Wearing a baggy tracksuit with the words “Shimen No.1 High School” written across the chest, it was obvious that it was a school uniform. As for her sneakers, they were so dirty they were barely recognizable.
She wasn’t short, but she was so thin she looked like a stick—one felt that a stronger wind could blow her over.
All in all, this girl’s appearance was truly quite pitiful.
Nodding at the girl, Henry Clark said gently, “Don’t be afraid, I absolutely won’t hurt you. Besides, you can barely stand right now—you must be starving, right? In your condition, I could knock you to the ground with a single stick, and then do whatever I wanted, isn’t that so? And I also know there’s no one else around here, otherwise you wouldn’t be acting like this. So don’t even think about scaring me off. Let’s calm down and have a proper talk, okay?”
Knowing she couldn’t scare Henry Clark, and aware of her own weakness, after a brief moment of thought, the girl suddenly bit her lip, and tears began to fall, one after another.
“Uncle, I’m still a child…”
Henry Clark hurriedly said, “Stop! Enough, don’t cry, you’re not allowed to cry!”
A low and irritated shout temporarily startled the little girl. Henry Clark, looking helpless and annoyed, said, “Do I really look that much like a bad guy?”
“You do…”
The girl’s answer left Henry Clark at a loss. Then he remembered something, so he unzipped his waist pouch, took out a small mirror from his PSK pouch, and walked toward the girl, saying, “Come on, here, take a look at yourself in the mirror.”
Henry Clark’s action was odd. The little girl hesitated for a moment, but in the end, she neither resisted nor ran away. Holding a kitchen knife in one hand, she reached out from a distance to take the small mirror Henry Clark handed her.
She only glanced at it, and immediately let out a terrified scream and put the mirror down. But soon, she couldn’t help but pick it up and look again.
“Even if you don’t believe I’m a good person, if you have any self-awareness, you should know I definitely don’t want to do anything to you, right?”
The girl suddenly put down the mirror and glared fiercely at Henry Clark.
Spreading his hands, Henry Clark said helplessly, “I don’t mean anything else, I just want to tell you that you really don’t need to worry about me doing anything bad. I’m just excited and happy to meet another living person. You know what things are like now—do you really only feel fear when you see me?”
Henry Clark was indeed sincere. After a moment, the girl said softly, “Why do you carry a mirror with you?”
“It’s a survival mirror. If you’re in danger somewhere with no one around, you can use it to reflect sunlight and signal for help.”
Finally, a line of conversation that wasn’t so hostile.
Henry Clark longed to meet another person, and as a fellow survivor, so did the girl. So the two of them began to look at each other, but soon, the girl’s gaze dropped to the wild boar on the ground.
“That wild boar is huge, but, um…”
That look in her eyes—it was like she was staring at her dearest lover, or rather… there was no need to describe it. It was simply the look of someone starving at the sight of food.
A starving person is truly capable of anything. Although there was no need to be overly worried, Henry Clark still didn’t dare to let his guard down.
“What do you want to say? Are you starving?”
The little girl looked up, her face pleading. “Can you give me the pig’s ears and tail? Anywhere is fine, I just want those. I really… I’m about to starve to death.”
The pleading look on the girl’s face made Henry Clark feel rather uncomfortable. He sighed and said softly, “Put the knife down. If I wanted to hurt you, would I bother saying all this? Are you really that hungry?”
The girl looked at Henry Clark with a complicated expression and said quietly, “Isn’t it obvious enough?”
Of course it was obvious.
Henry Clark stopped talking. He put the half spear on the ground, took off his backpack, and pulled out a can of luncheon meat from it.
A can of luncheon meat?
A can of luncheon meat!
The little girl’s eyes went wide.
When Henry Clark put his finger on the pull tab of the can, the girl couldn’t help but take a step forward.
When the lid popped open, it made a soft “pop” sound.
And upon hearing that sound, the kitchen knife in the girl’s hand fell to the ground with a crisp clang.
The little girl stared fixedly at the luncheon meat. Henry Clark was certain that if he put the meat in his own mouth right now, the girl would definitely fight him for it.
No more pointless talk—at this moment, nothing was more effective than food.
Holding up the can of luncheon meat, Henry Clark said solemnly, “Come with me. If you come with me, there’s food.”
“Mm, okay, okay.”
“Really, come with me. I mean no harm, I just… I’m too lonely. I just want someone to keep me company.”
“Okay, just give me the can first.”
Henry Clark took a step forward and handed the can of meat to the little girl. She caught it, knocked the can from her right hand onto her left, then cradled the big chunk of luncheon meat in her left hand and took a bite.
