lectures—was purely because of Wayne Baker himself.

As a follower of the Moon Goddess, Monica Harris is hostile to the Goddess of Death and the Goddess of Darkness. By intercepting Wayne Baker, who was targeted by the Death Walkers, she could not only foil their plans but also add a living force to her own side.

A double win!

It’s worth mentioning that Monica Harris’s faith is in the Moon Goddess, but Veronica Smith and William Johnson are not. The former is a follower of the Nature Goddess, while the latter offers his faith to the Sun Goddess.

Nature, Sun, Moonlight VS Death, Darkness—the struggle among the five goddesses goes back a thousand years.

Wayne Baker kept his eyes closed and remained silent the whole time, listening to the black cat teacher’s lecture and, following her tips, explored the existence of his own magic.

The all-nighter was not in vain. He quickly found his own magic. As a beginner, he couldn’t describe magic in professional terms, but in his own understanding, magic was the result of the close connection of essence, energy, and spirit. Moreover…

Spirit took the dominant role.

Spirit refers to the mind, thought, and willpower. Only this kind of wisdom, born from the body and existing between matter and energy, can stir magic and thus pry open the world bound by rules.

Wayne Baker sensed a lot and saw his own magic—pure white, but very different from Monica Harris’s magic seed. The two kinds of white were worlds apart.

One was a colored white; the other, the original white.

At the moment Wayne Baker’s magic was awakened, the magic seed left by Monica Harris was instantly shattered. This scene caught the attention of Veronica Smith and William Johnson, and left Monica Harris dumbfounded.

She hadn’t expected much—she just wanted Wayne Baker to get familiar with the magic seed on the first try. There would be plenty of chances after the curse was lifted. She never imagined…
