David Brooks glanced around again, a faint smile on his face as he said, “The feng shui here is indeed quite good—this is a rare and excellent residence. However, it’s a yin dwelling; it’s barely suitable for the living, but it’s perfect for the dead…”
Master Reed exclaimed in exasperation, “Damn it, I have no grudge against him—why does he want to harm me!”
Sophia Carter was rather surprised and asked, “Senior Brother Brooks, you know the art of geomancy?”
Seeing Junior Sister Carter’s astonished expression, Emily Thompson and William Clark also looked at him, and David Brooks finally regained a bit of confidence.
At Baiyun Temple, people lived a life of purity and few desires. Once, he had spent a hefty sum to buy an erotic picture book, planning to use it for comfort in the quiet of the night. He had even taken off his pants, but when he opened the book, he found it was all about geomancy and feng shui. He was so angry he almost tore the book apart…
Later, out of sheer boredom, he flipped through it to pass the time, and before he knew it, he had actually learned quite a lot.
He straightened his chest slightly and said, “This place is called the ‘Twin Mountains by the Water Acupoint.’ Junior Sister Carter, look—on both sides of this house are tall mountains, and there’s a water source in front. The yin energy blows in from between the two mountains and gathers over the water, making this a place where yin energy accumulates. It’s exactly the kind of place where yin spirits love to gather…”
Emily Thompson didn’t understand feng shui, but David Brooks sounded convincing, not like he was making things up.
The art of geomancy was considered a fringe skill in the cultivation world; few in the orthodox path mastered it. On the other hand, the demonic path sometimes used geomancy to raise ghosts and corpses, which orthodox cultivators despised.
Master Reed snapped out of it and hurriedly asked, “May I ask, Immortal Master, is there a way to break this ‘Twin Mountains by the Water’ formation?”
David Brooks waved his hand and said, “That’s simple. Just have someone fill in the lake and plant trees, and this gathering of yin energy will be broken. No more ghosts will gather here.”
Master Reed was overjoyed, bowed several times to David Brooks, and kept saying, “Thank you, Immortal Master, thank you…”
David Brooks’s vanity was greatly satisfied. He wanted to show off a bit more knowledge to attract Junior Sister Carter’s attention, but saw that Emily Thompson and the other two had already gone inside.
The days of nightmares had left the Ren family with quite a psychological shadow, so they didn’t come in, only dared to stand at the doorway and peer inside.
David Brooks waved at Master Reed and said, “You can leave now. Come back tomorrow morning.”
The Ren family, hearing this, felt as if they’d been granted amnesty and quickly ran off.
Yin spirits are the weakest kind of ghosts and are easily dispersed by yang energy. During the day, they mostly hide underground or in places where sunlight never reaches, only daring to appear in the latter half of the night when yin energy is at its peak.
Emily Thompson and the other three each found a room and quietly waited for midnight to arrive.
Time passed slowly, and night fell completely.
That night, at midnight.
Emily Thompson lay on the bed. The candle in the room had long since gone out, and the pale moonlight streamed in through the window, casting a layer of dark gray shadow on the floor.
At a certain moment, an invisible shadow drifted in from outside the door, passed through the door, and slowly floated to the bedside. Staring at the young man lying on the bed, she couldn’t help but say, “What a handsome man—I almost can’t bear to scare him…”
The next moment, the young man opened his eyes and looked at her, asking, “How handsome?”
Chapter 7: The Bystander
Emily Thompson’s room.
The yin spirit froze in place.
Emily Thompson looked at her with great interest. She was a female ghost. When Emily Thompson channeled his magic power to his eyes, he could see her; when he withdrew his power, there was nothing before him, only a vague sense that something was there.
Seeing a ghost for the first time didn’t seem all that scary.
Emily Thompson had a feeling that, with just a thought, he could make her dissipate completely.
This yin spirit in the room was also experiencing this for the first time. After a brief moment of shock, she let out a startled cry and turned to flee toward the door.
This time, Emily Thompson didn’t channel his power to his ears, so he could see her mouth move but couldn’t hear any sound.
He quickly walked to the door, opened it, and almost at the same time, the other three doors flew open. William Clark and the others appeared in Emily Thompson’s view.
The previously empty courtyard was now in chaos.
At some point, dozens of yin spirits had gathered here—men and women, old and young. Emily Thompson and his companions had clearly barged into a den of ghosts.
However, these low-level ghosts posed no threat to them. A ball of flame appeared in David Brooks’s palm, making all the ghostly figures in the courtyard tremble and cry out in terror.
From this flame, they sensed the power of destruction.
The ghosts’ reaction greatly pleased David Brooks. He snorted coldly and shouted sternly, “Brazen ghosts! How dare you occupy a yang dwelling! Get out now! If you dare come back, I’ll make your souls scatter!”
The ghosts cowered under David Brooks’s pressure. Only a little ghost, not knowing any better, protested, “This was our home to begin with! They were the ones who dug up our graves and threw our bones into the lake…”
“Uh…”
David Brooks looked a bit embarrassed, but only for a moment. He was being paid to solve their problem—he could earn fifty spirit coins from this job, so of course he wouldn’t stand up for the ghosts.
He raised his voice again and said, “Enough nonsense! Get out!”
No ghost dared say another word. They all floated toward the door. Including David Brooks, Emily Thompson and the other two didn’t make a move.
