Chapter 13

"Matthew junior brother, where are you going?" Daniel walked into the chores courtyard, just in time to see Eric Bennett and Ethan holding brooms, preparing to go out. It was right after lunch.

Eric Bennett answered a bit excitedly, "William uncle assigned us to clean the Sutra Pavilion."

Speaking of this, Eric Bennett felt an unexpected surprise. After lunch, William had instructed him and Ethan to clean the Sutra Pavilion, and said that from now on, the place would be under their care.

Although William made it clear that they were only responsible for the lower two floors where the Buddhist scriptures were kept, and the upper floors would be cleaned by senior monks, Eric Bennett still couldn't help but feel excited. The Sutra Pavilion! The legendary Sutra Pavilion that was said to house the seventy-two ultimate skills of Shaolin! In so many martial arts and fantasy stories, it's the place where people have fateful encounters!

"I wonder if 'Buddha's Palm', 'Muscle/Tendon Changing Classic', 'Mahākāla Demon-Subduing Fist', or 'Great Dream Sutra' are in the Sutra Pavilion..." Eric Bennett thought, lost in his imagination.

"Sutra Pavilion?" Daniel raised his eyebrows, then grinned, showing a row of white teeth. "Matthew junior brother, it just so happens that the Martial Monk Courtyard doesn't practice boxing until after noon. Why don't I go with you to the Sutra Pavilion and help you clean up? Heh, to be honest, I'm also very curious about that place."

"But..." Eric Bennett was worried this might violate the monastic rules.

Daniel smiled brightly and said, "Don't worry, all monks in the temple are free to enter and exit the lower two floors of the Sutra Pavilion. I just usually don't have the time. If you don't believe me, you can ask William uncle."

As soon as he finished speaking, Ethan darted into William's meditation room, leaving Daniel a bit stunned.

Eric Bennett gave an awkward laugh, "That's just how Ethan is—so serious about everything."

"As he should be, as he should be," Daniel said with a laugh.

These days, he often came to the chores courtyard to ask Eric Bennett about reading and punctuation, and often helped him and Ethan with odd jobs. He was quite forthright and good at talking.

"William uncle said Daniel senior brother is right," Ethan ran out and said loudly.

"Then let's go," Daniel chuckled.

The Sutra Pavilion was located atop a cliff behind Shaolin Temple, a four-story old building standing alone and lofty, so prominent that even birds flying near would be easily spotted.

After entering the Sutra Pavilion, Eric Bennett poured himself a cup of plain water at the table and drank it in one gulp. The journey was really long, and the autumn heat was especially fierce—it was enough to make him die of thirst!

Meanwhile, Ethan walked over to the bookshelf where the Buddhist scriptures were kept, pulling out one after another and flipping through them carefully.

"Hey, Ethan junior brother, what are you doing? Do you like reading Buddhist scriptures?" Daniel asked, amused and puzzled.

Eric Bennett also didn't understand what Ethan was doing. He poured himself another cup of water, drinking as he watched.

Ethan's expression was very serious, with a hint of hope: "There might be peerless martial arts written in the gaps between the scriptures."

Pfft! Eric Bennett spat out a mouthful of water, spraying it all over Daniel's head and face. Was this guy deeply poisoned by martial arts fantasy stories? Or did he trust him so much that he believed whatever he said?

Daniel wiped his face in confusion and looked at Eric Bennett, "Matthew junior brother, what's so funny? What Ethan said isn't impossible."

"Yeah, and it was senior brother who secretly told me!" Ethan continued flipping through the books with unusual seriousness.

"Heh." Eric Bennett could only respond like this, then put away his comical mood and said, "Little junior brother, don't rush. We'll be coming here every day anyway. Let's clean up first, or we'll get punished."

Hearing his most trusted senior brother say this, Ethan immediately put down the scriptures and joined Eric Bennett and Daniel in cleaning the Sutra Pavilion.

By three-quarters past noon, the cleaning was almost done. Just as Eric Bennett was about to "flip through" the scriptures, Daniel suddenly clutched his stomach and said urgently, "Ah, junior brothers, nature calls! I'll go relieve myself first."

As he spoke, he dashed to the stairway, his footsteps thudding as he disappeared from Eric Bennett and Ethan's sight.

Eric Bennett didn't pay much attention, and called Ethan over to carefully sort the Buddhist scriptures by category, to see if there was anything worth noting.

After about a quarter of an hour, Daniel returned, clutching his stomach and looking pale.

"Daniel senior brother, are you alright?" Eric Bennett asked with concern.

Daniel shook his head, "I think I ate something bad."

He then imitated Eric Bennett and Ethan, slowly browsing the book titles in front of the bookshelf. Suddenly, he chuckled, "There's actually an 'Arhat Fist' manual here."

"Arhat Fist? Isn't that the boxing technique you seniors usually practice?" Eric Bennett quickly craned his neck to look.

Daniel pulled out the book and handed it to Eric Bennett, "Yeah, I thought it would be upstairs. Didn't expect it to be on this floor."

Eric Bennett took it, greedily flipping through, wanting to memorize all its contents.

"Heh heh, Matthew junior brother, do you want your senior brother to give you some pointers?" Daniel said with a grin.

Eric Bennett was delighted, but still a bit uneasy, "Is... is that allowed?"

Learning martial arts without permission was against temple rules!

Ethan also widened his clear black-and-white eyes, looking at Daniel with barely contained excitement.

Daniel pointed at the manual, "Since the manual is placed in an area where all monks can freely enter and borrow, it means this is a foundational skill open to everyone. It doesn't count as breaking the rules."
