Chapter 19

Sweat trickled down the temples, then slowly flowed from the face to the chin, gradually accumulating into a large drop. Eventually, the surface tension could no longer hold, and it dripped from the chin. Another spot of moisture instantly appeared on the chest of the military uniform. However, the uniform on the chest was already soaked through, so this drop of sweat only added a bit more dampness, leaving no other trace.

A pair of large feet in military boots appeared in front of William Carter. The instructor, burly and even more robust than the gorilla-like teacher at school, stared intently at the boy who didn’t look particularly strong, his eyes as round as copper bells.

In terms of build, William Carter was still a bit behind those who had practiced the first-level Strength Technique. A year was enough for other boys his age, who were also in their growth period, to develop more muscle. By comparison, William Carter, who had always maintained a normal physique, appeared especially frail among the group.

“Soldier, step out!” The instructor’s booming voice rang in William Carter’s ear.

“Yes, sir!” William Carter shouted back at the top of his lungs, then took a big step forward, standing straight at the front of the formation. Sometimes, William Carter really couldn’t understand why people in the army had to speak so loudly. Everyone’s hearing was excellent; even if they whispered, at such close range, they would definitely be heard.

“The infirmary straight ahead, double time—go!” A baffling order was given, and William Carter didn’t dare hesitate, lifting his legs and running off.

They had just finished formation command training and were standing at attention when this sudden order came. Not only did William Carter not understand, but even the others watching him run were confused.

“Reporting!” Standing at the infirmary door, William Carter still reported loudly.

“Come in!” A crisp voice sounded from inside, very gentle, yet very clear.

The infirmary looked quite empty. Although there were a few beds, since the new recruits had only just been doing formation drills, there were no injured or sick. This bit of physical exertion was nothing for high school graduates who had already established their foundation and practiced at least a year of first-level techniques, not to mention those who were older.

At the moment, only one medical officer was seated, looking at something on the display screen on her desk. Hearing William Carter come in, she turned her head.

Golden blonde hair, silky and smooth, draped over her shoulders. The green beret with a red cross on her head set off her face, making her look especially valiant and spirited. The female medical officer looked very young, but there was a hint of maturity about her. Her uniform fit perfectly, accentuating her curvy figure. Her lower body couldn’t be seen, but even so, William Carter was almost dazzled.

Seeing William Carter’s figure, the medical officer inside also looked puzzled. William Carter appeared perfectly healthy, with no injuries or illness—why was he here? However, the look in William Carter’s eyes made the female medic quite satisfied. She gave William Carter a slight smile, and it was as if a beautiful rose bloomed before his eyes.

“Soldier, why are you here?” The female medic’s voice seemed even softer, with a hint of allure that made William Carter unconsciously drawn to her. Her red lips moved like the sweetest strawberries in the world.

William Carter didn’t hear what the female medic was saying at all, just stood there dumbfounded. Seeing his reaction, the medic was momentarily stunned, then burst out laughing. Her laughter was even more dazzling. Having always stayed at school, William Carter had never had the chance to see such a stunning beauty, especially one standing alive right in front of him. He couldn’t help but not want to move at all.

“Christine, don’t tease the rookie!” The instructor’s gruff voice came from outside the door. Hearing this, William Carter felt as if he’d suddenly heard an alarm, and hurriedly straightened up, maintaining a standard military posture.

The instructor stormed in, looked at William Carter, and couldn’t help but kick him, cursing, “You’re such a disgrace to me!”

William Carter didn’t dare dodge, taking the kick head-on and being sent flying, almost falling to the ground. But the instructor’s authority kept William Carter silent, and he quickly stood at attention. Even though it was just formation training, everyone had already experienced how tough the instructor was. The most troublesome guys, who claimed to have been in society for at least a dozen years, were put in their place by the instructor on the very first day. After that, no one dared to challenge him lightly.

“What are you doing?” The female medic was displeased at the instructor for laying hands on someone in front of her. “Arnold, the pot calling the kettle black. If I recall, your first time here wasn’t exactly…” Before she could finish, she was interrupted by Instructor Arnold’s booming voice: “Christine, take a look at this kid. He’s in terrible shape—just three hours of standing at attention, and he’s already sweating so much!”

Clearly, there was a story between Instructor Arnold and this beautiful female medic when they first met, but William Carter wasn’t foolish enough to pry. Listening to their conversation, he stood ramrod straight, not daring to move a muscle. He knew all too well how formidable Instructor Arnold was.
