Chad Sullivan said, “Mr. Carter, you must quickly send troops to Moonlight Temple. The sooner, the better—if we’re late, it’ll be too late.”
David Carter said, “Moonlight Temple holds a transcendent status. With no evidence, even my Nightwatch Division dares not offend them.”
Chad Sullivan said, “Emily Parker is the Prefect’s younger sister. Someone actually dared to attempt her murder—there must be a huge, unspeakable conspiracy behind this. It could even harm the interests of the Empire. We need to act fast; if we’re late, it’ll be too late.”
Chad Sullivan knew that his own life was worthless in the eyes of these powerful people—no one would care about his innocence. So he had to make this case as big as possible—the bigger, the better.
David Carter closed his eyes and fell silent for a long time, hesitating.
After a full minute, he opened his eyes and said, “Fine, to Moonlight Temple!”
……
………
………
Chad Sullivan was easily taken out of the death cell by David Carter, but he was still shackled and kept inside a carriage.
David Carter led dozens of Nightwatch Division warriors toward Moonlight Temple.
Moonlight Temple was located deep in a mountain valley, on the shady side, giving it a gloomy and eerie atmosphere.
It was originally a temple, once bustling with incense and worshippers, with hundreds of monks at its peak.
Twenty years ago, a terrible plague broke out in the temple, killing all the monks. It became a haunted place, and no one dared approach.
Thirteen years ago, a group of alchemists came to Yingzhou and chose Moonlight Temple as their base, moving in to conduct various research and experiments.
Since then, Moonlight Temple had become even more mysterious and terrifying.
When they arrived at the entrance of Moonlight Temple, even though the sun was shining brightly outside, the temple nestled between the mountain valleys remained gloomy and gray.
David Carter approached the entrance, bowed, and said, “Master of the Temple, Nightwatchman David Carter is here to pay his respects.”
“What business brings you here?”
David Carter said, “There has been a murder case involving Moonlight Temple. The killer may be hiding within these walls.”
A moment later, the gates of Moonlight Temple opened, and a middle-aged man stepped out, dressed in a black robe and wearing a mask that revealed only his eyes. He was likely one of the temple’s alchemists.
David Carter asked, “May I ask your esteemed name, Master?”
The black-robed alchemist replied, “Charles Parker.”
Then, the black-robed alchemist said, “Mr. Carter, our Moonlight Temple is directly under the Astronomical Pavilion, noble and reclusive.
You claim we are involved in a murder case. If you don’t give us an explanation, you shouldn’t expect to leave today.”
The tone of the black-robed alchemist Charles Parker was very calm, but it carried immense confidence.
Others might fear the Nightwatchmen, but Moonlight Temple did not.
Moments later, one after another, silver-robed warriors silently rushed out from within Moonlight Temple.
Hundreds of them surrounded Chad Sullivan, David Carter, and the dozens of Nightwatchmen so tightly that not even water could pass through.
And that wasn’t all.
A large, dark opening appeared on the massive walls of Moonlight Temple, and several cannons were rolled out.
This was outrageous—even cannons!
And not just cannons—there were other weapons that Chad Sullivan didn’t recognize at all.
Moonlight Temple was truly formidable—no wonder no one wanted to provoke them.
It seemed that if they didn’t provide an explanation today, neither David Carter nor Chad Sullivan would be leaving.
David Carter beckoned to Chad Sullivan and said, “Young Master Sullivan, it’s up to you now.
If things aren’t as you say, it’s a small matter if I can’t leave, but your corpse will probably be left here for Moonlight Temple to experiment on.”
Next, a few Nightwatchmen unlocked Chad Sullivan’s shackles.
Chad Sullivan stepped forward and came before the alchemist Charles Parker.
Charles Parker said, “So it was you who claimed that my Moonlight Temple is involved in a murder case?
Accusing someone from my temple of murder?”
Chad Sullivan said, “Yes.”
Charles Parker asked, “Who was killed?”
Chad Sullivan replied, “The Prefect’s younger sister, Deputy Commander of the Yingzhou Navy, Emily Parker.”
Charles Parker said, “Evidence.”
Chad Sullivan said, “Master Charles Parker, I’ve heard that Moonlight Temple has developed a miraculous medicine—one that can cure terminal tuberculosis and, in milder cases, treat lung diseases. Is that correct?”
Alchemist Charles Parker said, “That is a top secret of Moonlight Temple. We have just reported it to His Majesty the Emperor. How did you find out?”
Chad Sullivan asked, “May I confirm if this is true?”
Alchemist Charles Parker said, “It is true. Our Moonlight Temple has developed the miraculous medicine Moonlight Powder, which can cure terminal illnesses and save countless lives—a boundless merit. The entire court is abuzz, and His Majesty is overjoyed and about to issue an imperial commendation.
But what does this have to do with the death of Emily Parker?”
Chad Sullivan said, “Master Charles Parker, if I’m not mistaken, the miraculous medicine developed by Moonlight Temple comes in several types. The most precious can cure tuberculosis.
The ordinary kind can treat lung diseases, correct?”
Alchemist Charles Parker said, “Correct. The red Moonlight Powder treats tuberculosis; the white Moonlight Powder treats lung diseases.”
Damn, that’s impressive.
They’ve even managed to develop streptomycin for tuberculosis—how is a transmigrator supposed to compete with that?
Chad Sullivan looked at the hundreds of silver-robed warriors surrounding them and said slowly, “Let Master Charles Parker know: the white Moonlight Powder is incompatible with alcohol. If you drink after taking the white Moonlight Powder, you will die suddenly.”
As soon as he said this, alchemist Charles Parker’s expression changed, and he flew into a rage.
According to Chad Sullivan’s deduction, this white Moonlight Powder was actually cephalosporin.
