Chapter 2

Henry Clark's heart, longing for adventure, became incredibly excited.

“But, if I want to practice martial arts, I need to get some money first.”

Practicing martial arts is no joke—you need enough financial support. As the saying goes, “poor scholars, rich warriors.” For studying, all you need is paper, a pen, and books, but martial arts require much more: all kinds of supplements and medicine for injuries, things an ordinary family simply can’t afford.

Henry Clark walked out of the bedroom and headed toward the main hall.

“Sis, looks like that fool won’t make it through today.”

Before he even entered the hall, he heard a man’s voice coming from inside, which made Henry Clark feel a surge of disgust—this was a reaction from the original Henry Clark.

This person was David Miller... his future brother-in-law.

As the only son of William Clark, one of the nine great noble families of Dongyun City, Henry Clark had a reputation for being a fool, but he was still pursued by many beautiful women. His fiancée, Grace Miller, was indeed a beauty—ranked among the top five at “Qianfeng Academy,” with plenty of admirers.

But there’s never a shortage of beautiful women in the world; new faces always replace the old. The nine great noble families, however, have always remained just nine, standing high above the rest. Moreover, William Clark was in his prime, his cultivation still on the rise. Even though the original Henry Clark was disappointing, William Clark alone could hold things together for at least another forty or fifty years.

After so many years, the Chu family might even produce a powerful third generation to take up the mantle.

So Grace Miller went to great lengths to squeeze her way into the Chu family, and it just so happened that William Clark thought it would be good to have someone always looking after his son, so he let Grace Miller move into the Chu household as Henry Clark’s fiancée.

—It’s not that there weren’t better candidates than Henry Clark, but Grace Miller came from a small merchant family. In this world where social status matters, could she have married into any other noble family?

There are plenty of rich people in Dongyun City, as numerous as fish in the river, but there are only nine noble families. For this vain woman, Henry Clark was her only chance to step into high society.

Henry Clark paused. Now that William Clark was dead, everyone thought the Chu family was about to collapse—this was when people’s true colors showed.

“It’s just as well if he dies. At least I won’t have to bear the shame of breaking off the engagement. It’s a pity, though—I haven’t married into the Chu family yet, so I can’t get my hands on their fortune.” Another woman’s voice came from the hall, sweet and charming, but her words were truly venomous.

This was, of course, Grace Miller.

A woman’s image immediately surfaced in Henry Clark’s mind. The original Henry Clark had been very afraid of her—she seemed gentle, but there was a cruelty that came from deep within her bones. The original Henry Clark was just slow to react, not truly stupid. Besides, Grace Miller never bothered to put on an act in front of him. Naturally timid, he never dared complain to his father, even when wronged.

“Heh, over the past year, you’ve gotten quite a lot out of the Chu family, sis. Besides, you’re so beautiful—there are enough men wanting to marry you to line up for blocks. Just yesterday, the young master of the Ma family mentioned you again,” David Miller said.

The young master of the Ma family?

Henry Clark was momentarily stunned, then dug up a pile of information from his memories.

Come to think of it, the Chu and Ma families really were old rivals. Back when William Clark first came to Dongyun City, he and the Ma family’s young master of that generation, Edward Grant, both fell for the same woman. The outcome was obvious—William Clark won the beauty, who became Henry Clark’s mother.

After that, William Clark and Edward Grant competed for a noble title, and once again, William Clark came out on top.

Now, in Henry Clark’s generation, the new Ma family young master—Edward Grant’s son, John Grant—had also fallen for Grace Miller, but in the end, Grace Miller chose Henry Clark, who held a noble title.

  A grudge spanning two generations.

“Now that William Clark is dead, the Ma family is the most likely to inherit the noble title. Sis, maybe you should consider it—at the very least, don’t let him lose all hope,” David Miller continued.

“No rush. Let him wait a few days. Men are just like that—the longer they wait, the more obedient they become. Tell him to go east and he won’t dare go west,” Grace Miller said confidently.

She lumped all men together with one stroke. David Miller could only give a dry laugh and changed the subject: “William Clark really was stupid. He had a foolish son but still wanted to make him smart. In the end, he lost his own life, wasting all the effort you put in before, sis.”

“It’s a pity that fool is about to die. Otherwise, I’d have made him taste my methods. Making me serve him like a maid for a whole year—hmph, does a fool deserve that? Like a toad lusting after a swan,” Grace Miller said with utter disdain.

“Exactly, exactly,” David Miller quickly agreed. Though he was the older brother, he had no confidence in front of his sister.

Henry Clark sneered inwardly. Who’s the real toad here? Back then, it was Grace Miller who threw herself at him, and William Clark wanted someone to look after his son. Seeing how obedient Grace Miller was, he agreed to the marriage.

Now that William Clark was dead, her true nature was revealed.

  Enough!

“Who’s the real toad? You know it in your heart.” Henry Clark walked into the hall.

His sudden appearance startled the two inside—a man who was supposedly on the verge of death suddenly showing up full of life, who wouldn’t be shocked?

But the two quickly regained their composure.

William Clark was dead. So what if a fool came back to life?
