Chapter 17

If David Sutton is about 1.8 meters tall now, then John Adams is at least 1.84 meters.

He is somewhat overweight, but not bloated—he looks quite strong.

If you had to compare him to the John Adams from later film and television works, David Sutton feels that the Liang Guanhua version of John Adams seems to match the John Adams in front of him even more. He looks harmless, very gentle... Hmm, the Liang Guanhua version of John Adams should be what John Adams looked like in his later years after gaining weight, just a bit shorter.

"You are David Sutton?"

John Adams's voice snapped David Sutton back to attention.

He wasn't surprised that John Adams knew his name; even if his mother hadn't let it slip, John Adams could have found out.

You know, David Sutton is something of a celebrity in Chongde Lane.

Especially last year, when he almost died of illness in bed, and Madam Liu had to sell off their property for him—it became a hot topic for many people over tea. For a while, there were even rumors that he was possessed. But those rumors faded after he recovered and returned to work at the yamen. So, it was actually very easy to find out about him.

"I am David Sutton."

David Sutton took a deep breath and stepped aside to make way.

"My mother went out to buy groceries. She said when she left that you would be coming today.

The house was cleaned again yesterday, and my mother also had me prepare two sets of bedding for you. If you’re not used to them, you can bring your own. Oh, and my mother isn’t in good health and likes peace and quiet, so please don’t make too much noise at night."

After saying this, David Sutton turned and led John Adams and his companion into the courtyard.

"You have horses too?

That wasn’t mentioned before... The horses can be tied up in the stable. But the stable has been abandoned for several years and needs to be cleaned up. Also, let me be clear: my mother said the eighteen hundred coins cover your meals and laundry, but not taking care of your animals. The feed and cleaning of the stable are your responsibility—we won’t handle that."

David Sutton glanced at the two horses, feeling a bit envious.

His family used to have a horse too, and according to Madam Liu, it was a good one.

Later, his father took the horse with him when he accompanied Wang Xuance on a mission to India, and the stable has been empty ever since.

He had thought about buying a horse himself, but it was just a thought.

You know, even a draft horse in Chang’an is more than a family like his can afford. Not to mention, the two fine horses John Adams brought. He estimated that each of these horses would fetch at least forty or fifty strings of cash at the mule and horse market.

"Mr. Sutton is right, it was my oversight yesterday.

Leonard Grant, tie the horses at the gate for now, and later clean out the stable before bringing them in. But Mr. Sutton, we’re new here and not familiar with Chang’an, so we don’t know where to buy feed?"

"Feed? That depends on what quality you want."

"Of course, the best quality."

"Then I suggest you go to Zhao’s shop in Guiyi Lane, south of the city. Their feed is genuine, and they can customize it and deliver it to your door."

Zhao’s shop!

John Adams silently made a note of the name and thanked David Sutton again.

Then, David Sutton led them to the side room, opened the door, and let John Adams and his companion in, while he stood outside.

"You can tidy up yourselves. If you need help, just call me."

With that, David Sutton left.

"This guy, really, doesn’t he know how to help?"

Leonard Grant looked unhappy and muttered, "Sir, this fellow is so rude. Maybe we shouldn’t stay here."

"Leonard Grant, there you go again."

John Adams walked to the back window and pushed it open.

"Mr. Sutton isn’t wrong. We really didn’t mention the two horses yesterday.

Alright, bring in the luggage, you clean the stable, I’ll unpack, and let’s get everything settled. If we need anything, we’ll go buy it. Let’s try to get fully settled today—I need to prepare for my studies, classes start in a few days."

Leonard Grant kept muttering, but didn’t say anything more.

He left the room, went to the gate, and took the luggage off the horse.

The luggage was heavy, and Leonard Grant struggled with it.

Just then, David Sutton came over and said, "You’re such a big guy, how come you have no strength?"

"It’s all books my master needs for his studies—really heavy!

If you don’t believe me, try it yourself and see if you can lift it."

Leonard Grant put the luggage on the ground and retorted grumpily.

"Fine, I’ll try. I don’t believe it’s that heavy."

As he spoke, David Sutton stepped forward and picked up the luggage.

It really was heavy... If it had been yesterday, David Sutton would have thought it was quite a load, but today, it was nothing. Right in front of Leonard Grant, he easily carried the luggage inside, leaving Leonard Grant a bit dumbfounded.

This guy is pretty strong!

He muttered to himself, hoisted another piece of luggage, and struggled to follow David Sutton.

"Leonard Grant, how could you let Mr. Sutton do the heavy lifting?"

John Adams saw this and hurried over to help.
