“Evelyn, the security here is really strict. No wonder everyone wants to live here. Jack Wilson has already done three phases of this villa project and is still working on it. It seems his Biwan Group really knows a thing or two about developing these high-end villas.” William Carter leaned back in his seat, the climate control making the temperature in the car just right, making him even sleepier.
“One gets what one pays for. Biwan really does a great job with specialized niche projects. Just as Jack Wilson said, he only makes the money he deserves, and he really has stuck to that.” The woman’s lips curled up slightly as she glanced affectionately at William Carter. “So, when are you moving in?”
“I’m afraid I’ll have to wait a bit longer.” William Carter shook his head with a wry smile. “I’m not a free man.”
“What do you mean, not a free man? Hasn’t it been over a year since you and Grace Bennett divorced? And isn’t Little John in New Zealand, not planning to come back? What are you still hung up on?” The woman said, a little jealously.
“Oh, you. What’s the point of being jealous about this? Don’t you know what my relationship with Grace Bennett is like? What’s my current status? Unless we get married, how could I live here with you? But can we get married now?” William Carter sighed. “Don’t you care about your career?”
“What does my career have to do with marrying you?” The woman was a bit annoyed. “You always use that as an excuse. Sure, I’m in real estate development, but I’ve never done a project in your Wuyou District, or in Longtai County where you used to work. My company hasn’t done any projects there, we have nothing to do with each other. Why can’t we get married? Why do I have to give up my own career?”
“You’re right, you haven’t done any projects in my jurisdiction, but others don’t see it that way. The higher-ups won’t see it that way. You’re getting a bit of a reputation in the city now. If we got married, what would people think? It wouldn’t be good for either of us. You know my situation.” William Carter frowned. “I know you’ll say you don’t care what others think, but we don’t live in a vacuum. We have to face the complex realities of society every day. Evelyn, let’s just wait a bit longer.”
A trace of tears appeared at the corner of the woman’s eyes, and she fell silent. The Mercedes stopped at the red light ahead.
At that moment, the quiet street was suddenly filled with the rumble of a heavy vehicle speeding by. William Carter found it odd—this stretch of road was off-limits to trucks, and even at night, dump trucks rarely came this way. He instinctively turned his head, and a beam of bright white light shot from behind. The towering cab of a truck roared around the corner behind them, not slowing down at all—in fact, it was accelerating.
A chill ran down William Carter’s spine, his hair standing on end, a huge sense of impending danger flooding his body. “Evelyn, go! Now!”
The woman reacted quickly. Without waiting for the light to change, she slammed on the gas. The Mercedes’ tires screeched against the pavement as the car shot forward like a cheetah. The heavy truck behind them was still accelerating, reaching its top speed, completely ignoring the traffic light as it barreled through the spot where the Mercedes had just been, chasing after the speeding car.
“What’s going on?!” The woman glanced in terror at the pale-faced William Carter. “Who are they?”
The intense tension made William Carter’s mouth go dry. He had no idea what was happening. The heavy truck behind them was clearly after the two of them, but whether it was targeting him or Evelyn Clark, he couldn’t tell. But none of that mattered now—surviving this was all that mattered.
Once the Mercedes picked up speed, the heavy truck behind was quickly left behind. William Carter barely had time to breathe a sigh of relief when, at the corner ahead, headlights suddenly flared. Two heavy dump trucks roared around the bend side by side, heading straight for them!
“Ah!” Before William Carter or the woman could react, the two dump trucks floored their accelerators, thundering toward them. As they neared the Mercedes, one of the trucks suddenly swerved to the side and slammed on the brakes, its massive cargo bed sweeping across and smashing heavily into the front of the Mercedes.
“Boom!” After the dull crash, it was as if time itself paused for a moment. The hissing sound of steam spraying from the radiator was especially clear in the silent night.
With that violent impact, William Carter felt as if the blood in his heart was instantly forced out of his veins, gushing from his mouth and nose.
The airbag was useless at this point. The force of the collision had shattered the entire front half of the Mercedes. He tried desperately to struggle, but his strength was draining away bit by bit.
With all his remaining strength, he turned his head to look at the woman, whose face was also pale and whose lips were frothing with blood. Trembling, he reached out and finally grasped her limp wrist. “I’m sorry, Evelyn.”
“It’s me who dragged you into this, William. See you in the next life.” Blood gushed from her mouth as she tried her best to force a smile, but her life froze at that moment. William Carter’s vision gradually blurred, and his consciousness slowly faded away.
