Chapter 2

In the Science and Education Department, Linda Foster looked at Brian Bolton, her face full of exasperation at his lack of progress. She couldn’t help but reach out and give Brian Bolton a hard poke on the forehead with her finger: “You little rascal, what am I supposed to do with you?”

Brian Bolton was utterly astonished by her sudden gesture. In the past, only women of ill repute in brothels would act so wantonly, but this Linda Foster was a plain-looking, middle-aged woman with no charm to speak of—no matter how you looked at her, she didn’t seem like that kind of person. Could it be that she was moved by his good looks and had ulterior motives? Brian Bolton had roamed the underworld for years and seen all kinds of people. He took a step back and said solemnly, “Men and women should keep their distance. Please, sister-in-law, have some self-respect!”

Linda Foster was both annoyed and amused by his pretentious words. She grabbed a magazine from the table and smacked Brian Bolton on the head with it: “You little rascal, you really need a beating every three days or you’ll turn the house upside down! Do you believe I’ll tell your father about what happened today?”

Hearing this made Brian Bolton even more uneasy. He had been an orphan since childhood—how could this woman threaten to complain to his father? He sighed and said, “My father passed away many years ago.” Linda Foster was well aware of Ryan Bolton’s family situation. She knew his father had died when he was one, and his mother had remarried, bringing him along as a burden to her new husband. Ryan Bolton’s stepfather already had two sons and a daughter of his own, so he had always been biased in how he treated the children. Ryan Bolton had been beaten often since he was little. Thinking of Ryan Bolton’s pitiful background, Linda Foster couldn’t help but sigh: “Ryan Bolton, it wasn’t easy for you to get into nursing school. For a nursing student, getting an internship at a county hospital is quite an achievement.” She was subtly reminding Ryan Bolton to cherish what he had now, and also hinting that she had helped him a lot in securing his internship at the county hospital.

With both hands tucked into his large pockets, Brian Bolton secretly pinched himself twice. He could clearly feel the pain, so his mind wasn’t muddled—he was almost certainly alive. In his understanding, the dead shouldn’t feel anything. Still, he had some doubts; everything before his eyes was so unfamiliar. In his memory, neither the Sui Dynasty nor Goguryeo or the Turks dressed like this. He cautiously asked, “May I ask, sister-in-law, am I dead?”

Linda Foster shook her head helplessly and reached out her right hand to feel his forehead. “You don’t have a fever. What’s wrong with you today? Why are you talking such nonsense?”

Suddenly, Brian Bolton thought of the idea of reincarnation. Maybe heaven had seen his grievances and generously given him a second chance at life. Since he was here, he might as well make the best of it. As long as he could survive, how bad could things get?

Linda Foster couldn’t bear to scold this pitiful boy too harshly. After a few words of admonishment, she began to lecture him earnestly, then personally escorted Brian Bolton to the conference room. Unfortunately, the lecture had already ended, and Grace Carter had already left, so there was no way to apologize to her.

As an old neighbor, Linda Foster was quite responsible. She took Brian Bolton to the gynecology outpatient clinic, where they found the deputy director, Grace Carter, who was seeing patients at the specialist clinic. Outside the department, Linda Foster gave him a few more reminders. Brian Bolton was gradually coming to terms with reality. He knew that if he spoke, he might cause trouble, so he simply kept his mouth shut and nodded obediently to show his compliance with Linda Foster.

It was already four in the afternoon. There were no patients at the gynecology clinic for the moment, only five interns gathered around Associate Dean Carter, listening attentively to her guidance. It was clear that Grace Carter enjoyed playing the role of teacher. Although she didn’t smile, she patiently and gently explained each student’s questions, showing a real dedication to teaching.

In fact, she had already noticed the arrival of Linda Foster and Brian Bolton, but she didn’t take the initiative to greet Linda Foster. As soon as the lecture ended, someone had eagerly told her that Linda Foster and Ryan Bolton were old neighbors. Grace Carter immediately understood that this matter would likely be dropped. After all, as colleagues in the same workplace, some face had to be saved. Still, this Ryan Bolton kid was really a piece of work, causing trouble at a public lecture.

“Dean Carter!” Linda Foster always spoke with a sweet smile on her face. She was famous in the hospital for her good relationships. As the head of the Science and Education Department, being too good-natured wasn’t necessarily a good thing, because Director Foster’s easygoing attitude had led to interns in the hospital becoming increasingly undisciplined. Grace Carter had already decided that she would bring up this issue at the hospital’s weekly meeting and give Linda Foster a good talking-to.

“Xiao Yuan! What is it?” Although she was a deputy director, Grace Carter could still put on an air of authority whenever she wanted.

Linda Foster smiled even more brightly. “I’ve brought Ryan Bolton here to apologize to you. I gave him a good talking-to in the Science and Education Department just now, and Ryan Bolton has realized his mistake. See, he’s volunteered to apologize to you in person.” She gave Brian Bolton a discreet push from behind.

Brian Bolton immediately understood, walked up to Associate Dean Carter, and said sincerely, “Dean Carter, I was wrong!”
