Chapter 2

"How about we go to your workplace area? I don't know if you've been there before. My coworker said there's a bar over there, and the owner looks super damn—" Samuel Clark said, "Hey, why do I keep hearing water on your end? Are you washing dishes?"

Evan Carter: "Washing up."

Samuel Clark was shocked: "You just woke up?"

Evan Carter replied lazily with a hum.

"It's already two o'clock, even lunch break is over." Samuel Clark found it odd, "What were you doing last night?"

"Watched a horror movie."

"What's it called?"

"'Awakening to See Ghosts.'"

Samuel Clark had clearly seen this movie and choked: "That counts as a horror movie?"

"I went to sleep right after." Evan Carter ignored her comment, grabbed a towel nearby, and wiped the water droplets off her face. "But then I suddenly woke up in the middle of the night, and just like in the movie, I actually saw a ghost."

"......"

"I spent the whole night fighting with the ghost."

Samuel Clark was a bit speechless: "Why are you suddenly bringing up such an R-rated topic with me?"

Evan Carter raised an eyebrow: "How is it R-rated?"

"What kind of fight lasts all night?"

"......"

"Alright, stop messing with ghosts. Let big sis take you to mess with men." Samuel Clark grinned, "Handsome, lively, hot men."

"Then I'd rather mess with ghosts." Picking up her phone, Evan Carter walked out of the bathroom. "At least it's free, no charge."

Samuel Clark: "Who said you have to pay? We can mess with men for free too."

Evan Carter: "Hm?"

"We can mess with them with our eyes."

"......"

-

After hanging up, Evan Carter messaged the landlord on WeChat again about what happened last night. Then, hesitantly, she added that she might not renew the lease after the contract expires.

Two months ago, she moved from Yihe to Nanwu City.

Samuel Clark helped her find the place, and there weren't any major issues.

The only inconvenience was that it was a shared apartment. The landlord had converted an 80-square-meter apartment into three separate rooms, each with its own bathroom. So there was no kitchen or balcony.

But the rent was cheap.

Evan Carter didn't have high requirements for her living space. Besides, the location was convenient and the area lively. She had even considered renting long-term.

Until one day, she happened to run into the man next door when she was going out.

Gradually, things turned into what they are now.

Unknowingly, the sun had set, and the small room was shrouded in darkness. Lights in thousands of homes flickered on one after another, illuminating the city in a different way, and the night market was gradually coming alive.

Seeing it was about time, Evan Carter changed her clothes and put on some light makeup.

Samuel Clark kept bombarding her on WeChat.

Grabbing the small bag from the coat rack, Evan Carter replied with a voice message, "Heading out now." She walked out, glanced across the hall, unconsciously quickened her pace, and went down the stairs.

They agreed to meet at the subway station.

The place they were heading to was the bar Samuel Clark mentioned earlier, located across from Shang'an Plaza. After passing through an archway, you could see a string of neon lights, one after another, decorating the signs of every shop.

A place that only came alive at night.

It was Nanwu City's famous bar street, known as "Fallen Street."

Since they'd never been, it took them a while to find the bar, finally spotting it in a small corner.

The name was pretty interesting—"Overtime."

The sign was especially simple. Pure black background, square, neat font, glowing pure white. Among all the colorful, flamboyant neon lights, it was as low-key as a little hair salon tucked away here.

"This is a pretty good idea," Evan Carter stared at it for a moment and commented, "Opening a hair salon on bar street—guys who want to pick up girls can come here for a makeover first."

Samuel Clark twitched her lips and dragged her inside. "Stop talking nonsense."

Unexpectedly, it wasn't as quiet inside as Evan Carter had imagined.

They were early, not yet peak hours, but more than half the seats were already taken.

On stage, a woman with a guitar was singing with her eyes down, the atmosphere mellow and soothing. At the bar, the bartender with dyed blond hair was tossing shakers like a juggler, relaxed and skillful.

They found a seat, and Evan Carter ordered the cheapest drink.

Samuel Clark looked around, a bit disappointed: "Is the owner not here? I don't see anyone handsome."

Evan Carter propped her chin and said absentmindedly, "Maybe it's that bartender guy."

"Bullshit!" Samuel Clark clearly couldn't accept that. "My coworker, who basically lives on Fallen Street, said the owner of this bar is basically the face of the whole street."

"Maybe it's just self-proclaimed."

"?"

Noticing Samuel Clark's unfriendly look, Evan Carter sat up straighter and emphasized, "I mean, maybe."

Samuel Clark snorted.

The two of them chatted idly for a while.
