“What’s wrong, my little boss? Why did you suddenly go quiet?” Grace Bennett put extra emphasis on the word “little,” looking at Jason Carter with a playful glint in her eyes.
“Nothing, just remembered some things from the past.”
Grace Bennett was slightly taken aback; that calm tone actually sent a chill down her spine. Although she didn’t think this man, whose combat power barely reached 20, could pose any threat to her, the intuition for danger she’d honed from years of skirting the edge of life and death rarely lied.
Grace Bennett wisely shut her mouth.
There was no need to offend a free meal ticket. Being able to eat her fill every day—this was something Miss Grace Bennett had never even dreamed of before. The taste of that curry chicken was simply amazing; it was the first time she’d discovered such delicious food existed in this world. On this wasteland, just having a piece of steamed bun to gnaw on was already a blessing. Oh no, most people still relied on nutrient paste to stave off hunger. That stuff never filled you up, but at least it wouldn’t let you starve.
Besides, this not-so-mature boss seemed like a good person…
Don’t get it wrong—“good person” was definitely a derogatory term on the wasteland. But for some reason, even though that was the case, compared to the “normal people” everywhere on the wasteland, she still preferred to be around this “Mr. Goody Two-Shoes.” At least she didn’t have to worry about waking up to find herself tied up like a dumpling.
Thinking of this, a faint smile unconsciously curved Grace Bennett’s somewhat dry red lips.
“Hey, do you have to smile so creepily…” For some reason, even though the smile on Grace Bennett’s face was beautiful, it still sent a shiver down Jason Carter’s spine.
“Do I? Don’t you think your big sister’s smile is charming?”
“Should I say yes, or no…” Staring at that stunning face, Jason Carter swallowed and muttered under his breath.
Chapter 3: I Need Gold
The next morning, Grace Bennett was sent by Jason Carter to explore the commercial bank building in Qingpu. When Grace Bennett questioned what there was to investigate at a bank, Jason Carter simply gave a straightforward answer.
“I need the gold there.”
This world was full of treasures—any one of those high-tech civilian devices, if brought back to the real world, would probably blow away anything still stuck in the lab. However, it was obviously unrealistic to just take these high-tech products and sell them in the real world. In that case, the only things that were valuable and easy to cash in were gold!
Jason Carter guessed that in this post-apocalyptic world with no order, gold probably had no value at all. When everyone was starving, no one would trade their food for those shiny things.
Clearly, he was right.
Grace Bennett was quite curious about what use gold could be, but Jason Carter obviously had no intention of revealing anything, so she had to give up on asking.
There was also a little incident in the morning.
After getting up, when Jason Carter handed a piece of bread to Grace Bennett, she snatched it up quickly and stared at Jason Carter with a very wary look in her eyes.
“Alright, what are you up to?”
“Up to? Didn’t you say I should feed you?” Jason Carter rolled his eyes at her. What a joke—I’m not so desperate that I’d want to sleep with you. If I had money, I’d go back to the modern world and sleep with ten models, wouldn’t I? Anyone willing to get in bed with a tigress who might bite off his manhood at any moment must have something wrong with his head.
“Feed me?” Grace Bennett didn’t react for a moment, but then suddenly remembered the payment they’d agreed on yesterday.
“Breakfast. Three meals a day, though you’ll probably have to eat lunch outside, so I’ll give you a can of food.” Even though his backpack had been rummaged through by this woman, there was still some backup food in his storage space. With his current energy, he could still take out a can or two.
Grace Bennett froze, her eyes inexplicably growing a little hot. She’d seen plenty of scoundrels on the wasteland who killed their own kind for food, and had even run into cannibal bandits who wanted to cook her into stew, but this was the first time she’d met someone who worried about her going hungry…
She grabbed the can, her gaze flickering as she looked away. Honestly, she’d even considered robbing this guy blind and then taking him hostage to trade for food from his “companions.”
Even though that thought had only flashed through her mind, it had existed—and now it filled her with a strong sense of guilt.
“Breakfast… what’s that supposed to be?” Grace Bennett mumbled through a mouthful of bread, her words muffled.
She looked a bit rough, but watching a beautiful woman wolf down her food was a unique kind of enjoyment.
“Skipping breakfast is bad for your stomach,” Jason Carter muttered, almost forgetting that this was the apocalypse, where most people didn’t know if they’d have another meal. “Ahem, anyway, eating something in the morning will give you more energy.”
“Th-thank… you…”
“What?” Jason Carter couldn’t hear what she said because her voice was so soft.
