Chapter 3

David Harris was silent for a moment, then said, "If anesthesia is administered, there may never be another chance to wake up."

The First People's Hospital is the best hospital in K City, and naturally has the best doctors.

After getting through the initial panic, the surgery clearly became orderly.

The patient's blood loss was kept within an optimistic range.

Perhaps due to prolonged concentration, there was some disorientation. In the third hour of the surgery, Dr. Thompson accidentally cut his own glove. The dirty water from the fish eggs splashed all over his hand.

"Help—help!" Dr. Thompson's nerves snapped in an instant. "I'm not doing the surgery anymore! I quit! Let me go!"

He threw down the scalpel and rushed out the door.

David Harris frowned, but did not stop him.

In any case, in this state, Dr. Thompson wouldn't be able to leave the hospital; he would be taken for psychological counseling and contamination screening.

The surgery lasted four and a half hours. The last fish egg in the chest cavity was finally successfully removed.

the director, who was older, was drenched in cold sweat. The moment he put down the scalpel, he couldn't help but feel dizzy.

"The surgery was very successful..."

the director looked at the patient's only "family member."

After tensing his muscles for several hours, David Harris finally relaxed, and a faint smile appeared on his face.

Adam Carter blinked and looked at the back of the patient's hand.

Beneath the skin, it seemed as if something was flowing through the veins.

The patient must have been a soldier with extraordinary willpower; even without anesthesia, he only let out a few muffled grunts. Later, he didn't even make a sound. Perhaps the pain had numbed him.

Now, his fingers trembled slightly, as if trying to get the doctor's attention. Unfortunately, he was tied up tightly, so the movement was very subtle.

Adam Carter looked into his eyes. They were eyes filled with tears, full of reluctance and determination.

Was he... asking for help?

Almost instinctively, Adam Carter's scalpel cut open the skin tissue on the back of the patient's hand.

Tiny golden fish eggs spurted out.

David Harris's expression changed dramatically in an instant.

"Bang—"

An unexpected gunshot rang out, deafening.

The nurses screamed and huddled together.

Adam Carter had performed many surgeries, especially emergency rescues for critically ill patients. Of course, he couldn't guarantee that everyone would walk off the operating table alive.

He just never imagined that a patient would die like this on the operating table.

Blood splattered onto the protective suit. Not just blood, but also some internal organs. Too close to dodge.

the director's legs gave out, and he sat down on the floor.

David Harris put down the gun, his tone full of apology: "I'm sorry. I made a misjudgment; he had already entered the third stage. Contamination was inevitable. The only option was to remove the contaminant in advance. Tomorrow, specialized personnel will contact you to provide compensation."

Adam Carter still stared blankly at the corpse on the operating table, as if he hadn't processed what had happened.

Meanwhile, David Harris's teammates silently stepped forward to move the patient's body. It wouldn't be sent to the morgue; it had to be placed in a protective chamber and then cremated at high temperature.

"I'm very sorry for letting everyone witness such a scene."

David Harris gave one last bow and left the operating room.

Those who remained looked at each other in dismay.

the director didn't dare take off his protective suit, even though he was already drenched in sweat.

His mouth tasted bitter as he said, "I'll give everyone three days off. Go home... and get some rest."

Young Nurse's hands still couldn't stop trembling. She wiped the fog from her goggles. "the director, is contamination disease really a disease?"

the director gave a bitter smile. "I don't know. I've only heard one theory: the people at the research institute call it... evolution. And evolution inevitably goes hand in hand with extinction. Without extinction, new species wouldn't have an ecological niche to fill."

"Just be prepared for yourselves." He didn't want to say more.

Adam Carter went to the changing room and turned on the faucet in front of the mirror.

After surgery, one should wash their hands. As the water flowed, his hand remained clenched in a fist.

Adam Carter looked at himself in the mirror.

It was a calm, indifferent face. No joy, and naturally no panic or fear.

No one knew what he was thinking, and no one noticed what he did at the end of the surgery.

He turned off the faucet and put his hand in his pocket. He relaxed his grip.

In that instant, a mechanical voice rang clearly in Adam Carter's mind—

[Congratulations to the host for awakening the talent—Omniscience.]

[Congratulations to the host for obtaining the item: King Fish Larva (Unhatched, Grade E)]

002/Seven Streams

[Yes, you can call me System. Maybe in your mind, only a system can scientifically explain me.]

[I know what you're thinking; you haven't fallen ill. I am your talent, or perhaps your superpower?]

[After coming into contact with a source of contamination, those who are contaminated are called Contaminants; those who are not contaminated and awaken a talent are called Awakeners. This will probably be accepted by people in a few months. The truth can't be hidden forever... What kind of world do you think you live in? In fact, you've already met an Awakener, clever... David Harris. By the way, you are one too.]
