Chapter 17

“This…” Paul Mason looked a bit troubled. He recognized these guys—they acted like bullies on Jiangmiao Street, and he’d seen them around, but they didn’t usually come to the factory to cause trouble. The last two times, he’d managed to talk them down, but this time it seemed they weren’t willing to give him any face. But to ask him to go and tell those two girls to dance with this guy’s buddies—he just couldn’t do it. If he really did that, he might as well quit being the head of security.

It’d be best if those two girls were sensible enough to take the blame themselves, but they both seemed scared stiff, standing there motionless, completely clueless about what was going on.

“David, that terrified kid is Peter Goodman, he’s a year below us, you probably don’t remember him. He’s James Goodman’s son, the deputy factory director in charge of infrastructure and logistics. Always likes to show off, and now he’s run into someone tough.” Philip Warren whispered in David Carter’s ear, “Paul Mason has to step in, or he’ll have a hard time in the future.”

The air was a bit tense. David Carter hadn’t planned to get involved—this was Paul Mason’s job—but it looked like Paul Mason might not be able to handle the other side, so he had no choice but to step in.

“Dance with your buddy? Who the hell do you think you are? What if we don’t? What are you gonna do?” Since he’d decided to step in, David Carter didn’t bother being polite. He pushed through the crowd and walked in.

The long-haired man immediately felt the pressure. There was only one person, but his presence was overwhelming, like someone who knew how to fight.

“Damn it! Who the hell are you, you got a death wish?” The guy next to the long-haired man, unable to contain his anger, lunged at him, and even the long-haired man couldn’t hold him back.

David Carter shifted his body slightly, not even moving the arms folded across his chest, and with a quick leg sweep, sent the guy sprawling. “Watch your mouth! Who said you could talk here?!”

What a beautiful move!

The long-haired man instantly realized that this tall, sturdy young man was not someone to mess with. Second Miller might not be a big deal, but he was a seasoned fighter, and yet he’d been kicked so far without even reacting, lying on the ground for ages before getting up. Clearly, he’d suffered a big loss.

Taking a deep breath, the long-haired man narrowed his eyes and instinctively slipped his hand into his pocket. “Hey, kid, where are you from? I don’t think I’ve seen you around this textile factory.”

“Why do you care where I’m from?” Now that he’d stepped in, David Carter didn’t care anymore. He crossed his arms and said coldly, “Don’t try to get chummy with me. I’m not with you guys. I’m not in the mood to mess around today, so get lost while you still can!”

The long-haired man was a bit angry. This guy had such a big mouth—could it be…

He glanced at the other’s pants, and the red stripe on the side immediately made him realize who he was dealing with. Police?

There was no one like this at the Jiangmiao police station. But he’d heard from Samuel Moore that last year, someone from their factory’s kids, a guy named Zhao, had been assigned to the county criminal police team, and he often came to Jiangmiao Town to fight—wasn’t he the older brother of that Third Carter? Could this be the guy?

But if he just slunk away now, how could he keep up his reputation as the boss in front of his men? The long-haired man snorted coldly, forced a smile, and stepped forward, reaching out his hand. “Kid, I advise you to mind your own business!”

David Carter could tell the other guy had probably guessed his identity, but was still unwilling to back down and wanted to test him. So he calmly reached out and shook the man’s hand. “I’m the one advising you to leave while you still can. Otherwise, you might not be able to leave even if you want to!”

As their hands clasped, the long-haired man suddenly squeezed hard, but found the other’s hand was like a pair of iron pincers, completely unmoving. With that grip, he felt like even an iron walnut would be crushed, but the other guy didn’t even flinch. He immediately tried to pull his hand back, but David Carter suddenly squeezed, making half his arm go numb—he almost cried out in pain!

David Carter didn’t want to make a big scene. He’d just arrived at the Jiangmiao police station, and while this kind of thing might look impressive, if word got back to the station, the leadership might not like it. They might even think he was just trying to show off, especially since he wasn’t on duty.

Teaching the guy a lesson was enough. This guy was pretty strong—an average person probably couldn’t handle his grip. David Carter let go without a change in expression and lowered his voice. “Get lost!”

The long-haired man’s face turned ashen. He glared fiercely around the room, then turned and left without a word. The guys with him didn’t know exactly what had happened, but seeing their boss leave with such an ugly expression, they didn’t dare say a word and slunk off after him.

Not bad. David Carter watched them leave. At least the guy didn’t try to save face with some tough talk before going, which made David Carter feel a bit of respect for the long-haired man.

Chapter 11: Class Belle

The atmosphere in the dance hall quickly livened up again. Hundreds of surprised and admiring eyes followed David Carter around, letting him truly experience what it felt like to be a hero. Especially being able to attract the attention of girls his own age—any guy would feel a bit elated.

“David, we really owe you this time!” The girl’s bright eyes lingered on David Carter’s handsome face with a look that was hard to describe. “When did you get back?”
