Chapter 7

According to the markings on the map, right behind the gate from which the undying undead had just burst out, there should be an important storage room. Although he hesitated for a moment, Adam Bennett still stepped forward, only this time he was even more cautious than before.

During the previous battle, Adam Bennett had tested the power of the magical lightsaber. Although, thanks to his uncle’s training since childhood, he was equally adept at wielding weapons with both hands, he still put away his longsword. Freeing up one hand allowed him to maintain his balance more perfectly.

With both hands pressed down on the hilt of the magical lightsaber, Adam Bennett took every step with extreme caution. However, his caution seemed somewhat unnecessary. Behind that iron door, there were indeed many dangerous traps, but they had all been destroyed. Clearly, among that group of adventurers, there were some truly skilled experts.

It wasn’t until he walked through the long corridor that Adam Bennett finally let out a sigh of relief, because he saw the trap that, in the end, had claimed the lives of all the adventurers—a deadly poisonous gem. This kind of poisonous gem is usually placed above a basin of water, supported by a thin pillar. At the slightest touch, it would fall into the basin below. As soon as it comes into contact with water, the poisonous gem releases a toxic vapor. Any adventurer who is even slightly careless would have no chance of survival in such a situation.

However, that poisonous gem had clearly already served its purpose, now lying quietly at the bottom of a tall bronze basin, emitting a faint green glow, though its toxins had long since evaporated.

This poisonous gem was the last line of defense. Beyond it was only an ancient stone door. Adam Bennett unceremoniously jabbed the magical lightsaber at the stone door. The blazing sword light clearly damaged the mechanism of the ancient stone door. When he then kicked it, the ancient stone door, already cracked by the magical lightsaber, instantly shattered into pieces.

This was a storeroom, two hundred and fifty paces long and forty paces wide from north to south, and at least as tall as seven Adam Bennetts stacked on top of each other. On both sides of the storeroom were recesses built from blue bricks, more than half of which were empty. In the remaining ones, dozens of mechanical warriors were placed, seemingly untouched by the ravages of time.

This discovery first startled Adam Bennett, but when he realized these mechanical warriors were simply lying quietly in the wall recesses and had not been activated, he wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and carefully examined these antiques, which must have belonged to a millennium ago.

These mechanical warriors were the same model as the one he had just encountered: full-body armor made of magical alloy, standard-issue magic flame jets at the ankles, magical lightsabers at the waist, refined steel round shields on their backs, sensor magic eyes on their heads to detect light, and under their arms hung rare magical guns capable of firing magic missiles, just like the magical lightsabers.

Not to mention the value of the mechanical warriors themselves, just the equipment alone was worth hundreds of thousands of gold coins. Any magical lightsaber taken out would fetch a high price; selling just one would be enough for Adam Bennett to escape to anywhere he wanted.

“We’ve really struck it rich. I never expected to find such a huge haul. It’s a pity that I didn’t know I’d discover a ruin of this caliber, so I didn’t bring any tools. There’s simply no way to transport so many mechanical warriors!”

A mechanical warrior was about the size of a normal adult man, and with the armor, appeared even taller. As a seventeen-year-old, Adam Bennett only reached the chest of these mechanical warriors. With the wind and snow howling in the Bellusconi Mountains, it was difficult enough to travel empty-handed, let alone carry even a single mechanical warrior out.

Chapter Six: Magic Contract Card

Adam Bennett was about to try removing two weapons from the nearest mechanical warrior, but he lacked suitable tools. He didn’t want to use the magical lightsaber in his hand, as that would damage these valuable antiques. As he looked around, his gaze fell on a bronze chest covered in verdigris. However, this chest was clearly too heavy and not suitable as a carrying tool, but it successfully piqued Adam Bennett’s interest.

In a storeroom like this, the presence of such an ancient and mysterious bronze chest was enough to arouse anyone’s curiosity, especially since Adam Bennett had come here in search of treasure. Although his current haul already left him troubled by how to transport it, this did nothing to diminish the young man’s desire for even more.

However, Adam Bennett had developed a cautious habit during his time with the thieves’ guild. Although this bronze chest didn’t look like it concealed any deadly traps, Adam Bennett still took every precaution. He took a round shield from one of the mechanical warriors and held it in front of him before using his magical sword to pry open the bronze chest.

The round shields of the mechanical warriors were specially made, able to block magical lightsabers and magical gunfire on the battlefield. In terms of sheer sturdiness, they were even better than the magical alloy used to make the mechanical warriors themselves, though the smelting technique, like other magical technologies, had long been lost.

With the protection of this round shield, Adam Bennett was confident that even if there were any deadly hidden weapons inside the bronze chest, he could keep himself safe. Still, at the moment the chest opened, he leapt back with all his might, putting distance between himself and the bronze chest.
