Chapter 17

Hearing a deep dweller say this, Nathaniel Carter almost felt like throwing up. Of course, he knew what the so-called “vegetable people” referred to—most likely Blue Star human flesh.

Forcing himself to suppress his discomfort, Nathaniel Carter made his ashen face look even worse and said, “I need to go adjust my breathing for a bit.”

The few young men didn’t insist, laughing heartily as they accompanied Nathaniel Carter further inside.

“We just had a fierce battle, and our army won a great victory!”

“We captured quite a few Blue Star people—this time the results are glorious!”

Listening to their discussion, Nathaniel Carter asked, “Do you know how the construction of our teleportation array is going? If it’s finished, once the main force arrives, we can crush the enemy in one fell swoop.”

“I heard more artifact forgers have been brought in, and the whole setup is going much faster now.”

“Really wish I could go take a look!” Nathaniel Carter said casually.

“Damn it, those people in the West Camp are guarding it tightly—they won’t let us see it at all. When we get back to the capital, just wait till I deal with them.”

West Camp?

Some information quickly surfaced in Nathaniel Carter’s memory, and he realized that the teleportation array was being set up right there in the West Camp of this military base.

After getting a sense of the situation, Nathaniel Carter felt a bit more at ease.

“Report to all captains: the general summons Captain Carter.”

A deep dweller soldier hurried over and called out loudly to them.

“Brother, you were missing for a while. Leaving the camp without permission this time—looks like you’re in trouble!”

“What’s there to be afraid of? The Wu family’s influence is right there. The general doesn’t have the guts to do anything to Edward Wright.”

These young men all looked like spoiled rich kids, not taking the general seriously at all.

Edward Wright knew this was a test for him—whether he could handle the general or not. After agreeing, he followed the soldier toward the general’s main tent at the center.

The soldiers here were even stronger. At a glance, Nathaniel Carter noticed that even the most ordinary soldiers here were at the third level of Qi Refining. The officers were even more powerful—he saw quite a few at the Foundation Establishment stage, and some were even close to the Golden Core stage.

After reporting in, Nathaniel Carter entered and immediately saw a Golden Core general sitting high above.

The entire tent was filled with a powerful aura. Every officer stood silently, and as Nathaniel Carter entered, several divine senses locked onto him completely.

At first, Nathaniel Carter felt a bit nervous, but after entering, he actually relaxed. So what if he died? It wasn’t such a big deal.

With his mind at ease, Nathaniel Carter appeared more casual.

What Nathaniel Carter himself didn’t realize was that this attitude happened to match the original Edward Wright’s demeanor, which actually lessened the others’ suspicion of him.

The general looked him up and down, a look of disdain flashing in his eyes, but it was gone in an instant.

When it came to the powerful Wu family in the capital, this general could only try to curry favor.

“Greetings, General!”

Because everyone in the army wore armor, they only performed a cupped-fist salute upon entering, no need to kneel. Nathaniel Carter cupped his hands in salute.

“You left the camp without permission. Do you know your crime?”

The general shouted in a deep voice.

With his shout, a powerful pressure swept over Nathaniel Carter.

“General, I left the camp to pursue Blue Star people. There were extenuating circumstances. I hope the general will forgive me.”

Imitating Edward Wright’s personality, Nathaniel Carter said this.

Looking Nathaniel Carter up and down, already knowing that most of Nathaniel Carter’s followers had been killed or wounded, the general was really just looking for a way to let him off. Seeing that Nathaniel Carter didn’t talk back like before, but instead asked for forgiveness, the general’s expression softened. He thought, “This kid lost a lot of people this time, probably got scared. That’s fine, gives me an out too.”

Thinking this, the general’s face turned serious. “What exactly happened?”

Nathaniel Carter recounted how he was leading a pursuit, was about to catch the Blue Star people, when suddenly a cultivator above Foundation Establishment appeared and killed his men. If he hadn’t used a magic treasure to escape, he would have been killed too.

Such things happened every day on this chaotic battlefield—nothing special. The general was just going through the motions.

“Considering you left to pursue Blue Star people, it’s understandable. Don’t let it happen again. Go rest.”

The general didn’t dare do anything to Edward Wright. After a few questions, he dismissed Edward Wright.

Leaving the tent, Nathaniel Carter actually felt a bit heavy-hearted and somewhat uneasy. He had thought Edward Wright was just from a minor noble family, but now it seemed that wasn’t the case. This kid’s family was strong—so strong that even a Golden Core general didn’t dare provoke them lightly.

Things were getting complicated!

Nathaniel Carter couldn’t help but feel some regret. Pretending to be a member of such a family had its pros and cons. If their experts showed up, who knew if he could keep up the act.

Thinking further that he was now inside the military camp and couldn’t even change identities if he wanted to, Nathaniel Carter felt even more uneasy.
