Chapter 8

“I wasn’t even touched by them, but what about you, are you hurt?” Henry Brooks asked with concern. Although David Carter had the upper hand, force always acts mutually—just because you beat someone up badly doesn’t mean you didn’t get hurt yourself.

“No worries, I’m tough.” David Carter replied with a relaxed look. Not to mention two people, even if two more came, he wouldn’t take them seriously. Most of his fighting skills were taught by the old man, but after fighting with wild animals in the mountains, he’d picked up a lot of unorthodox moves. As the saying goes, a flurry of wild punches can defeat a master. Sometimes, even when sparring with the old man, the latter couldn’t handle his attacks. Besides, he still had many ruthless moves he hadn’t used. If he really went all out, the old man probably wouldn’t be able to withstand even a few moves.

“That’s good.” Henry Brooks calmed down at this point and took out his phone to make a call. It wasn’t clear who he was calling, but he simply explained the situation here.

Chapter 5: Human Relations

The call Henry Brooks made was to his granddaughter, the community police officer Grace Brooks from Hongxing Police Station, responsible for the Qinghe Road area. Although she was just a community officer, Grace Brooks was quite famous at the station, and even at the sub-bureau. This was not only because she was very beautiful, but also because of her relationship with Henry Brooks.

“Although we’re in the right here, we still need to let the police handle it,” Henry Brooks said with a smile when he saw David Carter looking at him.

“I’ll follow your instructions.” Deep down, David Carter actually didn’t want the police involved. Since he’d already knocked the other guys down, it would be best to just leave quickly—why bother alerting the police?

A few minutes later, a police car sped over and, as it approached them, showed no sign of slowing down. Just as David Carter was about to step aside, the police car braked sharply, skidding sideways to a stop right in front of him and Henry Brooks, less than ten centimeters from David Carter.

David Carter was about to speak when a female officer stepped out of the car, catching his eye. Dressed in a well-fitted police uniform and cap, her figure was curvy and striking, exuding both heroic spirit and sharp competence. But as she came closer, he noticed her neat short hair, broad forehead, gracefully arched brows, clear and bright eyes beneath perfectly shaped eyebrows, long lashes, a delicate nose, and a small, rosy mouth beneath a refined nose bridge.

Seeing David Carter staring in a daze, she shot him a glare, her annoyance clear. But when she took in David Carter’s outfit, surprise flashed in her eyes. David Carter snapped out of it, embarrassedly taking a step back, realizing he’d been a bit rude.

“Grandpa, are you alright?” Grace Brooks didn’t even look at the two men on the ground. She walked straight to Henry Brooks, holding his arms and asking with concern.

Seeing her from behind, David Carter suddenly remembered that she was the girl who had picked up Henry Brooks at the train station earlier that evening. Now, in her police uniform, she had a completely different aura—like a peony and a lily, each with their own unique charm.

“What could happen to me? It’s those two guys on the ground who probably need to be sent to the hospital.” Henry Brooks said with a chuckle. “Oh, by the way, this is David Carter, a new friend I just met. He arrived in Tanzhou today.”

“Grandpa, let me handle this. You should go home first.” Only then did Grace Brooks notice the two men lying on the ground. She then looked at David Carter and said coldly, “David Carter, you need to come with me to the police station.”

Hearing that David Carter had to go to the police station, Henry Brooks felt uneasy. Although he and David Carter weren’t related, the fact that he’d met David Carter twice in one day suggested they were fated to know each other. Besides, David Carter had indeed used a bit too much force earlier. If the matter was pursued, it could become troublesome, so he insisted on going to the police station as well. At the very least, as a witness, he had an obligation to cooperate with the police.

Grace Brooks couldn’t refuse Henry Brooks, so she had to take both him and David Carter back to the station. As for the two on the ground, they were already unconscious and had to be sent directly to the hospital. Only after they woke up could statements be taken. Once at the station, Henry Brooks was invited to the office, while David Carter was taken to the interrogation room, where Grace Brooks and another officer questioned him.

“Grandpa, did David Carter really take down both of those men by himself?” After finishing David Carter’s statement, Grace Brooks was a bit skeptical. Looking at the slim and slight David Carter, how could he have such strength? The hospital had just called: one of the men had lost three teeth, the other five, and one had a fractured left cheekbone. To knock out someone’s teeth like that, they must have suffered a tremendous blow. Even swinging a hammer might not have such an effect.

“What, you think my old eyes are failing me?” Henry Brooks said, displeased. He had come to the station specifically to make sure David Carter wouldn’t be taken advantage of. Now that they were here, he was determined to stand firmly on David Carter’s side. Although he hadn’t seen everything clearly, his experience told him it was definitely David Carter who did it.

“If that’s really the case, then it’s a bit troublesome. The two who tried to rob you tonight are now seriously injured, and David Carter will have to pay their medical bills. Also, if the other side presses charges, David Carter could be detained, or even sentenced.” Grace Brooks wrinkled her cute nose. She had just asked David Carter for his basic information, and no longer minded his earlier rudeness.
