Chapter 13

Killing the robbers and then looting all their belongings in return is indeed a case of fighting evil with evil. Moreover, so-called martial artists—even those who claim to be righteous—are, in reality, not much different from what would later be called gang members. So, William Clark's definition of Emily Carter's actions isn't really wrong.

On top of that, the two of them are in such dire financial straits that if they don't want to go hungry and cold in the coming days, they need to quickly find some money. Now that money has come knocking at their door, there's no reason not to take it.

But what was strange was that William Clark kept finding copper coins on the ground, which puzzled him. He couldn't figure out how so many coins had ended up scattered during a fight.

Soon, he remembered that during the fight, Emily Carter had suddenly thrown out a handful of shiny yellow objects. At the time, her movements were so quick and he was more focused on everyone's hands, so he hadn't really paid attention to what Emily Carter had tossed.

"Could it have been copper coins she threw?"

As he made this guess, William Clark began picking up the copper coins from the ground one by one. He also noticed that his junior sister, after looting the corpses nearby, was indeed searching the ground with her head down, occasionally picking up a coin and carefully putting it away.

"Junior sister, your move 'Heaven and Earth Toss' was executed perfectly!"

Maybe it was because the atmosphere was too tense, or maybe it was just that the two of them weren't talking while surrounded by corpses, but William Clark felt uncomfortable. So he cracked a joke to lighten the mood, and also to steady his own hands, which had started to tremble—a reaction that only set in after the killing, not during it. Oddly enough, he hadn't felt anything while fighting, but started to feel uneasy when it came time to search the bodies.

"'Heaven and Earth Toss'?"

Emily Carter had no idea what this so-called legendary technique was, but the name sounded impressive. "Which sect's secret art is that? Why have I never heard of it?"

"Uh..." William Clark hesitated, then could only make something up: "This 'Heaven and Earth Toss' is indeed a secret art, but it doesn't belong to any sect. The technique is actually very simple and straightforward—basically, anyone can master it. There's just one requirement!"

"Oh? What requirement?" As soon as martial arts were mentioned, Emily Carter stopped worrying about the origins of her senior brother's strange swordsmanship and became curious about what kind of technique this universally accessible secret art could be.

"You need money!"

"Money?" Emily Carter was puzzled at first, but when she remembered the copper coins in her hand, she recalled how, during the fight, she had thrown out a handful of coins to distract the enemy.

In fact, she had glanced over at her senior brother during the fight and happened to see him kick up a cloud of dust to block the enemy's vision and seize the chance to attack. In that instant, she thought that if she wanted to kill quickly, this method was pretty good.

But she didn't have any dirt handy, nor could she just squat down in the middle of a fight, so in a moment of desperation, she threw out a handful of copper coins she had on her. She hadn't really thought much about it at the time. Afterwards, she actually felt that this move wasn't very honorable, especially since she had copied it from her senior brother, whom she didn't think much of.

Now, hearing William Clark bring it up, she thought he was mocking her, and her expression changed immediately: "It's still more proper than the sect leader senior brother's dirty trick of throwing dirt in people's eyes!"

With that, she ignored William Clark and focused on looting the bodies. William Clark, a bit baffled by Emily Carter's glare, saw that she didn't want to talk and, not being one to seek out a scolding, fell silent and concentrated on searching the corpses.

Eight people left behind eight corpses. Except for the two killed by William Clark with a throat cut—whose bodies were covered in blood and risked staining him—the rest were easy to handle. Soon, the two of them had turned out everything of value from the eight bodies.

Other than the clothes on their backs, there was nothing else left on them.

"Eighteen taels of broken silver in total, and over a hundred copper coins! Not bad!" Having no real concept of the purchasing power of money in this world, William Clark could only judge from Emily Carter's gradually brightening expression that this was quite a windfall.

In addition, he also found some notices on a few of the bodies. He hadn't paid much attention to them at first, but now, by the firelight, he could take a good look. The corpses had been tossed into a corner, the fire had been rekindled, and the two of them were preparing to rest before burying the bodies—after all, killing people was a crime against the law, not something to be advertised.

But the notices William Clark found actually saved them the trouble...

"Wanted posters?" As soon as Emily Carter saw the papers, she recognized what they were. After grabbing them and taking a closer look, she burst out laughing: "Who would've thought these guys were actually notorious bandits in this area, and are currently wanted by the authorities!"
