Chapter 6

“This is the fifth lap, young master, two more to go!” Little White waved her fist, shouting slogans, which made Jason Foster's face darken. He scolded, “Is that how you speak to the young master!”

“Mr. Foster.” After seeing Jason Foster, Little White became a bit timid. She bowed, glancing at the panting William Foster from the corner of her eye.

When William Foster ran over, Jason Foster hurriedly stopped him, saying with concern, “Young master! You’ve only just woken up, you need to take care of yourself! How about I go to the city and buy you some ginseng? Have the kitchen stew an old hen for you, I guarantee you’ll be full of energy. But this… let’s not tire yourself out like this!”

In Jason Foster’s view, his young master was a literary star, how could he run around like those martial men!

William Foster was at his limit too. He felt that this body was only just beginning to recover, and daily exercise would be essential from now on.

After catching his breath, William Foster waved his hand and said, “You don’t understand, life is about movement. If I just lie around every day, I’ll end up weak sooner or later!”

Ignoring Jason Foster’s earnest advice, William Foster wiped his face and then asked, “That Miss Zhang is all alone now?”

“She is.” Speaking of Grace Bolton, even Jason Foster looked full of admiration and gratitude. He said, “Young master, Miss Zhang really risked everything for you. Do you think maybe…”

“Pick a date!” William Foster staggered inside, then called Little White to help tidy up his things.

“Pick a date?” Jason Foster was stunned at first, then his face lit up with joy, tears streaming down as he muttered in the courtyard, “Master, the young master finally knows what it is to love. I… I’m so happy!”

After William Foster counted his assets and dejectedly found he only had fifty-three taels, he came out to see Jason Foster in tears.

Seeing William Foster come out, Jason Foster rushed over and said, “Young master, I’ll pick an auspicious day soon. Anyway, the Zhang family has disowned Miss Zhang, so we can skip all those complicated rituals and just bring her straight in.”

William Foster looked at Jason Foster, and in the end, both of them felt a bit awkward.

It was rather pitiful, really. After Henry Foster was convicted and lost his position, all the Fang family’s relatives disappeared, and now the family was run by the young William Foster, who had been in a stupor for three years.

As the saying goes, if you don’t keep in touch for three years, even friends become strangers. So it wasn’t just a problem with Grace Bolton, but that there wouldn’t be any guests at the wedding at all.

But then William Foster thought it over and said, “Such a good lady, even if it’s simple now, I’ll make it up to her in the future.”

“Alright! I’ll go find someone to pick an auspicious date.” Seeing his young master able to bend and adapt, Jason Foster was deeply gratified and trotted off happily.

“Come on, let’s go see Miss Zhang.” After a breakfast that William Foster found unsatisfying, he frowned and took Little White out with him.

What a pity there were no servants! William Foster felt regretful—if only he could leave the house with two big men following behind, that would be truly impressive.

When they reached the three small rooms, William Foster actually saw a maid drawing water.

“This was arranged by the steward. Since Miss Zhang is still your fiancée, she shouldn’t be neglected.” Little White thought Mr. Foster was truly wise and capable.

“Good!” William Foster folded his fan and, ignoring the maid’s anxious gaze, entered the main room.

Inside, Grace Bolton was writing. When she saw William Foster come in, she stood up and saluted, then frowned and invited William Foster to sit.

“Young master, you haven’t married yet, this isn’t proper!” Little White whispered in William Foster’s ear, explaining the reason for Grace Bolton’s frown.

Oh! So she’s still a victim of feudal etiquette! William Foster cleared his throat and lowered his eyes, saying, “I was being presumptuous.”

Grace Bolton was only seventeen—just a naïve girl by modern standards, but here, she had already spent three years alone as a mature woman.

William Foster glanced at the shy, downcast girl, then stood up and said, “I just came to see you. The steward is already picking a date. When the time comes… ahem!”

The rest of his words were cut off by the blush on Grace Bolton’s face. William Foster said awkwardly, “Then I’ll take my leave.”

Just as he reached the door, William Foster remembered something and turned back to ask, “Yesterday’s beef… and pork, did you like it?”

“It was good.” She still kept her head down, but the blush on her face faded a little.

“That’s good.” William Foster chuckled awkwardly. “I still have plenty of things. I’ll have someone bring them to you later.”

Grace Bolton said softly, “Ever since I was cast out of my clan, I have belonged to you, young master. Everything is up to you.”

Damn! William Foster floated out of the small house, and after walking some distance, he asked Little White, “Little White, when Miss Zhang came, did she bring anything with her?”

“She didn’t.” Little White replied admiringly, “At the time, Miss Zhang was just wearing plain clothes. She was showing filial piety to the old master!”

After returning, William Foster found an excuse to send Little White away, and then disappeared from where he stood.

The warehouse was unchanged, the cup of coffee in the office was still steaming, everything was just as before. It was as if time had lost its meaning here.
