Chapter 17

Sarah Miller slapped away Ethan Brooks's hand in shock and exclaimed excitedly, "You are not my son, you are the son of God!"

Sarah Miller wanting to enter Charles Bennett's tent was no longer much of a secret in this small tribe.

Many women in the tribe were envious.

They would wait along the paths Charles Bennett had to take, and as soon as they caught sight of Charles Bennett, they would shake their lice-ridden braids, bat their eyes, sway their hips, and coquettishly try to charm this promising man.

This made Sarah Miller extremely angry. She had attacked those women more than once—sometimes throwing stones, sometimes spindles, but most often spitting and cursing at them.

Emily Clark would naturally help her mother, so this little one had recently learned to roll her eyes and spit.

Whenever Emily Clark spat and cursed at people, those women would chase after Emily Clark. Whenever Emily Clark was chased, Ethan Brooks would jump up and chase those nasty women. And whenever Ethan Brooks started chasing those women, their fathers, brothers, and younger brothers would gang up on Ethan Brooks.

At that point, Charles Bennett would immediately step in and beat up the men who were ganging up on Ethan Brooks.

Beating women was not something Ethan Brooks would normally do, but in this Sairen tribe, you simply had to!

If you didn't hit her, she would think you were a coward, feel unsafe around you, call you a "lamb under the sun," and would actively go after those men who were especially good at beating women.

At first, Ethan Brooks couldn't understand why they would actively seek out a beating, but after spending a long time in the Huihe tribe, he started to get the hang of it.

It wasn't that the women here liked being beaten, but that they believed finding a strong, hot-tempered man to rely on was the only way to survive in this world.

Just like wild sheep fight with their horns for mating rights, this practice was just as popular in the Huihe tribe.

Those affectionate, gentle scholars from the plays, who lived harmoniously with their wives, probably wouldn't survive three days in this environment.

Therefore, only men who were highly skilled in combat, physically strong, and as hot-tempered as rams were the top choices for Huihe women seeking husbands.

With help from Ethan Brooks and Charles Bennett, Sarah Miller and Emily Clark could always emerge as the final victors, spitting on the faces of the women who had fallen to the ground.

As for the battered and bruised Ethan Brooks and the nosebleeding Charles Bennett, the mother and daughter simply didn't see it.

In their eyes, a man who wasn't bruised and battered, who didn't have a nosebleed, simply wasn't worthy of living with them!

A "lamb under the sun" and a "wolf under the sun" were worlds apart.

There was no doubt that Ethan Brooks and Charles Bennett were the latter!

Back in the tent, Ethan Brooks and Charles Bennett received emperor-level service from Sarah Miller and Emily Clark.

Not only was there piping hot dandelion tea to drink, but also shoulder massages. Only, Sarah Miller served Charles Bennett with seductive eyes, while Emily Clark just kneaded her brother's shoulders haphazardly.

"Did you win over your big Apo?" Ethan Brooks was very concerned about Charles Bennett's current status; only if his status was high could he truly protect these two women.

"Bi Su Teqin agreed to help me." Charles Bennett was somewhat proud.

"Are there any other difficulties?"

A cold glint flashed in Charles Bennett's eyes as he said in a low voice, "You know, Gelusa has eleven sons."

Ethan Brooks looked at Charles Bennett and said, "Six of them are under eight years old."

"That depends on whether Borun Khan will show mercy to Gelusa. After all, Bi Su Teqin is one of Borun Khan's sons."

Ethan Brooks frowned and said, "Since you belong to Bi Su Teqin, he can't just do nothing. Our branch of two hundred Huihe tents is a force to be reckoned with. If he wants to control these people without doing anything, there's no such good thing in the world."

Charles Bennett picked up the wooden bowl, took a sip of the bitter dandelion tea, and said in a low voice, "That's what I wanted to tell you. Tonight..."

Charles Bennett didn't finish his sentence and just kept his head down, drinking tea, as if he shouldn't say what was coming next.

Ethan Brooks turned and said to Sarah Miller, who was massaging Charles Bennett's shoulders, "Pack up the pelts. Tonight, I'm taking you to smoke marmots."

Charles Bennett asked in confusion, "Going to smoke marmots at night?"

Ethan Brooks nodded. "I'm afraid if we go late, the marmots won't be home."

"It's not what you think. We're going to kill the remaining sons of Gelusa, and his henchmen."

"Did Bi Su Teqin tell you this?"

Charles Bennett shook his head. "It was Kasorn who told me. He wants me to be ready tonight. If chaos breaks out, we should take the chance to kill all of Gelusa's sons."

"Chaos? What does that mean?"

"I don't know!"

Ethan Brooks stared into Charles Bennett's eyes for a long time before lowering his head and gazing at the fire in the hearth, remaining silent for a long while.

Charles Bennett left at some point. When he left, Ethan Brooks was still deep in thought, and only Sarah Miller followed him out.

The Huihe people say they are descendants of wolves, so now the Sairen have started saying they are descendants of wolves too.

Ethan Brooks didn't know whether reproductive isolation worked in this strange world, but the answer from the Huihe people was that it didn't.
